Die Antwoord – $copie Lyrics 10 years ago
My Afrikaans is not great, but it's better than nothing...English translation in lowercase, original English in uppercase.

Hosh! Look here kids.
We're gonna fuck real nice yeah?

I GOT WHAT YOU WANT BOY, I GOT WHAT YOU WANT
I GOT WHAT YOU WANT BOY, YOU NEVER GOING TO GET IT
I GOT WHAT YOU WANT BOY, I GOT WHAT YOU WANT
NO YOU NEVER GOING TO GET IT, SO YOU MIGHT AS WELL FORGET IT

Yo, Ninja's in the motherfucking house
I zone in thick when I move up on a girl
HELLO BABY, KISS, KISS! kiss Look here
What's up! Can I stick my cock in your pussy?
Uh, that's how I'm rolling.
A fucking cool status, ZONING FOR A BONING
RAP FANTASY WITH A REAL LIFE TOUCH
UH, FEEL MY RUSH

I'M wise, RIPPING TO THE BASS, TRIPPING OFF MY FACE
I'M LACED, HOOK YOU WITH A PHRASE, PUT YOU IN A DAZE
RAP-RAVE T-T-T-TO THE GRAVE, sentences inside me
take five, my cock is stiff inside your life
SAY MY NAME! NINJA! WE CAN PLAY A GAME
take a chance, MY FUCKIN RHYMES PUT YOU IN A TRANCE
shake your body, shake-shake your body
I HOPE YOU CAN LIKE IT IN THE HOLE yeah?

(hook)

HO$H NINJA'S BACK WHAT A FUCKIN party
Another fucking phat track, come let's smoke a joint
Take a look at this potent marijuana
Come, let's these two bimbos back to the room
Got a bottle of brandy from Solly Kramer's [a liquor store chain]
MY BODY'S LIKE A GLADIATOR'S BODY ARMOUR
FEEL MY FORCE
Take out my sausage [slang for penis], mess on your breasts
NEXT, fuck it, it's A FRIDAY NIGHT
SEX, HERE fuck it, MY BRAINS FRIED
I can see another bimbo there by the dancing
I want this chick's lipstick on my dipstick [slang for penis]
We're chilling there at the speaker
She's shy, I understand, yo her name is Marieke
I put my hand on her tits
My cock gets as hard as a nine millimeter

Yuck! What the fuck is that? Piss?
No man, it's that vaginal fluid
You're lying!
NO REALLY, IT ARE FROM THAT CHICK PLAYING WIF HER KOEKSUSTER [a South African dessert, slang for pussy]
DA SMELL ARE REMINDING ME OF THE SEA
IT MAKES ME WANT TO PARTY BRU!

My cock dances like this!
NO-NO-NO!
NO MEANS YES

I GOT WHAT YOU WANT BOY, I GOT WHAT YOU WANT
I GOT WHAT YOU WANT BOY, YOU NEVER GOING TO GET IT
I GOT WHAT YOU WANT BOY, I GOT WHAT YOU WANT
NO YOU NEVER GOING TO GET IT, SO YOU MIGHT AS WELL FORGET IT

BUT I AM THE ONE!
The one that's getting fuck all pussy tonight!

Crash Test Dummies – God Shuffled His Feet Lyrics 14 years ago
mockingsmile is the only one that comes close - "He seems kind of nervous and confused". The song suggests God doesn't know what he's doing; or at least that he doesn't know why he's doing it. God shuffles his feet out of embarassment, nervousness, of not wanting to appear a fool.

It's neither a parable nor a joke. God is blathering. He means well but doesn't have the answers.

I don't think this is meant as a picture of reality but as a "what if" type story.

The Cure – All Cats Are Grey Lyrics 16 years ago
wow... i never saw it as being in a grave - a "cave" surrounded by (grave) "stones"...makes so much sense - he never considered his death (being "in bed") and the columns each represent a person. the coffin itself could be the "death cell". and what I came here to say actually ties in well with the death of someone without faith, who just lies in the graveyard...

