Tool – Mantra Lyrics 18 years ago
Not sure how relevant this is cos I haven't heard the song myself. But King Crimson also so a song called Mantra. KC are one of Tools influences, as per an interview with MJK and Robert Fripp

I almost totaly agree with you kalane, except it feels to me that the woman in question instead of changing into something he doesnt like, simply does not feel the same way about him anymore.

He still loves her and through the song makes the decision to leave her because she will be happier that way. All he truly wants is to see her happy.

Metallica – Master of Puppets Lyrics 18 years ago
Yea dispite all te arguements against this... im still in favour of the song being about war.. it fits in with so many other songs past and future of this song...

my justification for this...
Master... the superior officers etc whom soldiers (puppets) take mindless orders from
Blinded by me.. propaganda
the crawling is obvious... through mud.. shell going off around u etc.

And like its been mentiond brfore, it fits in with the album art too, the puppet stings coming down into war graves...

but anyway.. im gonna take this time to piss you guys off.. see how many reactions i get.. maybe start a bit of band to band hatred...

The thing i hate about the metallica fans (most of them anyway) is how 99.9% of the posts are saying the same thing as some person before him or just saying somthing like yea metallica is awesome.. not all that of a valuble comment..
I am a tool fan myself, dont get me wrong 'tellica are ok... but only that. If you guys beefore u send off your abuse, care to check out the tool comments and interpretations on this site. You will find them deep, meaningful and for more of a point origanal.. Its very thought provoking looking though the analysis of songs such as Third Eye, Lateralus, Parabol and Jambi.
check it out somtine.

Metallica – Slither Lyrics 18 years ago
Man i hate it when someone mocks a band and everyone else jumps in and abuses him for it... well actualy i find it kinda amusing.. stupid idiots shuld always be diplomatic when mocking somthing..

I agree that the most stupid thing is when a such a good band as metallica sells out so catistrophicly see them selling dvds of there just general life makes me sick.
however i do like metallica for there music, even load and reload. like the rest of the world, st anger=meh,

Now that i got that out of the way, i see this song being (like many metal songs) about war, "see you crawling" and :there aint no heroes here" fit into that genre so nicly...

and the whole verse

Oh, play the game so nicely
Oh, check, it's your move now
Yeah, we're standing in this jungle
Yeah, with some things I have found

"the game" is chess which is a war game in itself and is often used as a metaphor for war. when i hear "jungle" i think vietnam, infact the whole snake theme fits in there quite well, america went there looking for a war and they sure as hell got one. well thats sterotyping americans i apologise, it works vice versa, look at wat happened wen any country attacks another country, generaly, they fight back.

the puppets with the tap shoes are soldiers, doing a final march through town or watever before heading overseas.

Havent i seen you here before.. obvious, war, it just keeps happening

Metallica – Carpe Diem Baby Lyrics 18 years ago
What i find really cool is that a more literal translation of "carpe diem" is "pluck the day" (see wikipedia) which is cool cos Seize and Pluck rhymes with Squeeze and Suck...
The message is still the same tho... seize the day, for tommorow we may die

Tool – Jambi Lyrics 18 years ago
Kickingbird: by saying i, it and son rfer to to maynard, do you mean that he would wish himself away? that sort of doesnt make much sence...
i think him wishing his lifestyle away would make more sence... like SoBe8503 said..

I think that yes this song was meant to be recieved on at least 2 levels.. the more obvious being about his mother.

But like most song i can sorta feel a big spiritual/religious over tone. the first thing i think when i hear the first line is dwarves and odinism. and christianity through the devil, although that could just be a general refernce to personified evil...

Im pretty sure its "prayed like a matyr dusk till dawn" as well...

"Dim my eyes" sounds like hes trying to avoid or shelter himself form the light that seems to overwhelm him and he supports in the rest of the song.. not sure what thats about.

another thing that confuses me is breathe in union, in union with what? i dont think he is refering to his mother there.. dunno

one thing i am sure about is the leeches at the end is reference to "ticks and leeches" from lateralus..

Sorry for the lack of order

Metallica – No Leaf Clover Lyrics 19 years ago
Well....

1. Verses

Note the point of view changes in the verses, as well as the progression,

Verse 1 being from the more dominant of the 3(?) characters, as seen in using the the word "boy". also this voice seems somewhat jovial like someone seedy yet somewhat imposing (like a boss) trying to convince the boy into doing a job for him.

Verse 2 is from the point of view of the "boy" agreeing to do whatever job this guy has for him, he is seen being less significant or dominant compared to the other character through refering to the other character as "sir".

Verse 3-"dont it feel right like this" is in the view of the crowd or watchers or whatever, as denoted by the personal pronoun "they". they are talking about the boy commenting that hes trying to achieve somthing far too quickly, "sucker for that quick reward". however for the boy, everything seems to be going right, "all the pieces fall to his wish", this verse shows foreshadowing to what is going to be the downfall of this boy

2. Chorus
I see "light at the the end of your tunnel" reffering to the one big reason to be doing what your doing, such as charity workers who work to help people, the helping being their light. or the money at the end of the day for the worker.

The frieght train could either be the realisation (internal) or the actuality (external) of something going wrong in the boy's big plan, that completly devastates him. There is an interesting (and almost ironic) link between a frieght train being fast and unstopable and his "soothing light" being in the form of a *quick* reward.

