So, I've found the cathode ray reference to be more blatant, I must have been overanalyzing. Cathode Ray Tubes (CRT's) are employed into your traditional televisions.
So the reference is therefore speaking of how many hitch themselves to unreality in their living rooms.

love it, I don't exactly know what the artist meant by that line
but
I interpret it rather profoundly.
A cathode ray was a set-up used by JJ Thompson when he discovered the existence and properties of electrons. The first solid evidence of the existence of subatomic particles. So, thanks to the cathode tube and its revelation, we were able to delve in much deeper into the science of chemistry.
So within the cathode ray, we lost vision of what is really important in life, the real challenges we as the human race face.