I always thought "all cats are grey" comes from a reasonably famous logic example, viz. "All cats are grey. Spot is a cat. Therefore Spot is grey." I know that sounds ridiculous but perhaps using it is showing the loneliness and emptiness of someone reliant on logic rather than Faith.

I hadn't heard laurelinwyntre's proverb but a quick google brings it up. And makes a lot more sense than what I said - perhaps the logic example is based on the proverb though.

Alice in Chains – I Can't Remember Lyrics 16 years ago
tom-van, i think we are agreeing a lot more than you realize... my original post states that i think its a God-bash, too. and clearly, from my activity on the site, i too think Staley and Cantrell were great songwriters.

despite that tirade against me, as I said *I see nothing about drugs in these particular lyrics* and in fact the only reason i mentioned drugs at all is because it annoys me the way some people start with the presupposition that the lyrics are NOT drug related simply because they don't want them to be. Personally i happen to see a lot of drug influence in many of AiC's lyrics, and I don't think that's a bad thing. that is my own interpretation and I don't feel like you have to agree. I completely see your point about my interpretation of Dirt for example, he never once says the word "heroin" but he also makes no mention of a girlfriend, father, or anyone else who could be the "you" he mentions in the song.

and weirdly enough, i agreed with shineglass that half of their drug references are good and the other bad... i guess people get defensive and can't see the similarities of opinion for the differences.

my only problem with your post was that you claimed that the members had not tried drugs until after facelift, which is something you can't possibly know. I must apologise to you, I think i was fishing for a fight a bit, i can't remember it was a while back. but i clearly got one, and i understand your point of view much better now; so it seems i got what i wanted.

Jerry Cantrell – Cut You In Lyrics 16 years ago
thanks redsand, you gave me a lot to think about - what a rational and thought out post, i think you might be right, maybe it has nothing to do with layne. its so easy for outside observers like us to project what you think are obvious topics (like layne) onto the meanings of songs, when in reality Jerry was like u say an autobiographical writer.

i still like to think Layne played a part in this song anyways, maybe from the angle that Jerry would call Layne up when he was high. I'm wondering who his "part time friend" was. i don't think it was his dealer, as he calls him up once he's already using.

Although, maybe its not about drugs whatsoever also, and just about Jerry's reclusiveness, which is something else he's known for. he only mentions drugs twice here, after all "I make a trip, when I'm out of fun" and "whenever I'm stoned"... maybe its an apology of sorts to his friend(s) who he spends large amounts of time away from... dont know... hoping to hear some more thoughts on this one

YES! probably THE most miserable albums i've ever heard. and misery rules dude. people relate most to others when they feel their pain.

As for the drugs, they certainly affected the artists ability, you can see it in their performances... but as for the artists art, its steroids.

you are totally right though, aic would still rock out if they suddenly converted to hare krishna and just chanted their albums. And i miss Layne as much as anyone.

Soundgarden – Beyond the Wheel Lyrics 16 years ago
damn rock musicians will say anything in interviews to throw ppl off the trail, wont they bucketheaded?

the wheel is considered (one of) the oldest (and influential) of human inventions; a testament to human intellect. Chris is saying, we have moved far beyond the wheel: we use our intellectual power to find ways to fight and crush each other. The song speaks of WAR: "churning storm/Of hailing burning bones".

"tiny baby" is the innocent victim in all this, unaware of what happens in the world around him... but "tiny baby grows" to be the adult involved in fighting for profit. The Man - "Is he doing what he can/by overturning other stones" - is he fighting other people to make Mother's life more comfortable? Whats worse, he shows his sons how to fight so he doesnt have to do it - does this smack of governments sending armies, or am i crazy?

"The wheel" has steered human life around, we now use our knowledge "driving flesh and blood/Deep into the ground"

What a voice, what a range, over 3 octaves! too bad he can't sing like that anymore. and what a riff, what a solo.. And i agree with rock_hawk too, the placing of the song between 665 and 667 suggests apocalyptic overtones (perhaps war-induced) - AND IT DOESN'T FUCKING DISAPPOINT!

Kyuss – One Inch Man Lyrics 16 years ago
i think when someone does feel insecure about an aspect of their personality (illustrated very well by a man's penis) they tend to blow the problem out of proportion and end up making it worse for themselves.

