Frankly, to me this song is the most obvious song by System. I am surprised by how much controversy there is. TBH I don't know where the alien boy from the video fits in, but as for the song here is what I always thought: Life is a waterfall, We're one in the river, And one again after the fall. (an obvious and beautiful metaphor of life. Before we are born we are all the same and united, we are all made and born the same way. Then our life is a waterfall, as far as we are concerned it gets very fast and tumultuous. Humanity gets divided into many droplets interacting with each other in many strange ways. Compared to the age of the Earth this "fall" lasts only a moment. Then we die, and in death we are again united in the river) Swimming through the void We hear the word, We lost ourselves, But we find it all? (this is the state after death or befor birth. We are in swimming in "the river" and we hear the "word" which I think is supposed to represent being finally able to interact with the divine (whatever it is). In death we loose ourselves but find "all" - enlightment. The ? mark - if it's indeed supposed to be there - would make it a doubtful statement, but doesn't change the sense of it.) Cause we are the ones that want to play, Always want to go, But you never want to stay, (this speaks of human nature, we always want to move on, we are never satisfied with what you get when you reach your next goal. Then you feel the need to "go" again, you don't want to "stay" in the place where you wanted to get to just yesterday) And we are the ones that want to chose, Always want to play, But you never want to lose. (self explanatory really - people want control, people want to participate in everything but are often afraid of failure. The last two stanzas line up some common failures in man's life, like chasing ghosts, petty fears etc.) Aerials, in the sky, When you lose small mind, You free your life. Aerials, so up high, When you free your eyes, Eternal prize. (we are "aerials" i.e. something more than just flesh, we need to rise above our small minds and limited senses to gain enlightment in life). In the video from lowlands (part 4 - see you tube) this is played just after Science and in a short interlude S. speaks about how science failed to explain the world and that we have no time to reflect on the world, then this is played. And if Daron said this song was about nothing - well just read the first part - it is about nothing (the void etc.) ;) JMHO. |

I seem to be in minority here, but I never thought this song to be about "false love" or "hate" or anything like that. It might be because of my personal experiences. I think it's like if you were doing something (anything, even singing this) and thinking about the person you loved the most, the person you are no longer with, in this case probably because of your own fault (one _I_'ve left). Kind of "wish you were here" sentiment. Whatever you do "goes out to the one you love" in the sense that you wish this person was here with you participating in whatever you are doing (in other words "this one" doesn't have to mean the song, it could be anything). To me this song is about obsessive love. And the "prop" is not the person, it's whatever you fill your time with to try to forget about the one you love, the one you can't be with. The variation at the end just states that the prop, whatever it was, has occupied some of his time, but the feeling hasn't changed. And "Fire...!!!" to me represents the torment of being in this position of being able to do nothing but miss what you had and what is now gone. It does almost feel like burning from inside. Especially the way MS sings this song in the acoustic version. I don't think it's full of hate, more like extreme pain. I wouldn't want it on my wedding that's for sure, but on the other hand I think love is completely real in this one, even too real. It's an obsession. Just my take on this. |
