I agree with most of the other comments. There is something of a goddess worship thing going on here, and there is definitely a bereavement angle too, e.g. “something is lost”.
For me, the line “She will always carry on” is a deep pool of comfort. |

This sounds like the pre-NASA Orion program, wherein the US govt sought to build large nuclear spacecraft to explore but more importantly to be able to bomb Russia from orbit. |

| Gerry Rafferty – Baker Street Lyrics
|
Firstly - it's "Way down the street there's a light in his place" (not "lad").
Now, the meaning. Gerry once stated in an interview that the song is about leaving his wife and kids in Glasgow catching the overnight train down to London for legal proceedings following the split of his band, Stealer's Wheel. He would crash on the sofa at a friend's flat (the guy who asks him where he's been) just off Baker Street during the week and then would start the long journey back north ("it's a new morning and you're going home"). He was utterly miserable with this mode of existence, but he was able to channel it into this song. Lucky for us. |

They were on BBC Breakfast this morning (17/01/2011) saying that Ocean Drive was in Newcastle. Just looked on Google Maps and the nearest is Ocean Road in South Shields. It doesn't look that special - fine enough as a shopping street - just not anywhere you'd actually *aspire* to live ... anyone have the full story on where it is? |

To me this goes to an almost primal fear of having no home nor any way to get there - and no one to help. |

I've always connected this with the AntiChrist, but that's probably because it came out about the same time as Omen III ... The video seems to go that way too. Ultravox are epic. |

This song certainly chimed with my teenage feelings of paranoia about people in power. Nowadays of course, they chime with my middle-aged paranoia about people in power. |

To me this is a song about hope against adversity. Better times to come, perhaps in the next life.
I hum it to myself when things are difficult. |

This song swoops between despair and defiance beautifully. I truly believe the "while" stanza to be one of the most eloquent bits of verse in the English language. Brings a tear to my eye occasionally! |

You know, I always thought that this song might be about learning to fly a microlight or a light aircraft ... believe me, there's drama when you do that. But I heard recently that it was about manic depression and bipolar disorder, so what do I know? |