Damn my thoughts for you
Love my time for you
Am I time for you

Here someone does want to fuck the one inch man, but he's creating a problem where none exists, and ends up lonely. His partner is happy spending time/loving/being loved by the one inch man, but he's questioning that because he has a small dick.

So, in brief, its about creating problems for yourself by not accepting your short (ahem) comings.

Alice in Chains – A Little Bitter Lyrics 16 years ago
well now. this song really does conjure up some weird and wonderful ideas about God, which is great imho, because thats what the song is about. at least to me...

Lord is this a test
Was it fun creating, yeah?
My god's a little sick
And he wants me crazy
Who
Are you
Who can say
It's ok to live through me?

those are the most important lines. and powerful. turning around to your creator and saying, who the motherfuck do you think you are? did you have fun "knitting me together in my mother's womb"? you know what, a god that puts you through what life is, is fucking SICK. you want to live thru me? deny your maker, deny him.

haha but as i was saying before i began that antigod rant, actually i think its about how fame got to him and how people wanted to be like him, u know, people came up to the rival and said, "I do drugs 'cuz of u!"!! how u sposed to live with that?! the most illustrative line of that is "you're a wrinkled magazine" ... means that the people are trying to follow a person that doesn't exist, other than in an old mag. its about the way he was exploited for his talent "you spend me"...

i want to go on about the other metaphors in this song, "buying pennies/penance" etc but i think i'll do that when im sober rather

Kyuss – Writhe Lyrics 16 years ago
dudes i think Dominik's kidding... shit i think people take this site a little too seriously... must be full of 15 year olds (sic)! goddam if you're going to be over 18 and still on songmeanings you're gonna take some flak! haha cmon people what happened to the random hate?

anys im not 100% about the lyrics but i hear LightningBolts ones i think, and they seem to make more sense. But dont ask me my ears are going in my old age from all those ACDC concerts as a toddler.

The least you guys can do is comment on the songmeaning when you rant about each other. This song to me is about people mindlessly following trends. The first verse, something they as a band have experienced, is that satanism is "in" in rock music. So just because everyone else is doing it, a band will sing for Satan, something Kyuss here is mocking.

The second verse, whichever way you hear the lyrics, is about the way people (presumably the posers u guys speak of) dress and worry about their hairdos and shit, which is kinda the exact opposite of rebelling.

I have a funny take on the chorus, hopefully i'll pick up some random hate for this, is about pushups. people putting themselves through so much effort to "look good"... writhe like snakes, exercise on the floor. "out you go" when you're not around, the dude with the physique goes and does hundreds of pushups to look that way.

I guess the last verse is about a genuine person that also doesn't buy into the superficial nature of people, someone who keeps the speaker's feet on the ground, "You keep my limit alive". The last two lines are quite awesome, theres much more behind her smile than what's on the surface, and her kiss makes it worth getting to know that.

The thing i really love about Kyuss is the way they use contrast to such a powerful effect. You kindof anticipate a big balls-out yelling chorus but the melody and style just changes and the result is immense.

Kyuss – Demon Cleaner Lyrics 16 years ago
Cant you people look beyond your nose? Just because Kyuss is labeled a "Stoner Rock" band doesn't mean all they write about is Pot. In my opinion, "stoner" is used in this sense as relating more to an attitude than drugs... Stoners are typically laid-back, bordering on apathetic, people; fun loving but slow paced; and anything from rejecting common society to downright anarchistic. I can't help but get the feeling some of the posters here are straight from Wikipedia (perhaps after hearing Tool's live cover with Scott Rheeder).

I prefer (and a quick google will show you Josh Homme does, too) the term "Desert Rock". To me that metaphoricalizes the whole sound, the haze, the fuzz, the sludge, the late afternoons abusing one's substance of choice (and yes the clouds of bong-smoke), being away from the masses and amongst friends, playing music for the sake of music to whomever chooses to listen. In fact most of the stoners that I know and love (and join) aren't even really into this music.

