Bright Eyes – Lime Tree Lyrics 16 years ago
This song is clearly about abortion. I've read most of the posts and no one has mentioned the reference to a period in the last verse:

"So I just won't be late
The window closes, shocks roll over in a tidal wave
And all the color drains out of the frame"

Neil Young – It's A Dream Lyrics 17 years ago
The verses are just snapshots in time, which to the speaker are like dreams... Just as dreams escape us when we awake, so do our memories as we age. And when we die, they no longer have anywhere to stay.

Bob Dylan – Last Thoughts on Woody Guthrie Lyrics 17 years ago
EFFORT - when i said "possibly the end of your life" i was referring to woody,, not dylan. But i think you make a good point with that; you should always be searching for meaning, it is always changing... i think dylan made this evident in his career; just when he seemed to have found a way to go about his life in general, he changed completely. Your life will never be static, and nothing else should be.

Jack Johnson – Times Like These Lyrics 17 years ago
when he said it was about the flags on cars he meant that everyone in America, especially after 9/11 has been a little bit selfish. It is understandable to want God to Bless America after something like that, but God has blessed America alot more than most countries around the world. Believe it or not there have been alot worse things that have happened. It is important to see everyone as an equal, their problems are as relevant as yours.

Neil Young – Don't Let It Bring You Down Lyrics 17 years ago
when i said it happens every day i meant that people die every day...something youve built will burn, and literally night will fall to day. But day will come back, someone new will be born, a new castle will be built.

Neil Young – Don't Let It Bring You Down Lyrics 17 years ago
I think you might be overthinking it a little bit. When I first heard the song i was amazed at the simply lines that present vivid imagery with few words. The basic idea of this song is the classic motif of life-death; night-day; light-darkness. The chorus ties the simple images of the verses together by saying; "YES; each life is the most important thing to ever happen, but get over it, it happens every day. The person "turning" is another life being born, or just someone who sees their life for what it is.
This is one of Neil Young's best, and definitely exemplifies his style when it comes to songwriting.

Bob Dylan – Dear Landlord Lyrics 17 years ago
I've changed my position on this song slightly... I read the poem "The Landlady" by Margaret Atwood, which describes the physical self as the landlady. The poem and this song came out at almost the same time, and im not sure whether Dylan was inspired by Atwood, or the other way around.
I believe Dylan is talking to his physical body rather than god. I think it still revolves around his motorcycle acciddent, and in this context i think the meaning of each line practically jumps of the page.

Also, if your wondering what makes this song so good/different musically, you should definitely check out this article:

Bob Dylan – Quinn the Eskimo (Mighty Quinn) Lyrics 17 years ago
dylan was born a jew... but wrote many songs that had christian references early in his career, and had a bunch of christian albums in the late 70s, 80s. I do think this song could be about Jesus, or just about Quin the eskimo.

Yesterday's just a memory

Bob Dylan – Dear Landlord Lyrics 18 years ago
John Wesley Harding is an amazing album, the songs have a mysterious quality to them and the whole concept of the album is so different from many of Dylan's works.

As Cavern said, this song should be more famous. The lyrics are so simple, but have as much meaning as other, more complicated Dylan songs. I also think this song has a lot to do with his near fatal motorcycle accident; it seems as if he's begging for his life...

Dear landlord
Please don't dismiss my case
I'm not about to argue
I'm not about to move to no other place
Now, each of us has his own special gift
And you know this was meant to be true
And if you don't underestimate me
I won't underestimate you.

i think bob dylan is an excellent musician, though he is a better poet. His style seems harsh to people who are accustomed to radio pop, and as far as im concerned those people should not be listening to Dylan anyways. My friends listen to emo and rap, and they can't understand Bob Dylan, and i think it's better that way. Bob Dylan should not be exploited

He is not trapped in this town, this town is his life. This about a place where he feels at home, and where he grew up.

"All my changes were there."

a perfect line... shows that this is where Neil Young became Neil Young.

"The chains are locked
and tied across the door,"

Again showing the profound impact this place had on him finding an identity which cannot be changed

"Blue, blue windows behind the stars"

possibilities.

Neil Young – Heart Of Gold Lyrics 18 years ago
i think this is him searching for meaning in his life...

for example

"I've been to Hollywood
I've been to Redwood"

Hollywood represents fame, and everything unnatural or fake in the world. And i believe Redwood is a national park in California, which would represent peaceful, natural world. He has looked for meaning in fame, in nature, and is still unsure of his purpose

I think this song is about someone who isnt really a bad person leading a life of crime. This person lives outside of society, but Neil is saying that in a way he was just like this person, and eventually they will find what they need to do with their life. Eventually he will discover what is really important and his life will change..

El Che is the only one making sense so far. To sum it up, religion takes away the indivduality of people, in eden everyone is equal, and there is always a limit because God is all-knowing. I think Bob Dylan is trying to say that living for religion is the wrong way to go about things. You should live life for life, be yourself; don't let groups tell you how to think and how to spend your life. Ultimately, the only thing that makes life worth living is death, that way we don't take life for granted (we still do most of the time). If you will never die, all of your sins will be erased, and all of your life accomplishments amount to nothing compared to your worhsip, then why bother? i'l kill myself now so i can go to paradise (that's what extremist muslims are saying before they walk into a building with a bomb strapped to their chest)

"I'm only passing through"
I believe this is a reference to Thornton Wilder's play "Our Town". The play has a lot to do with the realisation of life while you are living it, and whether or not people are capable of doing this. We are all just passing through, and we will all be gone.

Great song, lots of references to what life is really about.
Also, can anyone tell me what life's about?

Neil Young – Southern Man Lyrics 18 years ago
first off neil young is not a yankee he is Canadian. Second of all the song is about racism in general, not just in the south. It uses the South as an example because racism occuring there at the time was much more obvious than in other parts of the US. Also, the song was mostly going to be heard in the US, and thus used an example that Americans can relate to. It is not saying that all southerners are racist or that they are the only ones who are racist. It would be a pretty rediculour hippocrtical song if it did. Neil Young is brilliant and was writing to let people know that this was still going on. Obviously the song is not as simple as some of you say it is. Stop fighting about such meaningless shit.

N0 C0DE 79; the song is not pointing out that the USA is the greatest nation on earth. It is saying quite the opposite, Neil young is saying that many people like you are under the illusion that it is.

Probably the catchiest song of all time, not great lyrically though. I keep it on my ipod anyways.

p.s. the Beatles were definitely the most popular band of all time; but not necessarily the best. Many of their songs were strictly written for commercial success. . . is J-Lo really a more talented musician/artist than Conor Oberst? definitely not. (I'm not saying the beatles were not talented because they knew how to make music that a lot of people could listen to)... but it all depends on how u measure success
