| Placebo – Pure Morning Lyrics | 6 years ago |
|
What if its a song a woman sings to her best friend, another female. If her friend gets pregnant, maybe she feels her friendship will end, but because she passed the pregnancy test, and isn't pregnant they can stay friends. This can also be applicable to a man and a woman, and how their friendship will change forever when they have a child, and become parents but she passed the test and isn't pregnant so things can stay the same. This can also be applicable to a man and a woman, but where passing the test with a positive and becoming pregnant means they will have a lifelong commitment together and will never sever. It could mean any one of those three, just depends on your perspective. |

She can't take it anymore, she doesn't want to sugarcoat it anymore, she wants to sleep with this someone. This someone doesn't want to sleep with her, but not for any reason other then what it changes in their relationship. She is going to put them to bed, she is fucking crazy, and they are going to die at the end. She doesn't care if it ruins their friendship, she doesn't care if she never sees them again, to her, it's worth it. In French, the words "La petite mort" literally mean "the little death", but is used as a way to describe an orgasm during sex. To me, this is the same as she is going to "Sing you a lullaby where you die at the end." |

Sounds like we have stained our flag with the blood of Christ, and this had done nothing more then to drive us apart... "Our flag marked with blood, with the blood of our hands; our hands are marked with death, with the blood of the man; the man on the cross, and the cross on our hearts; has it done nothing more then to drive us apart..." |

| Awolnation – Sail Lyrics | 12 years ago |
|
After watching the music video, it seems like the song is about being different. Awol is running from something, like he is being chased, then he becomes paranoid and runs for his tape recorder, to record something before they reach him. The they is obviously something no one else believes in, and looking at the wall of photos, it seems extraterrestrial. He is saying come sail away with me, almost saying "believe me", like he knows or believes something everyone else does not. |

"if we can call them friends then we can call them on their telephones" It seems he is talking about personal friends, or people he has met "if we can call them friends then we can call them on red telephones" This seems like he is refering to the relationship between nations, and how the leaders call each other on red telephones I am not sure, but it sounds like it could be "red telephones" |

| St. Vincent – Paris Is Burning Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
I think when people say it is about the French Revolution, they are right. Think about these lyrics: "Dance poor people dance and drown Dance fair Paris to the ground" Jean-Baptiste Carrier, was a French Revolutionary, known for his cruelty to his enemies, especially to clergy. As the son of a middle class tenant farmer, Jean-Baptiste Carrier and his family survived on income reaped from cultivating the land of a French nobleman. As Adolphe Thiers states in his novel, "This frantic wretch imagined that he had no other mission than to slaughter." There may well have been a sexual motive to some of the developments he introduced to the killings, including the proposal that young male and female prisoners be tied together naked before the drownings, a method which was called a "Republican marriage". Carrier's violent means of carrying out orders to suppress the revolts against the Convention were what made him infamous. His vigorous action was endorsed by the Committee of Public Safety, and in the following days Carrier undertook the task of drowning the majority of resistance in the Loire. This murderous process, known as the Noyades ("drowning") of Nantes along with his increasing haughty and torturous demeanor, gained Carrier a reputation for wanton cruelty. In his mission to Normandy he had been very moderate, and it has been suggested that his mind had become unbalanced by the atrocities committed by the Vendean and royalist armies. He is quoted as being "...one of those inferior and violent spirits, who in the excitement of civil wars become monsters of cruelty and extravagance.".[citation needed] As Carrier's violent actions continued, more of the French people began to question his true motives. His paranoia eventually pushed him to ransack public storehouses, mills, and bake houses in an effort to find “military” resistance evidenced in hidden weapons, artillery, and gun powder. Finding little contraband, he nevertheless burned down buildings of every kind in what he identified as “revolting districts.” This is all from Wikipedia.... but it makes you think a lot. Lets hope this DOES NOT happen to the U.S.A., violence is never the answer. |