On to the song:

I would say its about religious folk that claim you're heathen when in fact your heresy is merely a by-product of their own faith. They tell you you're a madman, demon-possessed, going to hell; and they're here to save you. I think the verses are spoken from the point of view of someone that's been taken in by this, and he feels that he needs to go see the demon cleaner to be healed.

Also about perhaps the priests or holy men that end up doing it for their own glory, "I'm the only way"...

Kyuss – Catamaran (Yawning Man cover) Lyrics 16 years ago
I also heard that this was a Yawning Man song, I haven't had the pleasure of hearing their work unfortunately, but they were described by Kyuss as the greatest band they'd ever seen, as well as most inspirational... thats a pretty positive review from one of the greatest and most inspirational bands that I know.

I love the guitar in the verse and the contrast of the chorus.

Alkomon, what the hell.

I think, maybe, just maybe, hes saying he has his own spirituality in nature, the smooth stones, the cool air... thats how he feels God. He doesn't need the trappings of religion to "brace" him or impose God's "will" on him, he doesn't doubt the power of God or the universe, so leave him the hell alone.

Also or some reason the version i got was tagged "Catanarav". is that just typos? "catamaran"... i dont understand the connection with the title at all.

Kyuss – Whitewater Lyrics 16 years ago
i agree, eskimo's spot on. being completely overcome and awestruck by the immensity of nature, expressed far more in the "massive and glacial" (great description scooper) instruments than the lyrics themselves. "Whitewater" as a force of nature.

The first verse seems to be about how small and insignificant one is in the beauty of the world. the sunshine passes by, almost as if his love of it is unrequited. He is so completely mindblown by the natural world, his very existence seems a waste of time by comparison, and yet at the same time he feels at home amongst it.

The second verse at a guess is about how people try to control or manipulate nature: "you move your own mountain", perhaps a reference to quarrying or mining or some other human activity...
BUT the trees have grown, suggests that nature always claims it back, and now that nature rules again he feels that its a return to "home" for him.

this song overwhelms me every time I hear it (which is a lot cuz Kyuss completely possesses me most of the day) which is why I think they put Lick Doo at the end, a lighthearted sort of comic relief to the magnitude of Whitewater.

Kyuss – Green Machine Lyrics 16 years ago
from what i hear kyuss was a really non-commercial band, even tho they were approached by major labels and MTV (who wanted to film their generator bashes) they always turned it down in favour of doing their own thing for fun not profit.

I think this song is about that, a green machine is a money-making enterprise, like they could have turned their band into. and even tho he fights his own greed (the war in his head) he has a "wheel of understanding" of the bigger picture to avoid selling out, which kyuss truly managed to do.

the second verse is "hi-fidelity" (ie music) not "hospitality". he's saying he has all he wants, nature, clean air, and his music, he doesn't need the money they're offering him. Kyuss really enjoyed being kyuss, playing their songs. He's doing his bit to break down the green machine, by not giving in to the truckloads of money they were being offered to turn it into a job.

Jerry Cantrell – Settling Down Lyrics 17 years ago
from all the bullshit interviews and articles I read, I hear that Jerry had a long time girlfriend, that he really cared for, but they inevitably broke up because Jerry, being a rock god, was unable to stay faithful to her. This song I guess is about Jerry's inability to settle down. I like it, its honest, and I think Jerry really did love her to let her go. He described her as the most beautiful woman in the world.

"If there never is again/You were the one"

thats really beautiful, even though he's unable to settle down, he still says she was the one. Its fucking sad at the same time but I have more respect for Jerry that he chose his career over a woman.

Alice in Chains – Blood Tears Little Girl Lyrics 17 years ago
Nooooo.... Not Layne, not alice. 99% sure.

Here's why:

1. Weak lyrics... "Didn't mean to lie, didn't mean to cry/I just wanted to say goodbye"... no ways would Layne or Jerry be able to write that and sleep properly at night - superficial and contrived.

2. Layne had a flawless ear for music, I've never heard him sing out of tune even live (where it happens even to the best). In places, this is sung out of tune.

3. Out of style/character, ESPECIALLY for early AiC (as per inexperienced Layne theory). Also, there's no harmony, a classic feature of both Alice and Mad Season's vocals.

