| So I think we've more or less established that this song revolves around one of John's affairs while still married to Cynthia. From my analysis of the last verse, I think the most revealing line is "This bird has flown." To be metaphorical, I would say the bird is the relationship, and its flight was the essence of its existence. Having flown, it has seen from great heights the awe-inspiring landscapes and natural beauties of this world--all from a seemingly safe and isolated position. But upon landing, the bird terminates its existence under the weight of a gravitational force it can no longer defy; its essence disintegrating into the organic elements that initially composed it. And, who knows? maybe the bird landed on some indistinct tree in Norway which concurrently fell victim to a forest fire. | |

| In a literary sense, this song reminds me of Dante's "Inferno." Especially with the opening line, "I've been waiting for a guide to come and take me by the hand." With the modernist imagery, though, (tenth floor, back stairs, cars...) Ian ties us into the picture. We can relate our distress and anxiety and admit that we've been waiting for our personal Virgo to come and take us by the hand. It's beautiful. I've got the spirit, lose the feeling. | |

I feel like this song is about having to leave someone because they grow apart. "You paint yourself white" may be about one partner realizing that he's not being himself, disguising his instincts and his desires in a pure, white form. "And fill up with noise" would suggest the inner-frustration at this identity crisis he's going through and he realizes that if he continues the relationship as is "there'll be something missing." So, eventually he leaves his girlfriend/lover to get in touch with his own personality, and once he finds something stable, however long that may be, he returns to his former lover. Except at this point, she's gone, moved on. "Now that you've found it, it's gone." And so his life has "gone off the rails." From that point on he lives his life in disbelief because he can't understand how everything could have gone so wrong. And he "can't get any big ideas" about reforging his relationship with her. "There not gonna happen." At this point he's completely undone, stripped to the core and with nothing left. Nude. |

I don't think the song was about Shannon wanting himself to change. I think that in Change, he tried to express his annoyance with people not accepting him and his habits (such as cocain). People are resistant to change and new ideas. When people tell you that a habit is destructive they automatically assume that it's not worth the pleasure. This song is about lauging at people held back with morals and their own restrictions. "And they'll say, 'hey look at him, i'll never live that way' but that's ok. they're just afraid of change." This song is also about keeping a positive attitude when life's realities create depression. "When life is hard, you have to change." |
