The Smiths – You Just Haven't Earned It Yet, Baby Lyrics 17 years ago
gets me through rough times, this one... and yes, the smiths are very pretty

kirsty maccoll's cover of this song must be one of the best smiths covers in existence.

Kirsty MacColl – You Just Haven't Earned It Yet Baby Lyrics 17 years ago
I disagree, FilibusterMan. This is a cover of a The Smiths song, and as far as I can remember, "You Just haven't earned it yet, baby" was bespoken by one of Morrissey's superiors to him. Morrissey doesn't have great deal of respect for his superiors.

"You just havent earned it yet" is a type of excuse given to you when you try hard, and fail, as a sort of logical explanation for your failure; akin to "well you must be doing something wrong".

This song is also sung in retrospective from the perspective of a successful artist (today i am rembering the time), to show how wrong their bosses were in telling them that they didn't deserve success.

Blur – Charmless Man Lyrics 17 years ago
It's quite obviously about Brett... if you listen to the song sung live, Damon sings: "and HE goes: nanananana...", which is a perfect imitation of how Brett Andersen usually sings.

The Smiths – Paint a Vulgar Picture Lyrics 17 years ago
What I love most about this song is how it takes a sad theme, a sad situation, and makes a beautiful and uplifting song. You see the same in There Is A Light. This meta-song illustrates how music lifts you up, how you "dance your legs down to the knees", even as "me and my true love wil never meet again".

Franz Ferdinand – This Fire Lyrics 18 years ago
There is one point in the video where he looks like Alex from "A Clockwork Orange"

Franz Ferdinand – What You Waiting For? Lyrics 18 years ago
so? the song rules anyway. I love the way Alex booms "you're still a super-hot FEMALE" in that really threatening voice.

Morrissey – You're The One For Me, Fatty Lyrics 18 years ago
also, i really don't think this has anything to do with "some girls are bigger than others". "Some girls" is about girls with big knockers, which is much more plausible for Morrissey to just have discovered.

Also, from a live performance of "Some girls":

on the shop floor, there's a calendar
as obvious as snow
as if we didn't know

which hints at porno magazines, which contains girls with... you guessed it.

Morrissey – You're The One For Me, Fatty Lyrics 18 years ago
I don't really understand it. Is he making fun of fat people? He has before (William, it was really nothing, Dagenam Dave), and characterised troubled people in his songs as being "skinny" (Shakespeare's sister), and self-absorbent people as being fat (How can you stay with a fat girl who says... I don't dream about anyone, except myself). I'm sorry I can't think of more examples, but there are many of them. So it seems like in this song he is sort of giving up his search for the perfect person, and chosing the "fat girl" from William it was really nothing.

The Smiths – Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others Lyrics 18 years ago
I really don't think this is about obesity anymore, but about breast size. During live performances he often sings:

on the shop floor, there's a calendar
as obvious as snow
as if we didn't know

Girls with big knockers in calendars?

Morrissey – Sweetie Pie Lyrics 18 years ago
I don't know quite what to say.. it seems like he is going in a new direction, which isn't altogether bad. Ballad-direction. Although this is only one song. Reminds me of "I Know It's Gonna Happen Someday". Which was just one song too.

Morrissey – Alsatian Cousin Lyrics 19 years ago
this is about teacher romance. I mean, leather elbows, Friday in the forcourt (when the students go home), desk... and it's funny, because you don't usually think about two teachers at a school as a very romantic setting, but Morrissey makes it so, especially through his (voyeuristic) jealousy/amusement.

Lily Allen – Take What You Take Lyrics 19 years ago
I think the lyrics are pretty self-evident. It talks about cliches, and how wisdoms should be born.

Morrissey – Mexico Lyrics 19 years ago
It's a rather trite topic, but I suppose that isn't his fault. However, he does pen it quite eloquently.

The Smiths – Suffer Little Children Lyrics 19 years ago
This is from The Decay of Lying, Morrissey's favourite Wilde story:

"One of the greatest tragedies of my life is the death of Lucien de Rubempré. It is a grief from which I have never been able completely to rid myself. It haunts me in my moments of pleasure. I remember it when I laugh. "

Morrissey – Michael's Bones Lyrics 19 years ago
this song seems to be about suicide, and all the taboos surrounding it. "you are too brave" is the glorification of suicide, while "oh look what he's done" is the very opposite. Don't understand the policeman bit. Seems like Michael, unkissed and luckless, drowns himself

The Smiths – Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others Lyrics 19 years ago
People say that this song is obvious and self-explanatory. So I thought, some girls are fatter than others. But the idea that it's about breast-size makes more sense, with "there is but one concern". So, what is the "obvious" answer?

Morrissey – At Amber Lyrics 19 years ago
This could be compared with November Spawned a Monster. Except here the invalid person has a more active role - where Morrissey distances himself from the invalid in NSaM and shows us one view, here the invalid confronts Morrissey... heavy irony.

The Smiths – I Won't Share You Lyrics 19 years ago
I haven't bothered reading the whole part about Marr and his wife.

To me, it speaks about someone you can't have, and the sad and ironic "I won't share you", as if you actually had a say... Life tends to come and go means two things to me. 1: I may not love you forever, and 2: you may love me someday. I'll see you somewhere, I'll see you sometime, seems so appropriate

The Smiths – Vicar in a Tutu Lyrics 19 years ago

Morrissey – Our Frank Lyrics 19 years ago
I have to agree that he's talking to himself. I think that I can see why Kill Uncle was so badly received, but coincidentially, this is the song I am most able to recognize myself in. From the chorus of the end, it's obvious (to me) that he's feeling despair at NEVER BEING ABLE TO STOP THINKING about "deep and meaningful" things, that don't help him, and don't seem to mean anything either...
