I don't blame you, there's some nasty stuff in there. Unfortunately your bible says that attempting to delete or omit ANY part of the bible means you can't be saved. Kind of bad news for all you "nice" christians who ignore all the savagery of the old testament.

@[markf:36363] So.... you've never actually read Jeremiah, huh.

The Pentateuch and the Torah are the holy books in Judaism, and they constitute the first five books of the Christian bible (Genesis through Deuteronomy). They're also some of the most horrible stuff ever written by Human beings -- rape, slavery, murder, infanticide, genocide, and with God condoning it at every step. In most cases, God is actually COMMANDING it.

All Christians (and Jews and Muslims, since they believe in these horror stories too) should read through Numbers, Deuteronomy, and the book of Joshua. If more of them actually READ those parts of the bible instead of ignoring them, there would be a lot more atheists in the world.

Atheists DO use biblical allusions. Most American atheists were raised Christian, and I'll bet Graffin was too. In fact, atheists often know MORE about the bible than their christian peers, because they can look at it without bias, and don't skip over the nasty bits.

For example:
* In the Pentateuch, God condones slavery, and gives the Israelites extensive laws about how to treat slaves.
* In the Torah, God tells the Israelites to commit genocide... repeatedly.
* In Jeremiah, God says that women who sin deserve to be raped.

Most Christians don't even know that, because they've never actually read their bible. A lot of atheists got that way because they actually cracked the bible open one day and found out just what kind of sick, depraved stuff is inside.

Bad Religion – Don't Pray on Me Lyrics 15 years ago
Atheism is definitely part of what this song is about, but Bad Religion frequently use religion as an analogy for anything that tries to stop people from thinking for themselves -- like mass media and the government.

I think a lot of people are praying that god wont prey on them. God's "works" these days seems to consist of murdering doctors, flying planes into buildings, bombing restaurants and crowded transit systems, invading other countries and slaughtering the people there, etc. Just ask the people of Manhattan or Fallujah sometime about how God has "blessed" them with true believers carrying fire in one hand and death in the other.

Macy Gray – The Letter Lyrics 15 years ago
This is such a sweet little song. Quite possibly the most upbeat song about suicide that I've ever heard.

Macy Gray just puts this whole song together so well. The way she sets up the contrast between the life that the subject always thought she should have, and the life that she has to live. The compassion for how her family and friends will feel about what's she's going to do. It's just so perfect.

Marilyn Manson – Down In The Park Lyrics 16 years ago
I always felt that this song was about seeing how insane our society is, watching from a state of mind that the author feels is much more rational. Of course, like many of Mr. Warner's works, it comes off like an LSD anthem.

I like this rendition better than Gary Numan's. I think Marilyn Manson really brought out something new and awesome in this song that wasn't there before (which is the hallmark of a good cover).

I tend to agree with ithinkyourcrazy. Superb storytelling is definitely one of Melora's many talents, and this song exemplifies that.

Rasputina – Torniquet (Marilyn Manson cover) Lyrics 16 years ago
Moloy comment is especially ironic given that Rasputina covered "Tourniquet" and "Dried Up, Tied Up, and Dead to the World" as part of the tour during which Rasputina was opening for Marilyn Manson. He was probably present during the recording of "Tourniquet" and you can actually HEAR his VOICE at the beginning of the recording of "Dried Up". Melora definitely had mister Warner's blessing for those two covers.

Rasputina – A Quitter Lyrics 16 years ago
It's definitely describing a girl's suicidal ideation as a result of social alienation and dissociation, but I can't help but get the feeling there's another level to it as well.

Nickelback – Rockstar Lyrics 16 years ago
I think it's both a rock anthem and a bit of satire. We all want to be rockstars -- the lifestyle is basically everything a person could ever want. But it definitely pokes some fun at that lifestyle at the same time, at how it's shallow and self-destructive. But does that change its desirability? Would that stop anyone from hitting the road with their instruments, whiskey, and dexadrine? Of course not.

Queen Adreena – Kitty Collar Tight Lyrics 16 years ago
Just your basic sex-and-violence anthem, although expressed in Ms. Garside's extraordinarily poetic manner. The thing being put on could be anything from a choker to corset (both of which fit tightly) to a prophylactic (which are definitely on the snug side). But it's unquestionably about the kind of raw aggressive sex that requires you to take the next day off of work to avoid ackward questions about where all of those scratches, scrapes, friction burns, and subdermal hemhorrages came from.

Queen Adreena – Pretty Like Drugs Lyrics 16 years ago
Some people are extremely self-destructive. Normally, their associates intervene. But there are a few people in whom it just seems appropriate, and so no one does anything and just watches with interest. I'm sure you know someone like that -- the person everyone digs because his or her behaviour makes everyone else's vices seem tame, whose madness makes everyone else's seem less raging. Celebrities tend to be serious examples of this, and I think maybe this song is about that. Think maybe Ms. Garside is one of those people? Just an idea, think about it.

Nine Inch Nails – Heresy Lyrics 16 years ago
Funny how the song doesn't have a single line that's specific to Christianity*. It could very well refer to Jews. Notice how no one ever attacks this song as an attack on Jews or Sikhs?

The fact that people immediately assume that this song is about christians tells you something very interesting about christians, and how the world perceives them -- as blind, naive, bigoted, clueless murderers. Would this association be so easy, immediate, and universal if didn't contain a very serious kernel of truth? Something to think about.

* except maybe the line about the plague, referring to the belief among some bigots that the HIV virus exists to wipe out Homosexuals despite homosexuality existing in every society in all of history, and actually being COMMONPLACE in classical Greece -- a society that was conspicuously plague-free and upon which all western society is based...)
