I assume, septimusphoenix, you meant "not the patient"

which I completely agree with

I wrote my interpretation in another comment, but that kind of got overshadowed by a bunch condescending people insulting this song,

but essentially, I'd say that "the" patient is brought back from the rage of the previous song by the sight of another character, namely this cancer patient, whom I envision as a small, innocent child.

This character's story then enfolds before us, and its done in such a way that almost anyone can relate to it.

this song seems to be the start of a series of encounters with other people, like the solidiers in mama, perhaps a troubled soul who was consumed by nightmares and commited suicide (or something like that, I'm still debating the storyline in 'sleep') and a victim of teen gang violence.

when did gerard or anyone else in the band say the patient died from cancer?

Not trying to be asinine in any way MCVicky, but I'm pretty certain that the Patient dies from a heart complication, not cancer (see 'dead': "During this operation/found a complication in your heart")

and also, the song Cancer doesn't appear till after the Patient has died, and if it were the Patient singing it, then its perspective would offset the current flow of the story.

To your credit, the patient could have been in the hospital in the first place because of cancer, but I'm fairly certain he was there because of some mistakes he had made in the areas of drugs and alcohol, and that the actual song is merely being sung by someone he meets (I envision an innocent child who died from cancer)

yeah... back to teenagers...

fantastic song, very meaningful and damn true.

as for how it ties into the story, I think the patient meets a victim of gang violence, as he has the other characters (the cancer patient, the soldiers)

I definitely like the above interpretations far better than what I originally thought.

That being, this was a cross between the patient being very much delirious due to whatever medicine he was on / a distorted flashback to something that happened to him.

granted, the lyrics play out as though the narrator is an adult who is most regretful at the fact that they cannot be with their lover.

however, I still believe that an innocent child captures the horror that is death from cancer best, as they have yet to experience life and their death is the greatest blow to society.

this is a profoundly amazing song, with emotional depth that millions can relate to.

as for the manner in which it ties into the story, I see it a little something like this.

Cancer, is proceeded by House of Wolves, which can be very angry, as if the patient is raging against himself in the depths of purgatory.

At one given moment, he turns and see's another character, possibly the gas-masked woman from the WtTBP video, although I see him/her as an innocent child, with an ambient aura about him/her, in a hospital gown and lacking hair.

At this moment, the Patient realizes how foolish/selfish he was during House of Wolves, and is overcome with regret and sadness at the sight of the cancer patient, whose story then begins to unfold here.

My Chemical Romance – Famous Last Words Lyrics 19 years ago
This is the finale, the big bang.
In disenchanted, I feel as though the patient had accepted his past and had put it behind him. It is stating the moral in a very subtle, applicative, hands-on manner.

Now Famous Last Words essentially takes what I think to be the moral of the record (live life to the fullest, as you never know what day will be your last) and screams it loud for anyone who didn't catch it before.

"I'm not afraid to keep on living/I'm not afraid to walk this world alone"

Life is not meant to be feared, true, it has its moments of sorrow, but what the band is trying to say is that you should live it the best you can, no matter what happens.

now, no matter what the band says, not every song will fit in perfectly with the concept of the album, that is, the patient dying at a young age and his journey through death. However, dispite my initial skepticism upon hearing that they were putting this song on the record, I feel as though this really fits quite well.

You know those songs in musicals, where the main character comes forward near the end of the play, and sings a song where he/she looks his/her life right in the face and how they've accepted the past and how it has set the stage to where they are? Maybe not, I have one particular song from one particular play in mind, but I can't put my finger on it. (This was prompted by the line "It was the roar of the crowd that gave me Heartache to sing")

This is one of those.
The vibe I get from this song is that the patient is going over a large portion of his life, namely, high school, and considering all the stupid things he did.
However, he does this in a very calm manner, as though he is simply accepting his demons and putting them to rest.

If this is one of those songs, then it is only fitting that Famous Last Words is the empowering finale, where the moral is realized and stated.

And that's exactly what it is.

The Killers – Sam's Town Lyrics 19 years ago
I'm pretty sure vin got the meaning right.

Just to elaborate on the latter bits of that closing segment
"holds my hand up, lets my hair down"
and
"rolls the world right off my shoulders"

both lines suggest feelings of relief,
as if Brandon is wholly glad to be rid of the psuedo-brit-pop persona that the Killers previously held, and that he is now closer to home... Sam's town.

for further justification, just read any of the recent interviews with Brandon and the rest of the band.

My Chemical Romance – Welcome To The Black Parade Lyrics 19 years ago
ok, just to get this straight

"heres the poignant faces of you piers [?]
ooh oh ohhhh
take a look at me cos i could not care at all
do or die
you'll never make me
cos the world, will never take my heart"

the first line in that bit should be

"on and on we carry through the fears
oh oh oh
the dissapointed faces of your peers
oh oh oh
take a look at me cause I could not care at all"

this makes a lot more sense (him not giving a damn about what those above him think about his choices) than what's up there

and that goes double for the guy who thought gerard was saying "guitar pointed faces of your peers"