| Iron & Wine – Flightless Bird, American Mouth Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
"While I will admit, most of the comments involving Twilight, are similar and don't provide anything new to the meaning, for those intent on finding out the meaning, Twilight does work for this song. First off, to say the song wasn't made for the movie, could be jumping to conclusions. The song is one of Iron and Wine's singles, and it was made during 2008, and Twilight was also made in 2008. Second off, everyone is entitled to their opinions, and until Samuel Beam says otherwise, opinions are all we can go on. I do like the polical opinion of this song, but to say the political opinion and the Twilight opinion have no similarities is wrong. The political opinion basically stated by legsaregoing, is about the old baby boomer generation, and the rebellion back in the 60s. They seemed to have been searching for the true America, that had seemed to be lost in war, and racism. The baby boomers definatly had a few things right when it comes to peace love and the American dream, but unfortunately they seemed to be unable to fully voice what they were about, and were alienated. I also like the Twilight opinions, and they have merit here. The people who say otherwise OBVIOUSLY have not seen the movie, and we must excuse their ignorance. The best way to express my views of Twilight with the song, is to explain the lyrics. I will give an opinion about the Political POV, and the Twilight POV. A few points to be made from the lyrics: "Have I found you? Flightless bird, jealous, weeping Or lost you? American mouth Big pill looming" TWILIGHT: "Have I found you?" could represent Edward wondering if he has found his eternal lover. Spoiler Alert, but Edward does ask Bella to marry him, forever, and he has said that Bella does not know how long he has waited for her. Considering Edward is Immortal, Edward has waited a long time, and most likely has met many possible lovers in his past, but to no avail. "Flightless bird, jealous, weeping" could represent Bella. Bella is afraid of Edward disappearing, and never returning, after hearing this Edward realizes she is his flightless bird, a bird that can't and won't fly away. This could be vise verse i suppose and represent Edward, but considering the rest of the lyrics "jealous, weeping" best suits Bella, who is jealous and longs for his immortality so they can be together always. Again the "Big pill looming" has the same meaning as the political one below, but in a different situation. Bella always has the idea of Edward disappearing in the back of her mind, and so expects to lose him. POLITICAL: The singer seems to be questioning whether he has found the American dream he was talking about, or has he lost it. The big pill looming, could represent a thought of losing the dream, and the pill could represent a "numb it" anti depressant sort of pill. "Have I found you? Flightless bird, grounded, bleeding Or lost you? American mouth Big pill stuck going down" TWILIGHT: "Flightless bird, grounded, bleeding" could represnt how vunerable Bella is, especially as a human, and even more so when Edward isn't around. Many moments in the film/book this has happened. The pill stuck going down could represent the futility of living without one another, as the pill can't help since it is stuck. This can be represented when Edward thinks Bella is dead, and so tries to get himself killed, and when Bella tries to get into danger to bring Edward back. POLITICAL: The American Dream, is constantly attacked because it is grounded in one area or country, rather than everywhere or globally, which leaves it as easy prey. The pill was taken, possibly regrettably, and unfortunately it has been stuck going down. And so he has to face the truth. "And when the cops closed the fare I cut my long baby hair Stole me a dog-eared map And called for you everywhere" TWILIGHT: The lyrics can be easily opinionated here. Bella's dad was a cop, and his attitude towards Edward was very protective. The cops could also represent authority, which would represent the Volturi (Vampire Shadow Government), who forbids the love affair between Bella and Edward. To best understand the cutting of the hair, you might have to read the Political opinion, which would represent throwing in the towel, for the baby boomer generation. This could represent Bella and Edward giving into the Volturi and turning Bella into a vampire, even tho Edward wishes it not to be. Understanding the political opinion behind "Stole me a dog-eared map" you could easily represent that as a form of freedom, where Bella and Edward defy the Volturi and other vampires that wish to eat her, and love each other regardless of the normal. POLITICAL: The cops could represent, authority taking from them their last bit of youth (A fare). Then the generation seemed to put in their towels, cut their long hair, for a more normal hair style, they stole a map, which could represent some form of freedom, and called for the lost American dream everywhere. "Now I'm a fat house cat Nursing my sore blunt tongue Watching the warm poison rats Curl through the wide fence cracks Pissing on magazine photos Those fishing lures thrown in the cold and clean Blood of Christ mountain stream" TWILIGHT: This could be satire, for the movie. This could be Bella imagining a normal life, with Edward, without the vampires, immortality, and werewolves. It seems she would see this as a boring normal, and helpless life, of which she would rather have the latter, for she wishes to be with Edward forever, as an immortal. POLITICAL: This has been said here before, this is political satire, the fat house cat seems like it could be a way to describe becoming content with ones life, who is nursing their blunt tongue, which could represent recovering from voicing their opinion and protests. Watching the warm poison rats, could represent politicians worming their way outside, out of reach, where the cat can't do anything to get to them, for he/she is a house cat, stuck inside. Pissing on magazines could represent his new form of protest? Fishing lures and mountain stream, could represent the cat enjoying a life, just fishing and soaking in nature. Edited for grammar**" |

