Josh Ritter – Folk Bloodbath Lyrics 15 years ago
Just been to see Mr Ritter at the Barbican. He said that this song is a comedy. He explained that American folk music originated in Great Britain, and traditional folk music from Britain told a story that generally went along the lines of "here's a guy, and then he dies". Josh said that you never got a reason as to why he died, but somewhere as this music came across the pond American folk singers started to tag a moral onto the end.

Josh said that he always found it funny that American folk singers felt the need to attach some sort of moral or meaning to the song, so decided to go back to basics and just make a song in which people die and that's that, hence the title. So the song, it seems, is a nod to American folk's roots and a lighthearted dig at old folk and blues songs.

Brakes – Pick Up the Phone Lyrics 16 years ago
OMG you're right! I just thought it was nonwords that he was making while waiting for someone to pick up the phone but this makes MUCH more sense!

Consider it changed.

Band of Horses – Monsters Lyrics 17 years ago
The beautiful closing lyrics sum this song up perfectly. It's saying that no matter how little hope you have, or how messed up and lost you feel, it will always get better. This song is perfect for reminding us of this.

The opening verse is about being overwhelmed by problems, but finding a way to escape them for a while. It's kinda meditative. It's also about finding hope from your past efforts and successes, as it's easy to forget all the positive things you've done when everything looks bleak. It's like they're buried.

The next verse is about being surrounded by people who want to kick you while you're down, the 'monsters.' However, it's still hopeful, in that the song isn't about hating these monsters, but rather 'transforming' them. It's like having a positive outlook is infectious, and your attitude will stop them.

LCD Soundsystem – All My Friends Lyrics 17 years ago
I agree with some of the points already made so far, but I think there's a little more to it than has been mentioned so far.

This song, at the surface level, is about a group for friends who are a little older than they used to be, getting together for a big party at one of their houses. They're determined to make it an all-nighter, just like they always used to do. And that's how it starts.

However, as the party goes on it's just not the same as it used to be. The drugs run out, the party starts to lose momentum. The party-goers are trying their best to pretend that it's not happening, because it would be like admitting defeat, but the party just never really gets off the ground like it used to. Sometimes it happens at parties. It's a weird phenomenon.

Interspersed with this story of a bad party is the idea of getting older and reaching the end of a stage in your life. The song talks about the idea that when you're young you spend years trying to reach adulthood, then you spend years trying to fit into it, and in that process you lose some of your wild youth and spend years trying to recapture it. It's like the start of a mid-life crisis.

The party is a point where the narrator (Murphy) is realising that no matter how hard he tries, life has moved on and carried him with it. You grow up, have kids, holiday in France and all of a sudden you're like "hey, where did my youth go? Where are my friends tonight?" He's realising with a hint of sadness that this could be the last time they're all together like they used to be. However, he's looking back and thinking that it was all worth it for the memories and the great times they all had.

It's a beautiful and sad song. It sucks to grow up and it's easy to feel like something has been lost as you do, but everyone has to do it, no matter how hard you try to deny or ignore it. The failed party is an allegory of this. And like the narrator in the party, you just no when it's time to move on to the next stage of your life. In the words of Ron Burgundy "We've been coming to the same party for 12 years now, and in no way is that depressing."

Does anyone know if this song and episode was made as a reaction to excessive censorship from the FCC?

The Ting Tings – That's Not My Name Lyrics 17 years ago
The Guardian says that this song is a "tale of music industry indifference to White's previous outfit, pop trio Dear Eskiimo."

So basically the song has exactly the same meaning as Mika's "Grace Kelly."

The TIng Tings are so shit you just want to yell at the radio.

Brakes – Cheney Lyrics 18 years ago
I dunno, I'm not sure I agree with what Sheepmaster3000 says. In a climate of 'artistic' protests songs, where fucking Black Eyed Peas can kick up a fuss about political issues, it's quite refreshing (and funny) for a song that is so to the point. Very punk.

Ben Folds Five – Missing The War Lyrics 19 years ago
Amateurboy is spot on, but to clarify some of it, the point is not just that he is in a relationship that he wants out of, but he is also working a job that exhausts him ("pissed and beaten") to support his marriage/relationship/family, which he is unhappy with. More importantly, his job craps on him and he takes it on the chin ("It's really no big deal").

He's a bit of a coward, or he cares too much, depending on the way you look at it. He doesn't want to upset anyone, so he plods along in his own way, but in the process he makes himself unhappy. He wants to change, but won't.

Ryan Adams – Fuck the Universe Lyrics 19 years ago
This has to be my favourite Ryan Adams song. I think it's about a woman who's just too much for him to bear. He stays with her, even though he's tired of her ("I'm a faker") but he's totally had enough ("Fuck you and fuck the universe"). I just love the fact that he screams for two minutes solidly. A proper angry tune.

Brakes – Heard About Your Band Lyrics 19 years ago
I don't think it's hyper-bollocks, but hyperbolics. Anyway, best tune on the album in my eyes. I think it's about yuppies who don't know anything about music and only worries about money, but likes to pretend he knows everyone in the biz.

This song blatantly refers to one Dick Cheney, vice president of the US. I think the meaning is self-explanatory.

The Boy Least Likely To – Warm Panda Cola Lyrics 19 years ago
Mmm...Panda cola. They had a whole range of drinks called Panda pops. They all tasted like rubbish and were filled with more E-numbers than a bottle of food colouring, and came in tiny bottles that weren't really enough to quench your thirst. I remember I once had a green cola.

Anyhoo, as for the song, as with many Boy Least Likely to songs, it is an hommage to childhood (by mentioning the Panda cola). No idea about the mountain part though.
