My 2 cents. 1. Song is definitely about Montgomery Clift. 2. Monty was a handsome, popular guy. 3. He was bi-sexual, and closeted. 4. He turned down some major roles. Rio Bravo, Sunset Boulevard, East of Eden, Moby Dick, Fahrenheit 451, Trouble With Harry among others ("Heroes don't come easy." 5. He was in a car crash which robbed him of his looks and left him impotent, rumour has it. Basically, he turned down oscar winning roles then lost his good looks. Raw deal indeed! 6. "I saw the ocean meet the man, I saw you buried in the sand," is likely a reference to the famous beach scene in Here To Eternity. 7. By the end, Clift had become an alcoholic and a recluse ("You don't want this sympathy/ Monty's laying low") I would love to know what more of these lines refer to - such as "try to bust you in a sting" - Google isn't helping! Peter Buck: "I wrote it on bouzouki in New Orleans. Someone was having a party next door. I was up late, couldn’t sleep. We put it down in one take and Michael said, ‘Oh, that’s my favourite song.’ “The Montgomery Clift thing came because there was someone who was a photographer on the set of The Misfits who came by the studio. He had photos from it and he was talking about it. How much of the song is real, how much of it is about Montgomery Clift and how much is about home, I couldn’t tell you. But we saw those pictures and, while we were recording it, Michael was talking about it.” |

There's a radio tower, it's egging you on - tired and sleepy, you can see a tower in the distance. Just make it to the tower, then sleep. The Dark Tower perhaps? Back to the place where you never belonged Where the people thrive on their own contempt Whatever meaning is long gone spent If you had to guess or make bet Would you place yourself inside of it? - Do you really want to reach where youre heading, or would you rather veer into on coming traffic? The mountains yawn. the clouds let out a sigh - Life goes on around you. Old life. |

There's a lyric missing here - "Started thinking about my old man/ IT SEEMS THAT ALL MEN/ WELL THEY GET INTO A CAR and go/ anywhere" Which is so true. I remember my dad just driving off when he was a in a mood. And I got bored once and just drove around. It's a man thing! Universal themes - you can't go wrong. |

It's interesting to read comments AFTER you have discovered what the tune refers to based on comment from the author himself. Michael recently wrote an essay on what this song means, and it really is a lot simpler than you guys think! Deena upt it best. As for what the title means?... "The title of the song came from flying into L.A. and/or seeing it from on high[mulholland] and it looking like a blanket of stars or those bizarre sea creatures that light up when you stir up the water. How I got ‘electrolite’ out of that I don’t know, I still cant think of the word I was going for, but it is actually called ‘phosphorescence’ or ‘bioluminescence’. I thought it was ‘electro’- something, so I just used light/lyte, giving it the ‘lite’ of modern fad diet language." |

| While it's impossible to decipher the specifics (although Johnny Reb is slang for a confederate soldier), I can add that Mike Mills once spoke of this tune and, in particular, the title of the song. He said that the H was supposed to read as "Huh", as if the speaker was cut short. Mills said this was just a bit too pretentious for his liking i think. | |