4. That guitar work is UNQUESTIONABLY not Jerry. Its amateurish. Same goes for the drumming. Bass is pretty slick though.

5. Layne had a natural wide vibrato, this is sung entirely without vibrato.

6. Layne's voice is much more nasal, this is breathy.

7. Underproduced, but still obviously semi-professionally recorded. (ie not live or anything, and there's no buzz). There would be a better mixing job done on a real alice song.

8. Neither Layne nor alice sang about pain. Dunno who keeps saying that. Maybe inspired by it, but he buried his pain in his lyrics. This song is too obvious.

9. Impossible to be about Demri, she died in 1996. What happened to Layne's sister? I missed that class.

10. Sorry, but this voice *does* sound forced, clearly inexperienced from the pronounciation of the words, and in places he's trying to eke out a vibrato that doesn't come, eg at "moon" and "fallen" in the first verse.

11. Layne's voice too distinctive to be mistaken; and too consistent to be unnatural - EVERY live recording, EVERY demo, EVERY acoustic and EVERY metal song is UNMISTAKABLY Layne. I really don't think he's putting that voice on, that's his natural singing voice. It wouldn't come through like this.

12. This wouldn't be the first misattribution...

On the other hand here's why it could be:

1. It could be Layne playing guitar, he wasn't as accomplished a guitar player as Jerry or Mike McCready (Mad Season & Pearl Jam).

2. Noone's come forward to claim it as in the case with the 5 misattributed Thread songs.

3. There is precious little information available about rare Alice tracks, they're not really a collector-friendly band I'd say. Sucks for me since I love rarities & bootlegs, although it does make a rare track a bigger treasure. So maybe this slipped through the cracks somehow.

4. If so, it MIGHT as sparklyblind said be from the Mad Season era, this is way too out of character for an alice song. Like she said, it might be him but the song was considered too personal or too different to be released.

Apologies to all those who like the song, but if you like a song it shouldn't make a difference who wrote it. Although I know it does... I probably would like this song if it was Alice. But as it stands, sorry, no... its just some high school band with a substandard lyricist singing about his ex-girlfriend. Really sorry.

um... i just wanted to know what a montreaux was... ? there's only two words to interpret in this whole song (the title) and neither have been.

i think either the definition "ballad" or "orchestra" fits best, the focus is obviously on bonzo so its HIS song i suppose, or he fronts the band just for that song.

i guess they chose the word montreux cuz it rhymes with bonzo.

hehe radioledjango, "white summer_black mountainside"... the underscore, what a testament to the death of the LP!!!

Jerry Cantrell – Cut You In Lyrics 17 years ago
onelokikitty i think you are SPOT on. the song is written from Layne's point of view. in his final years Layne was said to sit in his condo playing video games and shooting up, sometimes noone would hear from him for weeks which is why his body wasnt discoverd for 2 weeks. now Jerry only hears from his friend occasionally, and whenever he does, he's high. They talk (chew the skin) but cant get down to the real issues (the bones).

alice in chains was a band with the potential to be much bigger than they were, but their internal problems caused them to implode leaving only about 60 songs for the world to enjoy. Still Jerry (at least publicly) doesn't lay blame with anyone to the demise of his band.

apart from the obvious wedges Alice seemed like such a close-knit group. i cant help but wonder what might have been.

balanceislife i don't normally have the patience to read posts that long, only post them myself hehe, but i actually did read yours and enjoyed it. but i completely disagree with what you're saying. Who wants to live in the middle ground, at peace? when i was younger i was much more emotionally affected by things, but as i grew older i became more and more desensitised, and you know what, I hate it. I love being moved to tears or being depressed, because when the high hits you it makes it all the more enjoyable. it makes you feel alive and it makes the spectacle of life a whole lot more interesting. in a lot of ways i feel like drugs or alcohol are a good way to upset that balance, because balance is boring.

im writing this listening to mad season with tears in my eyes...Layne's voice was haunting, singing his lyrics or not. i love all the grunge voices Cornell, Vedder, Cobain, even Cantrell, but i think his the most. im so glad he took part in Mad Season, i agree that he seems so much more intimate in it than he does in Alice. from the quotes that have been posted i definitely agree that it is a reference to The Prophet. I agree, its about accountability and taking responsibility for your own pain; kidding yourself about it only drags you down deeper.

