The Smashing Pumpkins – Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness Lyrics 18 years ago
This is great - it also plays well right before Lynyrd Skynyrd's 'Free Bird'. Try it some time.

werumm, thank you. I don't see why everyone is overanalysing this song.

Gnarls Barkley – Crazy Lyrics 18 years ago
It's funny to read how people are calling this a classic or the best song of the century. Will you even remember it in 5 years? I doubt it. Definitely better than most pop music, but that's not saying much.

It could also be about time.

Bob Dylan – Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window? Lyrics 18 years ago
I felt that it was to a woman who is in a relationship in which she feels neglected, and Dylan is exploiting her vulnerability.

The Raconteurs – Steady, As She Goes Lyrics 18 years ago
I agree, this is good but overhyped.

I don't think it's about a fear of commitment in general, but making the wrong commitments.

I think the song is about how so many people get married for all the wrong reasons, namely the pressure from family and friends to get married, have kids, settle down, buy a house, etc. and how this person realizes where this road leads down and knows that it will not give them happiness, but rather a sense of disappointment. Thus, you need to look at what are the reasons behind making a commitment, and the singer is remarking how unfortunate it is that many people make such decisions for all the wrong reasons.

But that's just me.

Jim Croce – New York's Not My Home Lyrics 18 years ago
This song is so true. Everyone says they want to live in the big city, but no one seems to be happy there. Esp. NYC.

Jim Croce – I Got A Name Lyrics 18 years ago
Agree with montyosis. This song sounds like it could be Johnny Appleseed's theme song.

Jim Croce – Bad, Bad Leroy Brown Lyrics 18 years ago
Great song. It still gets played on the Vegas classic rock station nearly daily.

Bruce Springsteen – Hungry Heart Lyrics 18 years ago
One of my favorite SPringsteen songs. It's not just about being selfish, but also about making bad decisions.

This is a great song. I've thought of at least three interpretations of this song, but not sure about its meaning.

She's hot. This song is better than most hip-hop songs.

Jane's Addiction – Been Caught Stealing Lyrics 18 years ago
This song is obviously about stealing, but the thing that makes it great is the 'fuck you if you don't like me' attitude. That's what makes this great rock and roll.

Peter Gabriel – Biko Lyrics 18 years ago
Great song, too many more people don't know his story. MLK is more famous simply because his family and the NAACP keeps promoting his legacy, but I always admired Biko more.

Great, great song. If only more rap songs had depth like this song.

Aerosmith – Janie's Got A Gun Lyrics 18 years ago
A bit overplayed on the radio, but great nonetheless. It definitely is about child abuse, rape, but that's only the half of it. It's also about society pretending it doesn't happen, or feeling awkward about the situation, and then it blows up in their face. You hear in the news about some kid who kills his/her parents, and you don't know if the kid is a monster, or it was a 'Janie' situation. This is the kid's point of view, and now Janie is scared and running, and doesn't know who to turn to.

Pink Floyd – Bring the Boys Back Home Lyrics 18 years ago
why the hell can't we edit our posts? Anyways, I don't think a literal interpretation of this song is wrong, it's just that the authors intended for this song to say more than what is at the surface.

Pink Floyd – Bring the Boys Back Home Lyrics 18 years ago
Exerpt from a 1979 Roger Waters interview:

Waters: "...and that snaps him back to then and it precedes, what is for me anyway, is the central song on the whole album 'Bring the Boys Back Home' "

Interviewer (T. Vance): "Why?"

Waters: "Well, because it's partly about not letting people go off and be killed in wars, but it's also partly about not allowing rock and roll, or making cars or selling soap or getting involved in biological research or anything that anybody might do, not letting that become such an important and "jolly boys game" that it becomes more important than friends, wives, children, other people."

This is not my interpretation of the song, but Waters'.

I know this may not be what the song was intended to be about, but to me this song always seemed what Faber would have said to Montag in Fahrenheit 451.

Pink Floyd – Bring the Boys Back Home Lyrics 18 years ago
It's more than literal, werumm. girfanman is right, this song is about the importance of family, society, relationships. He hates the war because it destroys these things needlessly, resulting in people creating walls around themselves. Not just wars, but also meaningless jobs, etc.

Pink Floyd – Another Brick in the Wall, Pt. 1 Lyrics 18 years ago
Leigh21, I like your post. Didn't Waters say that his wife is the only thing that kept him from becoming completely enclosed in his own wall and going over the edge? Thought I'd heard that. This is definitely the best of the brick in the wall trio.

Scorpions – Wind Of Change Lyrics 18 years ago
I don't see what's wrong with interpreting this song as something other than the Berlin Wall's fall, i.e. the WWII reference.

At its broadest interpretation, it's about the winds of change, and how larger world events can affect individuals' outlook on life, the future, etc. But yeah, I wasn't around in Vietnam or WWII, so the fall of the USSR was one of the big events of my childhood.

submissions
Nirvana – All Apologies Lyrics 18 years ago
I feel the song is a satirical attack against people who want us to conform to what they want us to be. It's along the lines of Frances Farmer. I think the words 'all apologies' are a joke, and if you replace them with 'no apologies' you get his real message.

The line 'all in all is who we are' is a stand for being who you are, no apologies.

Live – Heaven Lyrics 18 years ago
He's spiritual (believes in God), not religious. Actually this is a satirical attack on religious believers who depend on preachers/clerics to give them religion. Rather, he believes of his own volition, by what he feels from within, which is reinforced by the beauty around him, such as sunsets and his daughter. Also, he separates himself from the atheist by saying that he doesn't require proof, his belief comes from within.

Gin Blossoms – Hey Jealousy Lyrics 18 years ago
When I first heard this song, I was in middle school. I always assumed it was about a guy and girl who were friends in their teens, but he blew his chance with her by never expressing deeper feelings. Years later, he regrets it, and the one thing he couldn't start was either the relationship or telling her the truth.

Johnny Cash – Man in Black Lyrics 18 years ago
This song is not anti-christian, but it is against the religious establishments which manipulate people. Thus, the 'And, I wear it for the thousands who have died, Believen' that the Lord was on their side' Although the Man in Black became religious, he never believed in blindly following religious leaders.

We need a new man in black.

Otis Redding – (Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay Lyrics 18 years ago
I heard he made four different versions, as he was continually trying to polish this song. It's definitely not a happy song. It's a very dark song, as dark as anything by Nirvana or such. It's about how changing your external, physical surroundings don't change who you are inside, and this song is about someone who's not happy about who he is. Disappointed, beaten down by life, he sounds resigned.

Guns N' Roses – Civil War Lyrics 18 years ago
I think it's a great reflection on human nature. We all know wars are bad, but we as a species cannot seem to escape them: 'the way we we've always done before'

The line 'history hides the lies of our civil wars' is amazing. It's the two faces of war hawks, to first destroy and then rationalize/minimize the consequences.

The line 'human grocery store' is one of the most vivid I've seen in any song or poem ever.

One of the best sociopolitical songs ever. Period.
