I have just read the INXS autobiography. It is rumoured that Michael Hutchence sings "I'm better than Oasis" during the song, instead of one of the "Elegantly Wasted" lines. This song was recordde shortly after Michael presented an award to Oasis, wher Liam said that they shouldn't be getting their award from a has been. Anyone tried listening closely to the song to determine whether this is true ? |

I too love this song. On his box set CD Billy explains that this was based on characters in a bar he used to play the piano man. I first heard this song whilst studying English Literature at University, and by co-incidence was reading "The Iceman Cometh" by Eugene O'Neill. If you like this song, try reading the book, it is about a number of people in a bar who have "pipe dreams", and when forced to look at themselves and to try and attain said dreams they fall into despair and lose their identities, as their (unrealsitic) ambitions are the only tings that make their lives worthwhile, and how by having their dreams trampled they lose their identities. |

I heard that Bruce Springsteen liked this song, and took it as a compliment rather than an insult, which according to Paddy from Prefab was how it was intended. Was just meant to highlight the differences between singers and their songs. |