Mad Season – I'm Above Lyrics 17 years ago
i fully agree with the amphibian. a relationship that's not going too well.

the more i hear about Staley, Alice in Chains, and the grunge scene the more i feel unworthy to try to interpret it. We only hear such a fraction and its usually the bad stuff, and we try to make inferences about these guys as people and their messages.. Mad Season was another very sad story. These guys (made up of a member each of Pearl Jam, Screaming Trees, Alice in Chains, and John Baker Saunders - whose death in 1999, also from a heroin overdose, pretty much closed the door on any further work.

Having said that, if this was written by Layne, i think this is about his relationship with Jerry Cantrell. Although the two were apparently close, there was a lot of tension between them because of Layne's addictions and difficulty in getting him to work; Jerry on the otherhand seems like a bit of a workaholic by comparison (AiC had a tendency for short albums, whereas Cantrell's album Degradation Trip has 25 songs!)

It seems Layne joined Mad Season in a time when things weren't too peachy at the Alice camp, he needed to get away: "For clear space and soundess of mind/I've let you play me for some time"

"continue to pretend that I'm blind" - I think (perhaps understandably) Jerry minimised the influence Layne had in Alice, writing most of the songs, bugging him to get clean and get in the studio. But it was Layne's band too, and I think he felt that Jerry was ignoring his efforts.

"How is you're feeling so uneasy?/How is it that I feel fine"... I think Layne took the fact that Jerry was bothered by his wanting to join this sideproject as an admission of guilt almost. I think Jerry was really just trying to keep the band in one piece.

"I'm above/Over you I'm standing above/Claiming unconditional love/
Try to keep bad blood in the past...I have strength enough...to forgive/I desire peace where I live"

Layne feels like he's taking the moral high road by walking away, therefore he feels like he's "above" Jerry. He thinks Jerry doesn't get it because he isn't seeing it from a neutral angle: "Behind the unwhole truth you hide". But he also desires to work things out, and he still considers himself a part of Alice, "peace where I live", loves those guys unconditionally, he forgives them.

Anyways i expect its actually nothing like that I haven't done my research its just what I get out of the lyrics.

Alice in Chains – Died Lyrics 17 years ago
i heard this was a song Jerry was working on for his solo album, showed it to Layne, and it picked him up and back into the band. my guess is that Cantrell really tried to keep the band together, I don't think it was his choice to go solo (especially considering his first solo album even featured Inez and Kinney). I think his heart was in Alice much more than Staley's - Layne said on many occasions that music is just one of his outlets, while Cantrell imo really was the prolific member of the group, writing most of the music and lyrics, with Staley mainly contributing his charm. And its pretty obvious in hindsight that the drugs and shit got in the way of Layne's work. Don't get me wrong, I love Layne, and aic would not have been the insightful, tormented, funny, dark, epic and tragic band they were without him; but at the same time I see him as a weight that held them back. I'm astounded by Jerry's patience, how he kept his cool, stood up for Layne and made excuses for him, interview after interview and show after show... theres no better place to see that than on the unplugged show. The couple of outtakes they included on that were apparently of many - they hadn't played for 3 years and Staley was obviously sick and probably loaded. Even now Jerry is basically forced to mention Layne's legacy every time he speaks or plays. How would you like to have to mention your dead friend every single day? Fuck it, Jerry is my hero - I can't believe the strength of that man.

Although Jerry wrote that great riff and intended it for his solo album, I don't know if he had any lyrics for it. If this was written by Staley then it's certainly about Demri imho. It starts out saying he wants to go to heaven and find out where all the junkies go (to find Demri). He blames himself - he knew she was killing herself with heroin, but only now knows that he should have done something.

Next verse, he talks of visiting hell, and seeing all the fun things to do there. Maybe that's a metaphor for drugs itself.

