MC Paul Barman – Cock Mobster Lyrics 13 years ago
No comments yet on this brilliant work of poetry? Though shallow on the surface, this song is really about the moral and ethical issues involved in introducing a western way of living and thinking to indigenous cultures around the world and the impacts this has on our planet's cultural diversity. Think about it.

Ugly Casanova – Here's To Now Lyrics 13 years ago
I think that's only half of the story. To me this song seems to be about the dichotomy of living in the now vs. planning for the future.

On the one hand, when people live for the future they build up cities that and systems of living that separate them from their basic nature, so that's a vote for living in the now. Apricots and apples are delicious, so despite the potential poisons in them, eat up. That's another vote for the now.

On the other hand, living in the now can really screw up stuff later. There are poisons in the fruits that we've been too shortsighted to fully understand. Our cities and infrastructure have been built in a way that doesn't really consider the future implications of the damage they've done to the planet. Eventually there might not even be a "now" to toast.

So these cities are messed up because they've been built with an ignorance of the now, but they're also messed up because they've been built with an ignorance of the future...so what's the right path? Is there one?

seventynine, about stubborn beauty

these lines give me chills every time I hear them. I think it's a marginally more optimistic version of the title "exit does not exist" in that "exit does not exist" seems to mean there's no way out, especially in a religious sense. In judeo-christian beliefs there's an afterlife and in eastern religion (hinduism/buddhism) there's the endless cyle of death and rebirth of samsara leading to reincarnation. Either way the message is that as there has always been awareness, so there will always be. The message of "exit does not exist is that it's an unfortunate situation, that he wants out to no avail. With "stubborn beauty" the message seems to be that everything-as difficult and unpleasant as it may be-is inherently beautiful, but there's still no escaping it, which is the stubbornness of it. He's not necessarily happy about it, but has at least come to terms with it.

Röyksopp – Remind Me Lyrics 18 years ago
it's just about the facet of the human condition where one is never happy with what one has and where one is.

when he was in England he was constantly missing his home (Norway in this case, I guess) and began to build it up in his mind as the place where he actually wants to be, where he can be happy, maybe. so this time England's the place he goes and something there-or something that's not there- is what reminds him of and makes him dwell on being back home in Norway where maybe he had had a girlfriend and it didn't work out or he had to leave. the love that traveled far actually just traveled in him and it finally caught up with him that he might have missed out on something really good.

so he finally goes back to Norway all psyched because he built it up so much in his mind as this magical place where he can finally find happiness. but soon after he gets there, he realizes that it's just as bleak as before, except maybe moreso sinch things have changed and old friends are no longer around, so he can't remember what could have made him think it would be so magical, it's no better than when he left.

He does manage to meet back up with his ex, but they soon realize they don't have much in common anymore. additionally, he doesn't have the balls to be direct with her about what he's really thinking and is instead talking in circuitous metaphors, receiving the cold shoulder in return.

all this disappointment makes him want to get away, think of another place and time where he thinks he could go back to and find happiness, which he'll chase with similar results, and everywhere he goes he just finds more places that he'll look back on later and chase fruitlessly.

the song has a numb quality that reflects his jaded view of what's going on. It's happened enough that he's noticed the pattern, but seems to have no want to change it.

Ugly Casanova – Cat Faces Lyrics 19 years ago
"they say his teeth are wood and they want my pictures of him."
George Washington was known to have wooden false teeth, and the "pictures of him" that "they" want is a metaphor for money
