I think this song has two explanations, the literal explanations is that the guy is extremely sorry for what he had done in the past to this girl. He wants to change his ways to make him a better person as her being the motivation. The second explanation is from the music video that he feels remorse for using the girl as a distraction as he couldn't see whether she was initially hit or not....