i think michinobu_zoned is the closest one, and what he says needs to be looked at. People need to stop taking the lyrics literaly and move on, i think these lyrics: "There's a ghost in me who wants to say "I'm sorry" Doesn't mean I'm sorry" are very easy to understand......... What needs more explaining are these lyrics: "In the first days of the spring time made you up and split from one thousand enemies made a trail of, of a thousand tears made you a prisoner inside your own secrecy" It does seem to be a reference to watership down, cause there is a rabbit in the video. But she seems to relate to the wolf in the video, with her eyes and the wolves eyes looking similar in the dark. The rabbit in watership down did not want to control his people and so the great frith created enimeies to control them instead. Maybe she is playing god (frith) and taking matters into her own hands?? |

O Holy Night! The stars are brightly shining, It is the night of the dear Savior's birth. Long lay the world in sin and error pining. Till He appeared and the soul felt its worth. A thrill of hope the weary soul rejoices, For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn. Fall on your knees! Oh, hear the angel voices! O night divine, O night when Christ was born; O night divine, O night, O night divine! Truly He taught us to love one another, His law is love and His gospel is peace. Chains shall he break, for the slave is our brother. And in his name all oppression shall cease. Sweet hymns of joy in grateful chorus raise we, Let all with in us praise His holy name. Fall on your knees! Oh, hear the angel voices! O night divine, O night when Christ was born; O night divine, O night, O night divine! Fall on your knees! Oh, hear the angel voices! O night divine, O night when Christ was born; O night divine, O night, O night divine! |

QUOTE: Raving Lunatic: "I think this song, as the title suggests, is about working together to change a community or government. "Entertain ideas of great communion, shelter not materials in union. All we praise is not the kind of commerce. That's the right solution!" These lines say we must work together (communion) not for capitalist purposes (not materials) but for something other than "commerce," something greater and more important. That's the right solution!" _______________________________________________________________________________________ It was this response that made me want to reply. I didn't like that anti-capitalist vibe Raving Lunatic sent. I want to point out Sufjan's EXACT words -All we praise is not the kind of commerce That's the right solution!- To me this is sarcastic, saying we never praise a type of commerce that has proven to work in past societies, we seem to only praise what is NOT THE KIND OF COMMERCE we should use. Example is raving lunatics picking and choosing the kind of commerce that is the problem. And "Entertain ideas of great communion" mean to do simply that, entertain them, do not implement them, it is only an idea to work from. And "Shelter not materials in union" means to me, not to horde riches, but to have an entrepreneur type of spirit, of investment. --"All Good Thoughts" In Spite Of Righteousness is not the Kind Of Thoughts In Spite Of Greatness.-- How can a "Good Thought" be in spite of righteousness? To me this seems like the "Good Thought" could be like a Robin Hood. On that it seems at first "Good" but isn't morally righteous, because he is stealing. Then Sufjan goes on to say these "Good Thoughts" are not in spite of greatness, meaning they are for becoming "Great". This means "Good Thoughts" without righteousness could lead to self exaltation. --Often Now The State Is Advocation if We Form A Power Of Recognition.-- This is a statement for the naysayers to pay attention too, for it recognizes the State(Government) as a source of Advocation, an advocater is one that argues for a cause; a supporter or defender aka All Good Naysayers. Sufjan states often the state is of advocation if there is a power of recognition, like a historic figure of civil, and individual rights, (Righteousness) such as Gandhi, MLK, JFK, Ron Paul. Yes i believe the lyrics state: "Often Now The State Is Advocation if We Form A Power Of Recognition." -Properties, ideas, a woman's pleasure Is empowered by love, a perfect measure!- Simply genius! The answer is love! lol |

