Vampire Weekend – Harmony Hall Lyrics 6 years ago
"We took a vow in summertime
Now we find ourselves in late December
I believe that New Year's Eve
Will be the perfect time
For their great surrender

To me, this is someone thinking about a planned revolution of sorts. He's reflecting on when the plans for this revolution were first hatched (in summertime, either literally or metaphorically) and how the time has come to implement their plan and face the harsh reality of it (in the cold hard months of winter) which will coincide with the dawning of the new year (a revolution of it's own) The lyrics suggest that their is an internal conflict here: Ideology vs practical reality.

But they don't remember
Anger wants a voice
Voices wanna sing
Singers harmonize
Till they can't hear anything
Thought that I was free
From all that questioning
But every time a problem ends
Another one begins

Seems to me that he's suggesting that those ideologues that truly wanto see their revolution come about fail to remember that people are not inherently ideological. Although "anger wants a voice", what most voices want to do is sing, and not disturb the degree of harmony that exists, regardless of whether or not it fits the ideology. The person describing these things is still tied to the ideology and those involved, but he'd rather just be free of their rules and inquisitions as to whether or not he's been operating for the cause of the revolution.

And the stone walls of Harmony Hall bear witness
Anybody with a worried mind can never forgive the sight
Of wicked snakes inside a place you thought was dignified
I don't wanna live like this, but I don't wanna die
(Ooh ooh ooh ooh)
I don't wanna live like this, but I don't wanna die

This suggests that the Government and/or Universities have become a breeding ground for ideologues. These are institutions that were built by ethical people that knew the value of morality and education and the places that used to place the highest value upon challenging and rigorous debate, have become a den for vipers. Ideologically-driven professors, politicians and bureaucrats have debased the esteem of places of higher learning and the sanctity of self-reflective government.

Within the halls of power lies
A nervous heart that beats
Like a Young Pretender's
Beneath these velvet gloves I hide
The shameful crooked hands
Of a money lender
'Cause I still remember

This suggests that he is a man in a position of power, but he hasn't earned that position in the same way that the generations that came before him did. He is a pretender to the throne, disguising his truly wicked and debased nature with softly-spoken words and political correctness. He is a puppet-master that cannot expose his true self because that would cause disillusionment in the view of the people that he is manipulating to his agenda.

The Avalanches – Because I'm Me Lyrics 8 years ago
The way I hear the lyrics to this song:

If she don't love me, what can I do?
Just put on my best pair of shoes
Because I, I'm me
Because she said, "He's the one. That Thriller charm"
Honey that's "
I just want to know
What's wrong with me?
Being in love with you

9th grade had the jingles off the swaggy rainbow jacket
Boss bling-glow, Bronx's only Django
Snap, he a garbage stuffer
That's where my props go
That's where my props went
See my percentage is a pennant to the planet
Knock it out the ball park, Frankie
I should not tie this tie
To a better love, let the wings spread
It'll always come back, baby
Come back, shellac black, baby
A come back, flat black paint on a Chevy

If she don't love me, what can I do?
Just put on my best pair of shoes
Because I'm me
Because I, I'm me
Because I, I'm me
Because I'm me, I'm me

Never mind my tone when I told Pretty Tony
Listen to my tone, you ain't catchin' you a Tony
Award-winning walk when you running with a shottie
Why you running from us?
Why you messing with us?
We ain't got no guns, we just let the bears witness
The Grizzly, maybe Polar
You ain't ready, you ain't ready 'ready rolled up
Pulling a machete, cut the bamboo paper
And let's roll out baby
(roll out, Frankie)

I just want to know
What's wrong with me?

