Vangelis – I'll Find My Way Home Lyrics 19 years ago
1) Nope, link doesn't work...

2) Are you implying it's a Christian song? I've always interpreted it exactly the opposite way -- an atheist (like myself) explaining to a Christian why his/her life isn't empty. I have even referred a close (christian) friend of mine to this song, because she could not understand how I can possibly be happy.

I might be "lost in my sin", i.e. not believing in God. But that doesn't mean I miss anything in my life. I find happiness in my life, by looking at the world how it is, not how I want it to be ("my sun shall rise in the east / so shall my heart be at peace").

Also, I love the "Your friend is close by your side / and speaks in far ancient tongue" -- "your friend" being Jesus, obviously. But "all seasons begin with you" -- to make things happen, you only have to turn to yourself. You are the one that can make a difference in your life, not a man who died 2000 years ago.

I truly think this is one of the most inspirational songs I've ever heard. I may not have the comfort many people find in God, but I don't need it. I'm not alone, and I'll find my way home.

Toto – Home Of The Brave Lyrics 19 years ago
Hmm... personally, yeah I think the lyrics and the meaning are a bit overdone, too correct and political... but listen to the music!!! Great :D

Eros Ramazzotti – A Mezza Via Lyrics 19 years ago
WOW, brilliant song. One of my favourite Eros songs ever. Pure rock -- and listen to the lyrics, sparse, short lines, full of meaning. Power in symplicity. "Be my companion, walk down the road of life with me, and help me find the ways to be me, and to express who I am." Love it.

Eros Ramazzotti – Cose Della Vita Lyrics 19 years ago
In fact, he sings about a lost love... and moving on afterwards. "Cose della vita" could be translated as "that's life".

Eros Ramazzotti – Adesso Tu Lyrics 19 years ago
Obviously one of Eros' early songs -- about his childhood in the poorer parts of Rome, and the young people dreaming of their escape. Standing up for the "new" generation is THE theme of the album "nuovi eroi" -- and of much of his early repertoire, at that. Not many people seem to realize this guy sings about other things than love, especially those who don't understand Italian. Beautiful song, one of his best ever.

Spandau Ballet – Through The Barricades Lyrics 19 years ago
This is probably the only Spandau Ballet song that I like... I can't completely figure it out, but it's definitely about two lovers, separated in the beginning by social class, race, religion, something like that... but with the support of their parents, if not of society, they end up together. Maybe about a Catholic and Protestant couple in Northern Ireland, talking about "this troubled land" -- although when I first heard it, I thought of Tolkien's tale of Beren and Luthien :)

Jackson Browne – The Pretender Lyrics 19 years ago
I think this song is about a man who used to be an idealist, who didn't want to live the way others do -- but who married and soon found himself living the exact same life he never wanted for himself. Each day the same, getting up, working, going to bed. Trying to resist, in the end he gives up and becomes one of the crowd, doing only what people expect of him. And now he watches the young idealists, who don't yet know their dreams will end same as his have. And he knows they can only pretend their lives will be different -- in the end they will get caught by society, and become just one among millons of others. A rather depressing view of life, but for most people all too true I think...

Jackson Browne – The Barricades of Heaven Lyrics 19 years ago
How can this song not have any comments yet?? I love this song -- remembering childhood, the time when everything was possible, the young standing on the borderline of dreams and knowing some of them might someday come true. The time when things seemed easy, not knowing the obstacles you have to face later in life ("pages we were years from learning").
And even realizing afterwards things aren't as easy as they seem when you are young ("faded pages open in the sun"), fond memories of those days always remain. Beautiful, nostalgic song.

Poison – Something To Believe In Lyrics 19 years ago
Sorry for all ye Jesus friends, but I don't think you understand it at all... this song is about a man whose faith in God is challenged by a number of things, things that make him look up to heaven and challenge whoever is there ("If there's a lord above...oh Lord arise"). And then finally realising that there is nobody up there, that all the beautiful words the church uses are empty and devoid of real meaning ("He tells me to believe in Jesus, and steals the money from my hand"). Jesus saves... but as the years pass by, and the neon letters break down, the homeless are still homeless. Hollow words, nothing changed.

And no, realising your faith is in vain is not easy ("Sometimes I wish to God I didn't know now the things I didn't know then")... hence the cry, the desperate cry of a man robbed of his foundations in life, for "something to believe in". Brilliant song, I love it.

Kansas – Carry on Wayward Son Lyrics 19 years ago
The lyrics remind me of a story I read, about a brilliant young physicist who claimed that he could transport himself into the future, where he was an interstellar pilot visiting many different worlds. Clearly delusional, he went into therapy -- only to find that the more his therapist heard about his "trips to the future", the more the man started believing in his stories and sharing his fantasies. And encouraging him to carry on the way he was going, up to the point where the young scientist, worried about his therapist's mental health (!), confessed he had made everything up from the start...

The song is not about this case, I guess, but it does remind me of this and similar stories about people being encouraged in their delusional beliefs by loved ones and even by therapists who should know better (e.g. about ghosts, UFOs, alien abductions, visitations from saints... and so on)
