| Emily Haines & the Soft Skeleton – Detective's Daughter Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
This song has its own weird meaning for me... but... it could be about the narrator's significant other, who cheated on her, or went another woman. The narrator ends up always comparing herself to this woman. "She'll always have a place in my mirror." But to me it is about my conscience, and someone in my consciousness haunting me... I am pretty sure that's what it is about for Emily. I also love how she re-wrote the lyrics of John Lennon's "Love." :) |

| Emily Haines & the Soft Skeleton – The Lottery Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
This song has many personal meanings for me that I am not going to get into.. however, I have gotten a lot of insights from these comments. I'm with Joey the most. I think "the lottery" is a metaphor for love, sometimes you just throw your dice in not knowing how it's going to work out, and you get disappointed often because how much of a chance is there? And why not just do the act (sex) of there's nothing to lose? I'm the type of person who lingers on things that don't work out and.. I just happen to find them the most beautiful. I do wish they would work out, of course. |

| Elliott Smith – A Distorted Reality Is Now a Necessity to Be Free Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| I love this song more for its lyrics than the actual song itself.. I think the statement is so true. A distorted reality IS a necessity, whether we all know it or not.. because, life is subjective. I distort my reality by thinking most people are not real, even though it's not true. I would certainly think of both drugs and self-harm as a way out, because they are releases. Reality can be torturous, or you have to distort it. the "people raking in on the world" part is about all those people who follow society and prop themselves for it.. "doll her up in virgin white" means, give her her innocence back, maker her whole again so she can be mine. he goes from this line to the "raking in on the world" part to go from fantasy to reality.. "shine on me baby 'cause it's raining, in my heart" just speaks of him being sad. i RELATE to Elliott. long live his music, for real | |
| Fiona Apple – Pale September Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| Pale september, I wore the time like a dress that year... life was a burden for her. This boy was a relief for her, yet at the same time, she was resentful because he experienced life so much lighter than she did.. "unaware of the depth upon which he coasts." yet the chorus is peaceful, she is finally at peace with herself when her armor is falling down, and she can finally give up the burden, and let herself be vulnerable, because she gets lost in her innocence... and he is lost within it all as well. | |
| Sonic Youth – Paper Cup Exit Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| I love the lyrics of this song, and the song itself. It's so poetic. | |
| Fiona Apple – The Child Is Gone Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| I love this song. I listen to it all the time. I think it's about losing your innocence (even figuratively, i listened to it when i was a virgin too..) just about losing that carefreeness. "Take the shade from the canvas and leave me the white..."... > I want to be free again | |
| Aimee Mann – It's Not Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
this song is so comforting. it is more comforting than any happy song could be.. she takes the most obvious-sounding phrase, that no one has taken thus far besides her... she makes it her own, and she makes it meaningful. no one else could think of this, even though it is so obvious. i actually feel like she's telling me about my life, saying ' you need to get on with your life, you need to be strong ' i love the sequence of a circuit to a movie screen to a car ride to a stop light.. to a kiss.. to getting lost in space that goes on forever. i don't think i've heard anything more profound in my life. i hope Aimee Mann keeps searching for the profound, because i love her. |

| PJ Harvey – Is This Desire? Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| you people are all stupid.. okay maybe your interpretations are right; but to me it's obviously about sexual desire, and how it gets one through the day sometimes.. but how it can be overpowering, and too much, and then, it's not enough: "is this desire enough?" she's asking this question, and asking you to think about it. does desire lift above? And it's more a question song than an answer song, she's using characters to make it vivid. | |
| Tori Amos – Spring Haze Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| this song is about sex and wanting to have sex, but having to wait til sunday.. that's all i have to say really. i love it. "drown" and "land" are sexual terms. | |
| Fiona Apple – Sullen Girl Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
This song is not about solely rape. It is not about feeling sullen, or sorry for yourself. Fiona Apple is someone of a lot of knowledge and depth, so I think the song has a bunch more to say than that, mainly in these lines: "it's calm under the waves, in the blue of my oblivion." The waves are a symbol for emotion and volatility, since as she said, so much, or too much- was going on with her at the time. "in the blue of my oblivion" could represent a myriad of different things. the vast blue that exists inside of you could be sadness, apathy, oblivion, or emptiness. to me it's what she says-oblivion- just, nothingness, that goes on and on forever. nothing else can be trusted to go on forever. and every other feeling is trapped. at one moment you could be feeling sexually, another utterly destitute, another happy.. but it is always calm in that infinite blue. |

this song is about always being on the outside of things, but continuing to travel, like a tourist. it's about loneliness, and is by far my favorite song on OK Computer. |

| Tori Amos – Cloud On My Tongue Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
I think this song is about being silenced all the time. You can't be yourself and everyone is cold to you. Every day is nearly the same. She's also looking back on memories like "being with is borneo," "wearing his tatoo,"... but ultimately the song is about being silenced. |

| Tori Amos – Liquid Diamonds Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
I still haven't nearly figured out the entire song, but the line "underwater thing" has gained new meaning for me. "I guess I'm an underwater thing..." I interpret this as she means under water.. blue, sad, stifled.. she can't breathe, she's struggling in the depths.. and *also: she's misunderstood. she says, "I guess I can't take it personally." People are misreading her. She's blurred by the crests of water. You know when you try to look under the water, but all you see is the surface? That's what Tori means. people have a disfigured, distorted and unclear vision of her, and that upsets her greatly because she's been through hell and she feels like a terrible mess. |

| Fiona Apple – Fast as You Can Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
this song is me. I think with the beast, the beast represents everything that rouses conflict in you- life is conflict, so there will always be the beast. "I fight him always and still.." this line reflects me so well. i get on people's nerves BECAUSE i get on my own. the bridge is also astounding. random, but i love this Fiona line: "I'll never wake up knowing how or why" |

| Aimee Mann – Save Me Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
This is one of the best songs ever written. It clearly has some self-pity, but if she can't love anyone, then of course she feels sorry.. the character in this song still has a heart. I believe this song was written for the character "Claudia" in Magnolia, who can't save herself from destruction and can't make connections with anyone else. She wanders through a life of lonliness. I listened to this song a lot in Colorado. When you feel like a freak it's hard to love anyone.. you don't want to be vulnerable. Yet, the voice in this song is vulnerable and sensitive. She wants a final chance at redemption, to jump back into life: "Save Me." On first listen this song really freaked me out. But if you give it multiple listens, you will draw a lot from it. The bridge is beautiful, and the chorus makes me cry. |

| Fiona Apple – Paper Bag Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| This is a wonderful, wonderful song. I think although it's pretty clear what the main subjects are, that the song has several meanings. at moments Fiona despises him, but she misses him too much to let go of him: "A fail to kiss is a fail to cope..." she is waiting for him to come back to her, but she knows that it is a doomed relationship. I love her vocal improv at the end. | |
