| Regina Spektor – Bleeding Heart Lyrics | 8 years ago |

I see this as being totally autobiographical (the video confirms this, featuring old pics from Regina's childhood). She's in a bar reminiscing about the 'story' of her childhood- the 2nd person she refers to throughout the song is herself, either past or current. She begins as a loner throughout grade school, as an oddball/foreigner/introvert. She doesn't fit in, and discusses the pain of going through much of life fearful and regretful of social interactions. I perceive the chorus "never mind your bleeding heart" as a reminder of the constant repeated message from the 'normal' world that she should act fine and not worry about her anxiety, whilst ignoring the deeper problems. Our culture is catered to extroverts, and rarely deals with the issues of loneliness or depression; for example Disney movies are mostly happy and bright- positivity is everything, put a smile on even if you don't mean it. The chorus taunts herself, and she is repeating the refrain to herself, because all she knows how to do is shut down those emotions and bury them inside. The 3rd verse appears to suggest that now that she's grown up she's overcome the pain/shortcomings from her past, and she pity's someone she sees in a situation like she used to be. But the last line shows how she never really fixed any of her former problems, "Cause you won the war so it's not your turn / But everything inside still burns." In reality, that pain from her past manifests itself in her current life. The outro shows how she has channeled the pain through patience, effort, and dreaming; she has used her former shortcomings to become a hugely successful musician/poet. Yet each line suggests the pain she still goes through as part of this process, with constant doubts and sadness. She is trying to use the art form to fix her bleeding heart, but the pain subsists. So with the final line she reiterates that she'll keep ignoring it. "How long must I wait till you learn that it's not too late How long must I cry till you know that you really tried How long must I try till you learn that dreaming's hard How long must I dream till you heal your bleeding heart Never mind your bleeding heart" This also suggests the dilemma that maybe it's best to forget about her bleeding heart. Or maybe it's just that she's come to terms with it in the end, and as she's used it to create something good while overcoming the major challenges she faced as a child (that is more optimistic, but I think it's a stretch to say that that's reflected in the lyrics). So that's a really depressing take, and I think the song sounds so bright and happy as a jarring irony representing the bitter-sweet reality of the fake happiness that results in constantly pushing down your painful emotions. |

| They totally copied the idea of this song from South Park! As in the episode "My Future Self 'n' Me." | |

It obviously is about sex. But when she says its not about sex, she means that she is using it as a metaphor for her control over publicity/the music industry (or something like that). There really couldn't be much more obviously sexual lyrics without being blatantly explicit. "Don't pull your pants before I go down," "Like a shotgun needs an outcome," "I'm your prostitute, you gon' get some" come on... |

I know I'm like 7 years late, but... glockenspiel?!?! What are you hearing in this song that sounds like a glockenspiel? There is no percussion in this song at all. I think the only instrumentation is an accordion, electric guitar, and acoustic guitar or maybe a different kind of guitar like a banjo or mandolin. There's lots of mallet percussion like glockenspiel and vibraphone in the other songs of the album, maybe that's what you were referring to? |

My interpretation of the correct lyrics: Tricking through the morning The tramp with the trampoline under his arm Shifts past your whiskers So spark is a charm with the barking alarm Weighs coil 'til the corner is turned And the bicycle wheels, all struggle to move round In your muddy mind blatantly cape town And will intertwine in co-operative time Shall we sit on the springs 'til the mung goes dry All the pretty visitors came and waved their arms and cast the shadow of a snake pit on the wall, All the pretty visitors came and waved their arms and cast the shadow of a snake pit on the... What came first the chicken or the dickhead? Split sleep reeps rewards from ill fitting thoughts A twilight force, she doesn't wanna walk Your legs start running and your leg gets caught Canopy 19 is perfectly placed for the reasonably frightening, Pulled from the after taste, you'll have to slip away I'm unhappy to say Behold as a crook in a hammock plays all the pretty visitors came and waved their arms and cast the shadow of a snake pit on the wall all the pretty visitors came and waved their arms and cast the shadow of a snake pit on the wall behold as a crook in a hammock plays cruelly with the bass of the scales, and fiddles with the feet on a balancing act gagged, bound and crafting a tale trailing wrapped in a gasp cruelly with the bass of the scales, and f*cking fiddles with the feet on a balancing act she was gagged, bound and crafting a tale trailing wrapped in a gasp all the pretty visitors came and waved their arms and cast the shadow of a snake pit on the wall all the pretty visitors came and waved their arms and cast the shadow of a snake pit on the wall The thing that was hardest to decipher was crafting vs. craft in (a tale). I chose crafting because it makes more grammatical sense, but by the way it sounds it could go either way. |