3. Futher analysis

In Classical Greece, it was thought that all heros had a fatal flaw that would bring their downfall.
- Oedipus' urge to find the truth caused him to unknowingly kill his biological father and marry his mother and futher-more that same urge led him to discoverthe truth and for that his gouged out his eyes.
-Jason's lack of concern for women led to his downbringing when his ex-wife killed his children and wife.
How does this rambling in ancient greece fit in to this story? what we witness is a very similar thing, our tragic hero (the boy) is brought down by his own fatal flaw, that being the urge to make a quick buck.

One could argue that it is not the boy's fault but the seedy character from verse one. To those people i ask this: Would the boy still have agreed with Mr Verse 1 if the opportunity of the quick reward wasn't there?
Probably not.

4. My message.

Chances are alot of you are thinking i may have looked too deep into this one. truth is i might have, when i started this, i just let my fingers do the walking and let myself get carried away. However there i do have one belief that i would like to share that relates to this song:

The greeks were right, we all do have these fatal flaws and to become a better person, it is up to us to identify these flaws, always be aware and work on either ridding ourselves of them or not allowing
ourselves to get into situations where , like the "boy", they become our downfall.

pheeew! thats about it. comments welcome

Cheers /\.\etallic|\ for a great song!

Tool – The Patient Lyrics 19 years ago
This has gota be a favorite of mine. truly and inspirational and motivational number, and it has positive meaning to it, somthing rare in a tool song (the only other i can think of off the top of my head is H) I agree with toolsalesman when about 2 pages back he said "You are all right. Maynard won't tell you what a song means because it is supposed to be personal to you." thats what makes their music so great. when i go out looking for music, i go out looking for songs i can relate to, which is why cat stevens and gun n roses are still near at the top of my list. This song is The patient is great for me because well my life is sorta like that, my gf dumped me cos her plate was way too full with her dad dying of cancer and all nd she needed some space, so wenever i feel that urge to abuse her over the fone etc, out comes The Patient. The Album Lateralus is full of songs that are easy to relate too as well, definatly my fav tool album.

TOOL ARE COMING TO BIG DAY OUT NZ!

A Perfect Circle – Blue Lyrics 19 years ago
I think this songs about peer pressure, or rather the person nararting the song being pressured "ignore the smoke" refers to peer pressure being apllied to him and to me the repition imp;ies him trying to fight it. he knows it is a bad thing because he refers to it as smoke which one might argue as bad.
"i didnt want to know" implies that he didnt want to be there, know about, do it

"Call an optimist, she's turning blue
Such a lovely color for you" is him finnaly succuming to the pressure and acualy dong it (i think in this case it could be murder by strangling her but its just a metaphor) and getting that buzz from being popular etc. hence the happier sound in the chorus because he actualy feels good about it.

"Mistook their nods for an approval
Just ignore the smoke and smile" there is a change in tense here which which shows he is looking back on it, possibly explaining himself. too me this says he looked back to his peers for support which he thought they gave and dispite the vileness of his pressure he kept going because he thinks he has to like one might put on a smile for other people.

The next chorus indicates that he keeps going under the impression its what his peers want.

The last line has another change in tense from "didnt" to "dont" indicting its after the incident and he regrets doing it.

Comments anyone?

Tool – Viginti Tres Lyrics 19 years ago
"These are not commercials, they are not three-minute jingles, they're not as easy to get into — this is more like presenting a film." And while it's easy to smirk at his pretension, the parallel is instructive: CD's and films both rely on captive audiences; you've paid your money, so you'll sit still until the end. By contrast MP3's are more like television shows than films: they have to keep you entertained, or you'll click over to something else. If the last track on "10,000 Days" — it's called "Viginti Tres," and it's essentially five minutes of digital groans and sighs" -Maynard
Thats outa the new york times, just a little more food for those thinking machines we like to call brains,

Thirdeye wide, have u considered using garageband? that might do the trick, im not much of a mac fan but it might just work

Sorry egb but im gonna have 2 have argue with that 1, do u think realy think that its a coincidence that these 3 pieces realy fit together so nicely, not only with the track timing but the lyrics fitting together so nicely at the end...
to me it just seems way to close to simply be an accident. im sure severinn would agree, btw severrin that was really a stroke of genius figuring this out. im starting to think WINGS for marie is a more and more appropriate name for this song when you think about those wing like noises at the start of viginti tres...

hey egb lol did u read the lyrics to this song lately? :)
and despite my critisisms i still think 10000 days is a great album. nd im more "bummed" about the straightforwardness of the album (which after reading about the whole Vigiti Tres/wings/10000 days thing i may have to take back anyway) then the lack of anger, lack of anger dosent bother me, simply stating a fact, i mean on my playlist at the moment is alot of pink floyd would you believe it?

Is it just me or is this songvery straighforward for a tool song? then again the whole album is starting to look more and more straightforward...
yea its most certainly a question of what the hellare we doin still surviving, with a bit of a sideswipe at religion.
yea that bit at 6:01 is kinda wierd, its almost as though they cut a bit out or somthing. then again, im not a professional mixer or anything so what do i know?
And sorry guys but trexor, if ure still following this thred, i sorta agree with you. 10000 days isnt tool's best piece of work in my opinion.the meanings of the songs arent as hidden as they are in other songs, like H or well, lateralus i guess, then again you look at hooker with a penis or stinkfist and there isnt much hiding there. and there nowhere near as angry either. which is a shame, i know its pretty much a tribute album to maynards mum and all, but still.

Well it could just be me but i could swear i could hear an aircraft engine at about 2:40 into the song, then again just after the that crazy voice and at about the 4 minute mark.

If its not just me then could it possibly be somekind of reinforcement of the whole "wings" idea, then again it could just be tool with their deliberate randomness.
