George Harrison – Awaiting on You All Lyrics 14 years ago
It can hardly be a criticism of organised religion in general when George was a card-carrying Hare Krishna at this time (indeed, he wanted to shave his head and move into a temple but ISKCON's founder, Srila Prabhupada, told him he could be more use to the movement with his music).

What it actually is is a scathing attack on both the Catholic church ("the Pope owns 51 per cent of General Motors...", etc.) and those that profess to have a religion and to want to know to God–'Sunday Christians'–but in fact only pay lip-service to him when it suits them, i.e. one a week in Church or when they want something. The song's also effectively an advertisement for Bhakti-Yoga–or devotion, particularly through chanting the Hare Krishna mantra–to Krishna: "by chanting the names of the Lord you'll be free/the Lord is awaiting on you all to awaken and see". Jesus is mentioned because in Vaishnava (Hare Krishna) thought, Jesus was a great teacher of Bhakti-Yoga–Prabhupada used to say that the name was the same, Krishna and Christ, and that by chanting "Hare Christ" it would have much the same effect.

George Harrison – What Is Life Lyrics 18 years ago
George didn't tend to write songs about Jesus, being Krishna conscious and all. It's definitely about Love for God (Krishna), as many of his songs were, but probably not Jesus.

George Harrison – Beware Of Darkness Lyrics 18 years ago
It's telling you to be wary of the material darkness and illusion ('maya') that's all around us, and not to forget the true meaning of life; devotion to the lord Sri Krsna, or God.

George Harrison – Living In The Material World Lyrics 18 years ago
George wasn't a Buddhist. Buddhism is non-theistic. Sri Krsna is God, he was part of the Krishna Consciousness, or 'Hare Krishna' movement, based on Hindu Vedic teachings. When he says he wants to get out of this place by Krsna's grace, he simply means he wants to stop the cycle of birth and rebirth and get to heaven to be with God. The song itself is just about how the material world isn't really real, it's all temporary, the spiritual abode of God is where he really wants to be.

Pink Floyd – Wish You Were Here Lyrics 19 years ago
I.E. Syd Barrett.
But it's also about the industry that was responsible for his mental downfall, exchanging cold comfort for change, becoming a lead role in a cage, it all points to being in the public eye and being nothing more than an exhibit for everyone to look at and expect great things from. It was too much for the poor guy, and he cracked.
It's also worth noting Syd didn't have schizophrenia, he didn't hallucinate, he wasn't constantly paranoid, no-one, including his sister Rosemary with whom he lived was really sure about what was wrong with him. It was a nervous breakdown, rather than a specific condition.

Pink Floyd – Wish You Were Here Lyrics 19 years ago
It's about the music industry and how it can chew you up and spit you out if you're not careful, and so can too obviously be applied to Syd.

Fleetwood Mac – The Green Manalishi Lyrics 19 years ago
GREEN Manalishi = Money
Two-Pronged Crown = The Devil
It's about a dream Peter had when he was visited by a devil dog, telling him how money evil was, etc. By this time he was well on his way to Schizophrenia, and this was the last song he recorded with the Mac, before he walked out when the rest of the band refused to give their money away.

Cat Stevens – Father And Son Lyrics 19 years ago
"Father & Son is probably one of my most appreciated and well-loved songs; many people feel they can relate directly to it through their own experience of the generation gap within their families. In fact, the song was originally composed for a musical I was writing back in 1969 about the Russian Revolution. The story is about a son who wanted to leave home and sacrifice the comfort of country life in order to join the Revolution."

Jefferson Airplane – Wooden Ships Lyrics 19 years ago
Yeah, I think the lyrics is 'coat'. And what's with the bit at the beginning?

Anyway, I believe this song is about the horrors of a post-nuclear war scenario, and two soldiers from opposite sides have just stumbled across each other.

As for the Wooden Ships bit, I think brycec3 is right, it seems to be about leaving this annhilated world and going somewhere better... I imagine probably through Acid knowing the Airplane.

Donovan – Hurdy Gurdy Man Lyrics 19 years ago
jtucker7 is right, a Hurdy Gurdy is a Mediaeval instrument. Before Television, Radio and Press were invented, the 'Hurdy Gurdy Man' was a minstrel with one of these instruments that would travel from town to town singing, and that was how people that lived in these towns would hear about news from around the country.

Donovan is singing about himself as the 'Hurdy Gurdy Man', as a bringer of news, news about the new world Donovan and the rest of the hippie movement wanted to create.
