Great song, and it really must be because I dont like most of DM's stuff, but I love this one. I also think it beats the hell out of that song "ironic" song Alanis put out in the 90s. Poor Alanis--Dave really put her to shame with this one. |

Yes, Cortes did the 'hard thing' and burned his ships so his mutinious men had no other choice but to follow him on his trail of conquest. But IMO he was just doing what he had to do--it was rough times. Also, the Aztecs were pretty brutal themselves (cutting the heart out of a live person? Sounds pretty ruthless to me). Historical inaccuracies aside, its a great song--one of Neil's best. Shouldnt overanalyze anyway, just sit back and enjoy. :) |

The way I heard it, He wrote the song after finding all the letters his old girlfriend wrote him, thus the spacey sounding lyrics--theyre a comp of all the letters...or it could be drugs, hahaha. wherever he got the inspiration, it works like a charm; great underrated song! |