If Sufjan Stevens and St. Vincent, were to create some sort of play or script with eachother in it. I could see Sufjan Stevens playing Jesus, and St. Vincent or (Annie Clark) playing Satan. Remeber its just for pretend, its a play. But Seeing the relation both have to god, this would be a very entertaining play to see. I made this assuption because of her many other songs, and myself being a fan of both her and sufjan's music. I also see Sufjan as using his real name or (True Self) in his band/music, and St Vincent uses her (False Self) a made up egotistical name. |

If Sufjan Stevens and St. Vincent, were to create some sort of play or script with eachother in it. I could see Sufjan Stevens playing Jesus, and St. Vincent or (Annie Clark) playing Satan. AFTERTHOUGHT: "Still I know that you can take it to the Lord" "But I know that you can take it to the Lord" This also seems like it could be a play on words, with War, instead of Lord, its almost like they are said at the same time... SECRETS!!!! lol Or i could be hearing things |

kickingpuddles you could be right about the dreaming, to me it seems definitely a day dream, much like the day dreaming you do alone while awake. "I'm all for moderation, but sometimes it seems Moderation itself can be a kind of extreme Being alone, it can be quite romantic Like Jacques Cousteau underneath the Atlantic A fantastic voyage to parts unknown Going to depths where the sun's never shone And I fascinate myself when I'm alone" Reminds me of smoking SMK alone lol :D, good times |

QUOTE bbgamazing: "are you sure it's "It's the love that changes gifts to everyone" and not "it's the love that Jesus gives to everyone"? " It does sound like that, or at least a play of words to sound like that. Saul Alinsky's influence can be related to present day because of Obama's past experience with "Community Organizing" as a job. According to Saul tho, the answer to politics is a "say anything" attitude, to "win" in all of politics. I think what Sufjan sings about is love, and how you can relate a "say anything" attitude with love. "Still I know that you can take it to the Lord" "But I know that you can take it to the Lord" Personally i see it as, not giving love to Saul Alinsky, or a politician, because of the attitude, but to give it to the Lord. If the play on words is intentional then the Lord = "Jesus" Christ. But if it isn't intentional, you can somewhat put together the fact that Sufjan sings about his own experiences, and then look at his Christian background. |

Sister say a prayer for us One we learn from nuns and such I wont believe not a word you speak just make it sweet to hear Lets pour wine in coffe cups, gather round the neighborhood, And shine the headlights on houses untill all the news is good What would your mother say What would your father do What would the neighbors think How am i supposed to sleep Roaming blackouts on the streets Not a word, not another speech will run the headlights down These kids are foaming at the mouth Psychotropic capricorns Tommorows some kind of stranger land where all the news is good What would your mother say What would your father do What would the neighbors think If they only knew......... knew........ How can one day be alright Then on tuesday loose my mind Tommorows some kind of stranger who im not supposed to see What would your mother say What would your father do What would the neighbors think If they only knew......... knew........ Lyrics as i hear them, 2nd input would help! |

| Sufjan Stevens – The Henney Buggy Band Lyrics | 17 years ago |

To me, it's about being selfish and doing something that's important to you, and how that idea conflicts with the idea that the only way to salvation is through sacrifice and self-denial. He's telling Father John that he has his own morality. I think this is very close to what sufjan intended, tho just remember his songs are sometimes about personal situations, and you cant really know for sure till he tells ya |

the lyrics are a bit wrong aswell "A clear heart of our own peers eyes me shiver on the seats" should be: "a clear heart of us appears as we shiver on the seats" and "clouds" should be: "glass" |

Its the same; seems like he is referring to a feeling about someone its about a different person and he is feeling the same way he did before |

cloudwoven you nailed it threw experience, there was a girl i fell in love with and tryed so desperatly to win over for 6 months straight, and when i had nothing left to give, she pretty much dissapeared, not entirely tho, we keep in touch but i found out she has been in love with someone else the whole time, so my efforts were pretty useless, but maybe theyll help later on down the road. but indeed i was the one worth leaving, she needs her chance to win her love over before i can get a chance this song is that little part of my life |
