To people who dislike Andrew W.K. and call him talentless, consider this: Andrew is an accomplished and incredible pianist (his virtuosity was recently the subject of an entire episode of NPR's syndicated series "All Things Considered"), as well as an awesome composer, best evidenced by the fact that he writes EVERY PART of EVERY SONG entirely on his own. He's a deeply philosophical person, although most people in mainstream society can't with the fact that some people don't showcase their intelligence in some crazy-ass way, or that they don't demonstrate what is, to them, a tangible manifestation of intellect, and he refuses to act like he has something to prove. It's not in his nature to stand up and say, "Okay, I read _____ and I am going to say something really smart and wordy now." The guy who tried to insult another dude on this board with a bunch of bullshit words that he arranged poorly is an ass and will not be named, because he's an embarassment to every literate human being on the planet. And by will not be named, I mean emochris. Look, if you can't lighten up and just enjoy the guy for being a great, energetic, passionate rockstar, then I'm sorry. Maybe nice, upbeat people aren't your sort of thing. Maybe you are an asshole. Yeah, come to think, you most definitely are. Get over yourself and enjoy the music. The sounds are fun as hell, the songs are incredibly well-written, and he gets a riot going faster than an art teacher who shows off his Mapplethorpe prints to the class. Most people won't get it, probably, but those same people are psuedo-intellectual dicks who need to get laid, lay back and seriously, honestly, just party. And I don't mean the nauseatingly self-destructive high-school "get fucked up" mentality of partying, I mean existential partying, where conciousness is elevated to the point of worship via comraderie and pure energy. That's what Andrew's preaching, and you better get used to it, because he's taking over the world. P.S. If you still think he's a dumbass, check out footage of his speaking engagements on YouTube. | I have a feeling that this song is a reference to JT Leroy, actually. Jamie supposedly knew that Leroy was a fake long before it was unraveled, and the song could possibly be about that. This is just something I heard, though. I almost sort of doubt it's true. | |

| I really love the way that this song sounds. I've only heard it live, but it reminds me of a Harmony Korine film, just in its structure and the way it moves and the tones and sounds in it, and I'm huge Korine fan. It's obviously about a boy whose confronting his father, though. The lines, "I can rip off my own tights, I can humiliate myself to your face, I can weep through my own midnights" are just incredibly affecting for me for some reason. Also, Caralee sings it, which, even though I love Jamie, was a great move for this particular song. I really think they should start singing together, though... wonder why they never do that. | |
