KD Lang, Canada's most prominent subversive lesbian singer from Calgary, well-known for being tomboyish and, while she definetly has style, hardly a beacon of contemporary fashion, was declared Miss Chatelaine in 1988. (Chatelaine being a Canadian women's magazine.) The song's literal: Why on Earth did she win Miss Chatelaine? Only her hairdresser knows for sure. |

For a song about love as portrayed against the Holocaust, it's a very bright and cheerful one. |

It's all about the descent into dementia that a relationship with a control freak can induce. The lyrics reflect this, but so does the music: it starts off simple and relatively bright, but as it breaks down, it starts to get angular, angry, and broken. Delicious. |

Aside from being a kick-ass song in general (Bonus coolness: listen really, really carefully and you can hear Jill's 11-year-old nephews shouting "When my sh*t comes in" in the outro choruses), the meaning's quite clear and obvious: "Yeah, life sucks, but it'll get better eventually. Promise." |