The chorus is about Staley losing a will to live and will to work. He hardly released anything after Demri's death. I see her passing as the last straw with his fight against heroin. It seems to me that from that point he had nothing to live for but the drug.

"And it was called "Died!" talk about bad luck Staley. he should have written one called "gonna stop doing Heroin" " ... funny yet sickening... and Negrum, Inez was there from 92.. a decade before the death of Staley. I'm pretty sure he felt the effects of Layne's death as bad as any of them.

Good luck Jerry, Mike and Sean, and rest in peace Layne & Demri.

Alice in Chains – Chemical Addiction Lyrics 17 years ago
i thought it was "chasing a PIPE dream" not a "BAD dream"... pipe having a double meaning - the pipe used to smoke drugs through, or a pipe dream, a fantastic hope that is nearly impossible. The idea being, of course, that both drug taking and wishful thinking are both unproductive activities that make us feel good about ourselves but don't lead anywhere.

I think the song is about teenage experimentation. I don't agree that its to deal with any specific problems, the song is too upbeat for that. its just about "daily survival" during the teenage years, which are fucked up for everyone no matter what your background.

"Taking girls for the things I need, like booze, drugs and ass"

that's how it was for me anyway, when you become a teenager you are suddenly exposed to a world of opportunity for experimentation, i certainly wanted to try "everything once before I die". and even though you're aware what you're doing is self destructive, there's such an excitement associated with it. "our teens meant everything" = and you don't really give a crap about the future, you feel immortal and if you aren't you couldn't care anyway.

I don't think its about any specific vice, lots are mentioned in this song, sex ("ass"), booze, pot "get stoned", valiums, heroin, "drugs" in general.

theres lots of other things i wana quickly point out
"Living my life in the box" = Wasting your life watching TV
"sleepin in the trash" = getting wasted and passing out in alleys (ooh who hasn't been there...)
"smoking out till it's all black" = getting fucked to the point of passing out.

Although this is mostly a song about the enjoyment and excitement of experimentation, they're not under any illusions about where it leads, and as was said, its very prophetic...
"Goodbye, let us in and we'll lay you in the ground"

Alice in Chains – Blood Tears Little Girl Lyrics 17 years ago
i cant find this song, im sure its somewhere on the net but its must be hidden under piles and piles of capitalism. please won't someone email it to me?

ivanducttape@gmail.com

if you have any other rare bootleg mp3s or vids of aic they'd also be welcome. if you're looking for something, drop me a line, i might have it.

since I've not heard the song its probably unfair to comment, but since i dont give a crap... im very skeptical that this is AiC - Layne's voice was ALWAYS distinctive, if anything more so in their early demos. Plus the lyrics are rather contrived and superficial, with clearly forced rhyme schemes. Many other songs have been misattributed to aic on their bootlegs. It would also do well to point out that alice was exclusively metal in their early stages, to my knowledge acoustic songs and performances only appeared after facelift, and Demri only died in 1996, so its unlikely it was about her. Finally Alices early work was much more upbeat than their most famous stuff, this doesn't sound like an upbeat song to me?

but im still looking forward to hearing it... hope someone will take pity on me!!

haha

so confidence = truth? as long as tom "sounds like he knows his shit" we must all accept his opinion as fact? i wasn't bashing tom, i agree it involves God. but he said nothing of worth, just a random insult that had no valid grounding, and an interpretation backed up by a quote that made no sense.

chemical addiction is about pot? shut the fuck up. do you smoke pot? do you know anyone that does? that song is NOT about pot. but i agree, half their drug inspired songs are about how great drugs are (eg "junkhead") and the other how bad (eg "Dirt"). and since i obviously offended the smaller-minded patrons of songmeanings, maybe i should point out that my "drugs are cool" comment was tongue-in-cheek... god!

im pretty confused by that kinda personal attack when im mostly agreeing with what's being said. my "incredibly stupid" analysis of the song was based on lyrical content and similarities with a related song. i try to be reasonable but the only conclusion i come to is that shineglass is just a dickhead.