| I agree with lingeron, I think all the lyrics refer so some type of dark carnival atmosphere. It could refer to themselves being in a "balancing act" with all the critics or vicious fans or whatever waving their arms like snakes. | |

Wakinupbabies is spot on I think. I didn't really get this before but your explanation clears it up a lot. This is a definitely tragic and eerie tune. |

Unavoidable laws you fools; come on get it right. kipperjoe, please just get the lyrics from the CD insert. Jack is speaking about a general moral statement, which he then reflects and expands to different specific literal situations it applies to. This method allows the listener to further expand it to countless situations that he did not mention outright but metaphorically referred to. I believe that his main focus and motivation in writing this song was the war in Iraq as voltafan101 stated. Bush goes to war supposedly because Saddam Hussein had WMDs and somehow was connected to 9/11 (I have no idea how anyone could possibly have believed that he was as it was common knowledge in the rest of the world that he was not). The effect: After the invasion, all hell breaks loose as the conflict has evolved into a civil war . The only positive effect the the administration takes credit for is the ousting of Hussein. The cause: The administration and some Republicans now state that they don't regret it and they still would have entered Iraq because it got rid of an evil dictator. Currently the stated reason that we are still in Iraq is that if we leave the terrorists will follow us home (lol; I just can't see how that makes any sense at all, its completely ridiculous), and the situation will get far worse than it already is. Also, several literal situations this song presents can refer to the Iraqis getting blamed for the continuing bloodshed as they aren't "taking initiative" when we are the ones that got them into their mess (invented a contraption, caused a trainwreck, burnt down their houses, got pregnant (figuratively)) in the first place. I don't think there is one American (or Iraqi for that matter) who is not "brokenhearted," due to personal or general situations, at the immense number of deaths caused by this war. "The way you clean a wreck Is enough to give one pause." "A wreck" sounds a heck of a lot like Iraq. I thought he said Iraq the first few times I heard it, and its probably just a coincidence, but its possible he is enough of a genius to add that as a homonym for the comparison. |

I also just realized how much of a hypocrite i am for scandalizing our leader- giving in to human instincts. Then again, there should not be so many scandals, and I hope to be able to wake up and not be tired in my life (metaphor). Sorry for the triple post. |

I think I have found my new favorite song of all time. It is an amazing, emotional ode about the modern world and how the public falls asleep to the continuos maelstrom of the corperate, and corrupt political world that will end up with all the eyes of the world falling asleep (dying). Also, those in the world that don't fall asleep (don't act, act as robots) are tired and cannot act. The song also could have referred to global warming, as it could be the destruction of the world through the same means of industrialization, the corperate world, and stupid, corrupt, ignorant, decietful government (i.e. Bush; you freaking idiot, I hate you). I like the idea that the last line being cut off (vapori-) shows that the threat of world destruction or apocalypse is here as well as everywhere in the (all the eyes of the) world How do you wake someone up from inside a dream? This is such a good line, speaking to ignorant people, especially rich conservative Republicans (living in Texas). (I apoligize if I'm biased or offensive, but I feel that that is largly true) Also, if you don't like the new sound after having just bought or listened to the album, go listen to it five times over and you should feel differently. wasteofwebspace is a genius (if you skipped through his post because it was to long slap yourself and then go back and read it). By the way, what does P.P.B. mean? |
