George Harrison – My Sweet Lord Lyrics 18 years ago
Interestingly enough all of the Hare Krishna chants are from the background singers. I was recently at a service for a friend. Her son played this song and sang it. Because he did it solo, it didn't include the chants. My friends are Christians, so it's kind of easy to see how one could adapt it to either religion.

Eric Clapton – Bell Bottom Blues Lyrics 18 years ago
A lot of people forget about this song. It isn't generally in the rotation of your basic classic rock sh*t station. I sing it during a set and people go off. It is just laying there in the back of their minds...

The Doors – Love Her Madly Lyrics 18 years ago
This used to be my fav Doors song, because the idea of someone loving a woman until he went mad it just brilliant. Then I found out that Morrison didn't write it. It kind of blew it for me. It's stupid that I don't have the same feeling about it, but imagining Robby Kreiger singing it is just not as hot as Morrison. I can imagine Kreiger (sp) being the object of unrequited love, but Morrison is another story. It's a bit sexier when the object of unrequited love is hot, hot, hot. "Wanna be her daddy?"

Alice in Chains – I Stay Away Lyrics 18 years ago
O.k.! I admit it! I'm a VH1 whore. Anyway, I recently saw Jerry Cantrell in an interview and he commented on the fact that he wrote most of the lyrics for most of the songs (he is actually credited for doing such, he is not just claiming this). It's kind of like everyone assuming that Jim Morrison wrote all of the Doors lyrics. Morrison did not write the lyrics for any of the top 40 hits except L.A. Woman. Similarly, Cantrell, who is/was not a drug addict, does not ALWAYS write about heroin and addiction. The glaring exception is The Rooster.

Led Zeppelin – Stairway to Heaven Lyrics 18 years ago
Hey Mr. No Name...I think that there is absolutely no intentional or unintentional backmasking on this song; however, since the advent of digital recording technology in the 1990s, intentional backmasking has not only been made possible, but quite commonplace. Most often, it is done as a joke. Weird Al and others have done it. It's hysterical.

Hole – Doll Parts Lyrics 18 years ago
I have that book about it, and Kut explains it. While Kurt was courting Courtney they were in Europe on tour. Both bands. This was just before Nevermind blew up. Anyway, Kurt WAS obsessed with dolls and removing various body parts and he used to send the parts to Courtney. I'll leave the interpretation of that metaphor up to you guys. Personally I think it's about how they were both broken and needed to be put back together.

BTW, Phatgrrrl, the process of making, marketing and distributing an album at is FASTEST is about 4 months, and that's AFTER it has been written. The making of a glass master for the cd alone takes at least a week. Thus there is no way that Courtney could have been talking about his death at this point.

Gwen Stefani – Cool Lyrics 18 years ago
Doesn't the guy in the video look a lot like Tony?!! My husband and I freaked when we saw it. We opened for No doubt before Tragic Kingdom came out, and we thought they were a great couple. We hear all of her songs and swear that they will reunite someday. My husband is one who is very against divorce, but this situation changed his mind! :) It's totally about Tony.

Pink Floyd – Wish You Were Here Lyrics 18 years ago
This is another one of those songs that's fun to interpret, but Roger Waters gave most of it away in an early interview with Rolling Stone. It is about Syd (as most of you have said) and Roger's dad who died in WWII. Roger was very bitter about this loss and wrote many, many songs about it including most of The Wall.

Here is a site that doesn't necessarily prove anything, but it uses FACTS to disprove many of these posts. Some of the things written here are simply impossible based on dates of events and the chronology of them. http://www.understandingamericanpie.com
Before I get flamed, I KNOW that the poetry of the song is all open for interpretation, but some of the facts I've read in these posts are impossible just because of simple dates and chronology.

And by the way, if you don't want to try and interpret song meanings, why do you come to this website?

Don McLean – American Pie Lyrics 18 years ago
oops, P.S. someone mentioned that Sgt. Pepper was referenced as a meaning in the song. Actually, that album was a conceptual response to the Beach Boys' Pet Sounds.

More substantiation that Bob Dylan is the "The Jester". Bob Dylan did perform for Queen Elizabeth and Prince Phillip in a red windbreaker no less. The voice doesn't refer to his raspiness, but his poetic voice. He was able to convey what all anti-war individuals didn't have the clout to.

Helter Skelter in the summer swelter...the murders occurred on one of the hottest days of the year in Bel Air/Beverly Hills area. However, Helter Skelter is a roller coaster in the U.K. and the Beatles were referring to bad relationships. Chuckie Manson got it a bit wrong. : )

Led Zeppelin – Stairway to Heaven Lyrics 18 years ago
Oh, and eiram, the piper's calling you to join him refers to St. Patrick leading the snakes out of Ireland. That's one of the Celtic references. Jimmy Page was much more into Celtic religions than he was into "Satanism" silly one. Just read the Page/Plant interviews in Rolling Stone and Playboy Magazine.

Anyway Plant wrote most of the lyrics in his mansion known as Headley Grange in Worcestershire, England. Once again, this is from the Page/Plant interviews. It IS stream of consiousness writing, but it's very silly to think the devil moved his hand when he was writing about Celtic lore. Celts existed B.C.

Led Zeppelin – Stairway to Heaven Lyrics 18 years ago
Straight from the horses mouth: bustle in your hedgrow...it's just a spring clean for the May queen

This means don't worry if things seem unsettling right now, it just means that there are changes around the corner (the Tower card in Tarot)

bustle in your hedgerow in American terms would mean rattling at your fence while spring clean for the May queen means the spring cleaning of your mind or soul

When I look to the west...Aleister Crowley, Page, Anton LaVey, etc. all used the pentagram in their work (by the way, it refers to hedonism and is a symbol from B.C.; thus, it doesn't necessarily refer to Satan) Anyway, with the pentagram, looking to the west means looking to the dark...sun rises in the east, right?

A lot of the song refers to celtic symbolism. Page said this himself. However, he also said it was stream of conscious writing based on what he was reading at the time...he was reading Celtic writings and Crowley.

Queen – Killer Queen Lyrics 18 years ago
I hate to be a b*tch, but every line gives its own answer...many of your comments refer to historical inaccuracies due to timelines...here we go...

Everything up through the first chorus is referring in general to the well-groomed "Will and Grace" & "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy" gay man.

The Kruschev and Kennedy line is basically referring to "if they'd just get it over with and make it then everything would be fine."

Dynamite with a laser beam. Are you freaking kidding me? Are there no gay men on this site? Laser beam is weenie!

Gunpowder/gelatin think people think...what shoots out of a "laserbeam" and is a sticky gelatin substance?

Guaranteed to BLOW your mind! Do you really not get this yet?

Insatiable an appetite...a common stereotype for gay men.

To avoid complications, she never kept the same address. Yes, yes, yes! You got it, a high class TRANNY, well paid at that.

The Geisha line refers to the most famous of all transvestites, Madame Butterfly! I can't believe no one got that one

If you are that way inclined...again, how literal does Freddy have to be for you guys to get it.

Momentarily out of action...a female prostitute could go all night, but a male would need a short period for recovery, ya know.

If you think playful as a pussycat refers to a woman, think again. It refers to a man who is as COY as a woman.

Some people think the last lines are "wanna try..wanna try" they are actually "What a Drag"

That says it all... now, if you want to take an introductory poetry class, let me know. The first thing you'd learn is that metaphors are not mixed. A message in a poem is generally consistent. Freddy Mercury is one of the greatest poets in music. I doubt he'd mix his metaphors.

Sorry again to be so bitchy.
