"The Disillusionist" could be about a lot of things, but like a mosaic, Damiera's music can't be looked at too closely or the lyrics start lose their meaning. Looking at these words on the screen, it almost seems overbearing and confusing. But when I listen to the song I think of someone who is re-examining his past and realizing that maybe things didn't work out the way he wanted, and that just a slight adjustment of his angle on life could have rectified his situation. Maybe with a love that he let slip away, but who knows? For Damiera's songs, it's important to just let the words wash over you and not over-analyze it. The lyrics are just as frenetic as the music and you might drive yourself crazy. Aside from that, The Disillusionist is one of my favorite songs, and it seems like just a b-side (if that) to Damiera. Too bad! |

| Let's Go Out and Get Fucked to me is one of the most honest and unapologetic songs of the human condition. The urge to live life in a way that makes putting up with the toils of our daily grind seem worthwhile. It's what life is all about--not paying bills and busting your ass to make some insignificant dent in some company's numbers, but really living life, and living the HELL out of it. I mean, I want to live so damn hard that I do backflips through space, goddammit. I listen to this song in a cubicle and nod my head not only to the beat, but also the concept... because man, I wanna go out and get fucked just like I've always wanted. | |

I'd also like to offer the point of view that the subject is trapped outside of himself, not necessarily shutting out the world with a metaphorical wall... for instance: The sun will shine like never before. One day I will be ready to go see the world behind my wall. This sounds like there's a part of himself that he doesn't understand, and he feels that one day he will find it and come to terms with it. On the other hand, there is some flip-flopping between the verse and chorus, and this might be a translation thing. However, it could make sense that if this supposition was true, then the subject might have to take other people's observation that he is beautiful on the inside for face value. Just saying. I think there are some great points on here about the subtle hints that Arcade Fire drops regarding death, faith and war. This song, like the whole album, is phenomenal. I also would like to comment that the discussions here in the Arcade Fire directory are some of the most well thought out and coherent on this site (that I've seen). Then again I could just be looking in the wrong places. Great work, everyone! |

unfortunately, I think the reason people don't comment on the meanings of these 80's songs, is the fact that a lot of them aren't really about anything in particular.. Anyway, Ratt owns. Warren Dimartini is the shi-ite. I think this song is about seducing chick.. isn't that what most of these songs were about anyway? doin chicks?? |

Really classic IM. Its almost straight out punk in the middle, but when the guitars get a bit more complicated, that subsides a bit. Why do people always assume its teenagers commiting suicide?? LOL where does it say anything about teenagers... Get off my lawn!! Damn kids and your.. music!! |

I would have to agree with that evaluation. I just imagine being on an extensive tour around that time. Iron Maiden's tour previous to this album (the Powerslave tour) had spanned well over a year (!), and to be on the road for that long.. in a different place every night must be very alienating. I think of these lines most: Ain't it funny how it is, you never miss it til it's gone away, And my heart is lying there and will be til my dying day. We can take our homes for granted, but when you're away for that long, from family and friends, you realize what you've lost (or given up). He's saying his 'heart' will always be back at home- until the day he dies. |

I think this song is about the way the world seems to be getting closer and closer to a breaking point, and when it finally gets here, you just book it and run away from it all.. while everyhing else falls apart. There are also overtones of how people know there are these problems and still do nothing "pray the world will mend its ways" (a passive approach?) Note the separation of California from the rest of the world- as if they're asking why hollywood is caught up with celebrity and vanity when other people are starving and suffering. I really like this song. It's very brooding/wild and melodic. I'm surprised no one else has commented |