Tool – No Quarter (Led Zeppelin cover) Lyrics 17 years ago
wow y do covers always inspire a massive original vs cover, no not even, zep vs tool argument? do you guys think tool sat around saying, you know, led zeppelin were good but we can improve them. Lets take their song and remaster in and make it better. fucking morons. they covered the song not because they thought led zeppelin sucked, but because they respected, were motivated, inspired and influenced by them. i love both bands, but WITHOUT ZEPPELIN (and some other influencial bands) THERE WOULD BE NO TOOL. tool has 4 decades of bands to draw influence from, as well as the latest in fx-pedal technology, whereas all Zep had were the fucking Beatles and their own god-damn creativity.

and as one of the only (big) and certainly the best modern progressive bands out there, its very fitting that tool covered zeppelin, who invented the genre.

anyways i hate it when people rant without commenting on the song's meaning, so... the zeppelin lyrics as i understand were written as a sort of fantasy story, about knights in some unfinished business, so they "won't be home tonight" - no quarter means, no place to stay. it seems to me that maynards alterations to the lyrics would enhance the warfare aspect of the song, "kill the light", "dying peace". maybe hes relating it to modern day warfare and today's soldiers away from home.

what are your thoughts on that now, rather than on which version is better?

Incubus – Dig Lyrics 17 years ago
shit i can't believe how much i like this song... its so much more ... wholesome ... than what I usually listen to. when i first listened to light grenades i skipped this halfway through cuz I figured brandon had gone backstreet boy on us. but this is one of my faves now.

its a friendship song, maybe in the context of a relationship, who knows. i agree with tomdawg, its like a letter. if i change, slap me. when you've changed your old friends are the ones who forgive you and remind you who you are.

its a play on dig - someone that digs at us = gets to us; at least we dig each other = like/understand each other; dig me up = uncover the real me.

Alice in Chains – I Can't Remember Lyrics 17 years ago
i think, along with Angry Chair, this is about his parents punishing him and how its affected how he turned out. Some classic (yet arguably abusive) punishments are mentioned in the lyrics: "i haven't eaten today" - withholding food, "screamin' at me", stopping him from crying, using the religious angle "god will be pissed off with you"... it gets quite literal really, "mama, ooh, my angry brains of infancy"

now my personal interpretation - parents "create" kids by choosing to have them and then punish them even though almost all of their (at least early) behaviour is modelled after their parents. its like being punished for being born. and in the same way i relate that to God creating humans.

but tom makes me want to say its about drugs too because I don't know where he gets the idea AiC didn't use drugs til after facelift. listen to their demos and they have a couple of songs that would be hard to separate from drugs. Take chemical addiction for instance. And also you don't have to be a drug user to write songs about drugs, besides, most people have at least tried some form of drug by their twenties, especially cool people like Jerry and Layne. everyone knows you can't be cool without taking drugs.

Incubus – Turning Japanese (The Vapors cover) Lyrics 17 years ago
this was a misnamed song floating around the internet, the one i got at very least, *was* The Vapors song with the wrong name, not a cover by incubus or anyone else.

But the song is about masturbation, the writer has a pcture of the girl he lusts for, he wishes he had a porno one, that a doctor could take. turning japanese is a euphemism for orgasm, where your eyes screw up and you look japanese.

so there.

Alice in Chains – The Killer Is Me Lyrics 17 years ago
sorry that was the best example i can think of of a rock musician's inspiration also being his undoing. ill give you nirvanas unfortunate and extreme overrating and that the meat puppets are true unsung creative genius, but as a kid nirv opened the door - for me at least - to better music, and in the throes of teenage depression kurts lyrics make a lot more sense and the grittiness of their music really does relate to the emotion i felt at the time. their lack of real talent means i rarely listen to nirvana these days but if music is art, and art is expression, nirvana were a long way from shit.

and depression is by far the most creative force we have. depression, anger, hate, jealousy, envy, greed, lust... these topics are way more prevalent than happiness and fluffiness. who the fuck wants to hear a song about how great someones life is and how happy and stable their relationship is ? it would be a fucking grinding riff for that to keep my attention. people dwell on sadness and search for other people in misery ... happiness, people take for granted when they have it.

in the context of music, it is definitely better to have lost than loved.
