Portishead – Wandering Star Lyrics 18 years ago
And after reading every one's comments fully, ya, suggesting where you can pick up a friendly bible or bible study is kinda MEH... I suggest going to any hotel and opening the dresser drawer or going online. I feel the wandering stars aren't necessarily devils or demons themselves, but that without a path, they will become the prey of such demons, and eventually will cause others pain and grief because of their inflicted misery. I LOVE bikertrash's metaphor. Also, without guidance or a path (which I guess Bob can supply), we won't head toward a destination, but instead wander around the darkness forever, as opposed to when we're not wandering, we'll wind up somewhere, and our path is in the light as opposed to the darkness. I have a discrepency on one of the lines.....
THOSE WHO HAVE SEEN THE NEEDLES I NOW TREAD
meaning those who have gone before me on this destination-less black wandering ground which is full of misery and pointlessness, the other miserable wandering stars, are like empty husk, outside shells with nothing inside filling them with purpose, meaning, and fulfillment. The singer is "doubling up" inside of herself to take a break from the outside world, which she perceives is sending her this grief... she feels that she will get relief inside of herself, when in fact, the real pain is inside, and she feels that this is "cruel", that she is being "taunted".... but the true relief is after dealing with the pain that is truly a result of perceiving things incorrectly or pursuing the wrong things, all things which can be fixed inside.

This song has a special meaning to me.....
In the summer of 2005, I had a crazy release of inhibitions, followed by a 3 month string of experiences that were intense, drug-speckled, and almost spiritual. I had a roommate burn a CD for me, containing this song on it. I was helping film an indie movie in Downtown Los Angeles about exstasy. I got into a conversation with a homeless man that was near the set, and we got into an amazing conversation. He was telling me that life itself would make the most amazing movie, if only people wouldn't break character all the time, which they do. He wanted to give one of the sheltered crew members an intense experience, and so he crossed Santa Fe St. in Downtown LA in the middle of the night and took a hit off of his crack pipe. This didn't take me out of my ordinary perception of reality as much as did my ride I took right after this. He came back and said "If you really wanna see what life is like on this side of the tracks, take a drive.... drive down 8th st. until you hit wall, go to 4th st. and come back here...." I did just this, happened to be rolling for the first time ever, and my whole drive was serenaded by this amazingly perfect, soul-wrenching, depth-finding song. As William S. Burroughs said, "You become a narcotics addict because you do not have strong motivations in any other direction. Junk wins by default.”
Unless we have a destination or a path set out for us, we become these wandering stars. Some are lucky enough to have relatively mediocre, socially acceptable, and sometimes somewhat fulfilling passtimes and fillers to take up our attention and distract us from finding our life purpose, living fully, and engaging with full fledged passion into what we're here to do. I don't think Ravendaymon's comments are to be scrutinized, but welcomed with a breath of relief. We all have a God.... whether it be Zeus, Yahweh, Jesus, Allah, money, sex, women, drugs, apathy, laziness, scientific progress, or what have you. For me though, this song will always represent that bottom one finds when searching for the ultimate experience, but through the eyes of a materialistic world-view, in which crack cocaine would be the rocks upon which a wandering star will wash up. Unending grief, searching for the next fix, which will only bring an illusion of relief. The only time they will suffer less is when they will no longer have to awaken to their present reality. their stomachs cramp, they double up with pain, feeling their insides empty of food and of fulfillment: physical and spiritual.
And shortly after I arrived back to the set from my drive, I came across a true monster. A man standing on the corner, wanting to know if I wanted the rock. A man with eyes that held no expression, no life, no end.... only infinitely deep darkness. I could see right past this monster's mask, and I was then so glad that the monsters of our world do wear masks to feed upon their prey. The preying and predating is bad enough, but to see the evils, intentions, and capabilities of these people is even more gut-wrenching and heinous.

Yes – Close to the Edge Lyrics 18 years ago
I definitely agree with SongMeaningGuy 's interpretation of the "rearrange your liver to the solid mental grace" part. No matter what substance you're talking about, it's all an attempt to help your body toward a state it could achieve naturally or though some other means..... even the state of hallucination and psychadelic experience can be produced without drugs. And as much as I believe some of the band members partook of the 70's fun, I believe they were in it for opening the window of the mind to see what was on the other side, but they, unlike others, found the substance-free door which allowed them to walk through and be able to experience and live in a world unlike the one in which most of us live, and to give all of us a chance to view it in this way.

Devo – Whip It Lyrics 18 years ago
I forget who it was, but a friend of mine in a rehab I went to told me that Devo (standing for De Evolution) was a band that took an 80's progressive approach to the growing commercialization, loss of ideals, and corporatization of the 80's as opposed to the 70's in America. When they say whip it, they mean for us to get our act together. In the music video, they're wearing flower pots on their head, but they are facing down, indicating that we are growing in reverse, de evolving and deteriorating instead of growing. But don't worry, it's not too late. If we try to detect it, we will, and we can get straight and move forward again.