Broken Bells – The High Road Lyrics 10 years ago
This song is about the difficulty in peoples understanding of the the true "high road" and the consequences that follow. The "high road" is the morally upright, just, fair and equitable path but it is clouded by propaganda and indoctrination both at the local level (the neighborhood drug dealer) and at the level of the state (the government/military) Rather than judging what is truly moral by following their heart and embracing the cold-hard truth and growing from it, they allowed negative feelings (the feeling of loss, pain, hatred, envy, greed, etc.) to guide them into bad situations that they can't get themselves out of (i.e. drug addiction and military service for the interests of a corrupt government) The end result in both accounts presented in this song is suicide (she/he curls her/his lips on a barrel) The songwriter is observing this from both his own position and from the position of the pusher (i.e. the drug dealer/military recruiter/propagandist) "come on and get the minimum" Once you have a taste for the drug, you're hooked and once you have signed-up for the military, it's extremely difficult to get out of should you change your mind (you need to serve the minimum before they release you) It explicitly says "Come on and get the minimum, before you open up your eyes.
This army has so many heads to analyze. Come on and get your overdose. Collect it at the borderline. They want it up in your head." This is the songwriter's take on how indoctrination and propaganda is used by those in positions of power (the drug dealer/military industrial complex) to exploit impressionable youth and those in bad situations/broken homes to recruit them into situations that they wouldn't naturally find themselves in before they "open up their eyes" to see how they are being manipulated into a bad situation. You need only to look at the high suicide rates/clinical depression/prescription psychotropic drug use of veterans and that of heavy drug users to know how they have been led astray but the damage is done. This is done by design. "Because they know and so do I, the high road is hard to find" The powers that be exploit this fact to manipulate the mentally naive to do their bidding. The songwriter is melancholic about this, as if he's detached from these realities and resigned to the fact that these people are just casualties to their own mistake in misplacing their trust.

Broken Bells – The High Road Lyrics 10 years ago
Corrected lyrics:

We're bound to wait all night
She's bound to run amok
Invested enough in it anyhow
To each his own
The garden is sorting out
She curls her lips on a barrel
I don't know if you're dead or not
if you're anyone

Come on and get the minimum
Before you open up your eyes
This army has so many heads
To analyze
Come on and get your overdose
Collect it at the borderline
They want to get up in your head

[Chorus]
Cause they know, and so do I
The high road is hard to find
A detour in your new life
Tell all of your friends goodbye

The dawn to end all nights
That's all he hoped it was
A break from the warfare in your house
To each his own
The soldier is bailing out
He curled his lips on a barrel
And I don't know if the dead can talk
To anyone

Come on and get the minimum
Before you open up your eyes
This army has so many hands
Are you one of us?
Come on and get your overdose
Collect it at the borderline
They want to get up in your head

[Chorus]
Cause they know, and so do I
The high road is hard to find
A detour in your new life
Tell all of your friends goodbye

[Repeat x4]
It's too late to change your mind
You let loss be your guide

The Guess Who – Rain Dance Lyrics 12 years ago
I think this song is about doing whatever you feel like doing, regardless of whether or not it is perceived as something that is productive or benefits society. I think the key lyric is "changing just a few things, laughing while the bell rings on the door" While other people are pursuing their interests (in baking and astronomy...both valued skills in society) these two regular guys (the narrator and "John") are doing what interests them (i.e. shooting birds outside, probably smoking some pot and having a few beers and just having a good time) I think John is supposed to be the one asking the narrator "Don't you wanna rain dance with me?" As in, don't you wanna go out and get high in the park and have a laugh?...I'll bring the gun

To address all the confusion about the 'adobe' lyric.

He does indeed say "adobe slats" which refers to the adobe roof tiles (shingles) that are used on practically every home in Portugal...where Noah Lennox and his girls live (i.e. his wife and daughter)

Thunder And Roses – White Lace and Strange Lyrics 14 years ago
The lyrics above are quite off. Here are the right lyrics:

Thunder & Roses - White Lace and Strange

White whispers soft in the doorway
Hardly concealing a touch to me
Wanting to stay just for one day
Until the strange sensation that I feel when I see

White lace and strange
Liquid eyes looking through me
Conjuring a fantasy of love within her mind
White lace and strange
Liquid eyes looking through me
Burning in a factory of fear running all the time

Deep crimson lips calling to me
Feeling so eager and tasting so fine
Making sweet love through the morning
When its time, she must go
And once again I see

White lace and strange
Liquid eyes looking through me
Conjuring a fantasy of love within her mind
White lace and strange
Liquid eyes looking through me
Burning in a factory of fear running all the time

*Guitar solo*

White lace and strange
Liquid eyes looking through me
Conjuring a fantasy of love within her mind
White lace and strange
Liquid eyes looking through me
Burning in a factory of fear running all the time

Deep crimson lips calling to me
Feeling so eager and tasting so fine
Making sweet love through the morning
When its time, she must go
And once again I see

White lace and strange
Liquid eyes looking through me
Conjuring a fantasy of love within her mind
White lace and strange
Liquid eyes looking through me
Burning in a factory of fear running all the time
... All the time

she doesnt say "fantastic kids are romantic" or "fantastic into romantic" in that one part...its clear that the lyrics go: "Said you, you, you are fantastic and so romantic ... romantic and so fantastic"

