Rory Gallagher – Pistol Slapper Blues Lyrics 17 years ago
Yes, Jordy, this song was originally by "Blind Boy" Fuller, who was a blues musician. That's about all I know about Fuller, but Rory always seemed to take a shine to early blues music, rather than the modern blues. For example, listen to his rendition of the Muddy Waters song "Can't Be Satisfied" on youtube, and the re-make of "On the Western Plains" off his Montreux DVD. But that's just to name a couple of these, there's many more out there.

Kenny Chesney – From Hillbilly Heaven, To Honky Tonk Hell Lyrics 18 years ago
I read on a lyrics site that Kenny Chesney wasn't the original writer of this song, and when Chesney/Lawrence/Jones collaborated on this they must have known the outreach of listeners would triple just by doing that. Whether the trio of voices was purposeful, or just a simple collaboration, each verse sang by a different artist seems to tell a part of the story from each singer's point of view, it was chosen so carefully. As you can tell, this isn't just another tear-jerker to me like it may be for some, I'm from Hazard, Kentucky, and I've worked inside the coal mines in Hazard Kentucky. I know the spelling is different, and more than likely a different place was meant, but I've seen this very thing happen to people from all walks of life, young and old. When I'm coming home, I drive by nice homes, but many are broken. As you can notice, I'm not giving an interpretation of this song, it explains itself. "Tugit", if you don't mind, i'd just like to say thanks for the comment on this, because what struck you about the song really knocked me for a home run. For whatever reason, people choose this path of life to lead, and no matter what people say, you can't tell who it's going to happen to. Where I've been involved with mining before, I guess I can "finish the painting" and pick up where this song leaves off, whether I want to or not, because when you've been to your first funeral over this kind of stuff you know it's real.

The Black Crowes – Sister Luck Lyrics 19 years ago
This song illustrates to me the image of Robinson looking at an aspect of his life from a view other than first person. Endless days, the wear and tear of your own personal hangups mixed with the subjection to typical attitudes of the life of a member of a rock band seem to speak loud in this song. I can't help but picture a lone man sitting alone in a darkened window, peering outside at a sunny day where everyone else is having fun, laughing, and enjoying themselves, while the lone man sits with a void stare at them, contemplating why he isn't outside with them, however he can't seem to find the answer(s). So many stereotypes of a non-stop lifestyle are present in this song to me. "Held my hand over a candle
Flame burnin' but I never weep" tells me of an absolute "crashing" of the human body after so much. Suppose he is saying the lifestyle he has chosen is great...for a while. Then, you need some downtime, you need to be that lone man in the window to attempt to find solitude in order to get your priorities in line. This song is writhing full of a depresive mood, right down to the lone chords that slash through the introduction, before the other instruments begin to play. However, I choose not to call this a simplistic "depression" song, or a "bad day" song, simply because of who wrote this. This was performed by one of the most noted "party bands" of all time, and I think that this song says a whole lot more than just describing a feeling. It instead shakes you, saying "listen to me, don't just hear me". Remember this is my own personal feeling toward the song.

Sevendust – Skeleton Song Lyrics 19 years ago
What is a body without a skeleton? a formless mass withering and writhing on the ground, on the dirt. A skeleton enables you to stand, to take a stand, to make a stand, to live. Music is the writer's life, and it is so that he feels it is the best way to convey his emotions, the way he feels. "So I lose myself in a song again" says it all for me. This is one of those tricky songs, it's so well-written that I cannot simply "sum it up". You have to listen to this song instead of hear it, i believe it's there you will find your own interpretation of it. "There's nothing wrong
In being far from right"...

Alice in Chains – We Die Young Lyrics 19 years ago
Please keep in mind this is my own personal interpretation of this song, but I feel like this is a song about war. The guitarist, Jerry Cantrell, had a father who was a veteran in a war, and was highlighted in the video for their later song "Rooster". Although the guitarist himself said the song was about underage filth and crime, maybe the images of the brave men fighting for our country (who were also very young) tied in with his image of the drug use he saw (There were also a large number of soldiers who abused narcotics in Korea/Vietnam). Suppose an image of deja vu came over him, something clicked, and this song was born. But, again, this is my own interpretation, this is how I see the song. Either way, it's still an incredible portrayal of violence, and the horrors for which it bestows. (I had a pretty wild take on this song at first. I thought "Scary's..." was a modified word in place of "Gerrie's..." (not sure on spelling) as what soldiers called the enemy in war. I was almost convinced it was this until I began to read what others wrote, then I changed my opinion. All in all, I think a song is your own personal meaning, how you take it.)