The Mars Volta – Asilos Magdalena Lyrics 19 years ago
The problem with the literal translations above is that they leave out the conversational tone of the song...i think it goes more like this:

Ill I arrived
And to compose myself I wander aimlessly
Dont give me your 'obedience'
Or else I will show my wolf form (show you my body of mud)
Where the skin is weak
With a hunger that wont let me sing

In my life
The darkness maintains me
When I saw you in the rain
you promised me your blood
I will not stay

Since cast off this world
I hold a knife, my God, for you
How many times did you bite me?
And how many times did I leave?
I am no longer in love with your lies
In hell I sleep (Its hell I love)
Because hell is the only truth

*chorus*

Morning star
Samael, I'm coming for you
And if I am left with nothing (And if I am left without wings)
I will still die for you

The Mars Volta – Asilos Magdalena Lyrics 19 years ago
I think this song could quite possibly be from the perspective of Mary Magdalen...a woman in the bible who was the first witness to Jesus' resurrection (as the story goes) and it is debated that she was the wife of Jesus. Before following Jesus she was a prostitute who had 7 demons exorcised from her. The title of the song translates to Magdalen Asylum..which for over 150 years was an actual group of asylums for women operated by the Roman Catholic Church. Its formal goal was to rehabilitate prostitues. This info does nothing but create more possibilities...but I think its a song about Mary Magdalen being abandoned by Jesus ("and now that you left this world i carry a knife...") shes pissed off..and returning back to her diabolical roots...shes calling out for Samael (devil) to take her back. The last words of the song make sense this way..in that Mary Magdalen would in effect "live wingless" even tho shes dying for Jesus. Kind of ironic..

amazing song

From what I can piece together, this song seems to be coming from the perspective of an angel...who has lost faith in God and heaven..and is ready to join the ranks of the "fallen angels"..He mentions "living wingless"...I think he's trying to talk himself into abandoning God (and Jesus because of all the blood references)....this is a song with alot of influence from early christian folklore..mainly from the books of Enoch.

anybody ever heard of The Merry Pranksters??...They were this travelling band of acid users...apparently back in the 60's they tried to secretly get a group of cops stoned on LSD to blow their minds into orbit...cos cops are usually so tight assed and reserved..but the plan was busted before it happened...this might just be a nod to what might happen if a person who doesnt know that theyre tripping might never come down from it...if you just started tripping without knowing you took LSD wouldnt you??

Tool – Rosetta Stoned Lyrics 19 years ago
Its so totally a cop narrating this song...or maybe a military police type guy......some examples to prove my point:

"ten to 2 am and actually eating a peanut box and Krispy Kremes at my need-to-know post just outside Area 51" - Everyone knows the stereotype that cops eat donuts..and who else would be sitting around doing that at 2 in the morning?..so close to a top secret military base...

theres another line that says something about Birkenstocks..which leads people to question why a cop would be wearing Birkenstocks?....but i believe its actually Birkenstock..not the shoe..the last name...i think thats his partner..his last name is Birkenstock..the cop then goes onto say either: "then he yelled at me" or "threw me a weapon"...both things Birkenstock did...maybe...i dunno

and the line "I hope my partner here doesnt noticed that i pissed my fuckin pants" is so obvious...he's in law enforcement of some kind....

the only lyrics that really need certain parts deciphered are the first two verses...the rest is audibly clear

p.s. i only think he says "peanut box" because it sounds like he does..and later in the song he asks "and can anyone tell me why, all of a sudden the peanuts danced?"......some people heard something else that sounds way off tho...*shrug*

I think this song is all about possibility....it could possibly be about a cop who after eating a batch of LSD infused Krispy Kreme dounts has an acid trip and never really comes down...or maybe the cop is not high, but thinks theres no other explanation..and actually did contact this space being......i dont know for sure...but one thing i do know is that all the lyrics that have been posted here and everywhere on the net are off....in many cases way off....and i dont think you can dissect a song until you have the right lyrics....

Just pointing out that line people say is "Tony and Tenille say wanna jump rope and i say look!"...is wrong .......its actually:

"Toni Tenille, Sonny Bono, Charo had a nice set of lungs!"

....all of these names are people that were singers/artists from the 1960's and 70's
