Pixies – La La Love You Lyrics 18 years ago
I disagree with nearly every comment, and consider this to be a completely sincere (and thus syrupy) love song. It's simple and somewhat trite, but I always thought the "1st base . . . home run" thing just makes it that much SWEETER.

OK, it might be tongue-in-cheek, with a nod to 50s doo-wop innocence, but I totally think it's good-natured, and by no means sarcastic, or a commentary on pop music.

Oh, and Dave Lovering does not sing "Trompe le Monde," nor do I think he could if he tried.

Pixies – River Euphrates Lyrics 18 years ago
I can't believe people think he says "Ride the tiger." Just pay attention to the context for even half a second.

They're stuck with a gasless car in the middle east, and decide they might as well "ride the tire down River Euphrates". Also note "Dead Sea make you float" also supports the inner-tube riding thing. I don't know if it is cultural to any degree, but in California, and warmer waterful climates, folks go "tubing" where they literally take a truck's tire tube and ride it down rivers, or on lakes, behind boats.

Basically, if it were "tiger," it would be the only thing in the song that made no sense whatsoever. Like if they were on the Ganges or something, then maybe they'd ride a tiger, but still--down a river? I know it sounds overly analytical, but I am of the opinion that most of Charles' lyrics aren't random syllables, or otherwise meaningless.

I like darkthundah's idea though, and I think it matches Charles' style very well. I kinda secretly hope his interpretation is accurate. The only kind of unexplained thing is the "tire".

Listen to the version on the Gigantic EP for confirmation of "tire" over "tiger." And being "tire," it is not "tyre" strictly speaking, as we spell it with the "i" in the states.

Pixies – Mr. Grieves Lyrics 18 years ago
Well, here's what I had gathered before reading the quote kindly provided by antileche above:

Mr Grieves is about (among other things?) evolution.

"You can cry, you can mope, but can you swing from a good rope?"

Meaning "being highly evolved, we can feel and emote, but we had to give up physical bonuses (of our nearest ancestors) like the ability to swing between trees."

"Pray for a man in the middle; one that talks like Doolittle"

This expresses the desire to be able to talk to animals, praying for a human - to - animal translator AND/OR it refers to "the missing link" in the evolutionary chain.

"I believe in Mr. Grieves" must just mean "I believe man evolved from the sea (to apes)"

"Do you have another opinion" challenges creationists?

"What's that floating in the water? Old Neptuna(e)'s only daughter"

Tough one, but possibly something to do with Neptune/Poseidon being god (Father) of the seas and water and oceans, and his "only daughter" being our first multi-celled or otherwise complex aquatic ancestor.

++++++++++++++++++++++

So would say I got kind of close, although I never thought about it as "end of the world". From that perspective, I think most of the above still works.

You might notice similar themes (comaraderie with non-humans +/or the sea) in TONs of his songs, such as "Wave of Mutilation," "ANA," "The Sad Punk," "Where Is My Mind," "Monkey Gone To Heaven," "Caribou," "Bird Dream of the Olympus Mons," "Palace of the Brine," "Oh My Golly!," "Velouria" and "All Over The World."

Pixies – Down To The Well Lyrics 18 years ago
I am with sansmilk and feinsteins on this one. I believe "going down to the well" is synonymous with "having an orgasm." I think he is singing about conversing with a sexually experienced girlfriend figure, and he is curious about the actual feeling, being a virgin himself.

"what matter does it make, if there'll be favorite songs playing in my head" I think might be referring to a traditional desire to have your "first time" be special. Like maybe have some romantic music setting the mood, etc.

Incidentally, I don't think Charles Thompson sings about drugs much at all. And certainly not from some post addiction perspective. He mentions smoking pot, which he says he does occasionally, but, unlike those of so many "artists" whose lives are basically defined by self-imposed debauchery and addiction, I believe Charles' topics are rarely as uninteresting as "man, being addicted to ________ sucks."

Pixies – The Holiday Song Lyrics 18 years ago
"Impregnated her on the sheets"? Dude, Charles Thompson would never write something so boring as that.

It is a song about incestuous masturbation. "He took his sister from his head and he painted her on the sheets" is basically saying "he imagined his sister and mentally painted her onto the sheets" (much like how someone might imagine some sexy lady when he touches himself). I was thinking "rolled her up in grass and trees" could be simply describing the pattern on the sheets as he caressed them, imagining his sister's naked body.

As far as "This ain't no holiday, but it always turns out this way," I am at a loss. I know what "here I am with my hand" means, of course. He is obviously saying that something about holidays might cause loneliness and self-gratification, OR that despite it not being a holiday, it still ends up feeling like a holiday.

I really can't figure that out, other than this shot in the dark (no pun meant):

Holidays are when family gets together, and he is saying, "even though it's not a holiday, I always end up dreaming of getting with my sister, with my hand in my pants."

Pixies – The Sad Punk Lyrics 18 years ago
It's about how we're all driving around in the sad punk known as the dinosaur. While there are plenty of theories, there isn't really a "smoking gun" for what caused dinosaurs to die altogether. But we still "smell smoke" from cars which run on fossil fuels and drive on roads of tar, despite dinosaurs being extinct.

"and evolving from the sea
would no be too much time for me
to walk beside you in the sun"

This is a theme throughout Charles' music. Evolution and our aquatic fraternity.

I think he ends the song with "I read something about a SON of a gun named extinction" which could be commenting on environmental factors that might lead to our own extinction. Like, with the dinosaurs, there was a "gun named extinction" that wiped them out. Now he has read something about "a son of a gun named extinction" or the next big live wiper-outer.

Pixies – There Goes My Gun Lyrics 18 years ago
I wish people would not "correct" based on their own hearing, or some other unreliable "source."

All three verses are a guy trying to get someone's attention. ("Yoo-hoo", "look-a-me", "frienda foe" as printed in the CD notes)

Taking liberties with the lyrics, I come up with "You hoo" or "you ho" & "look at me" & "friend or foe". To me, it's almost like he's a guy with no self esteem who ejaculates prematurely (not saying the two are necessarily related).

It sounds like "just another" of Charles' streets of Puerto Rico tales, to aparently do with some snakey prostitute trying to lure the singer in.

Pixies – I'm Amazed Lyrics 18 years ago
The little spoken interlude isn't a part of the song. It has been recorded and performed live before and after Surfer Rosa, and never had anything to do with the field hockey banter.

I doubt the above lyrics are correct anyway; they happen to rhyme throughout the song. For instance:

And when I was a little boy
A ball of string my favorite toy (I'm amazed)

The day before that I was wed
She went upstairs and shot her head (I'm amazed)

Also, before Albini got his hands on it, it had this extra section, with the lyrics "all broke hearts will all mend, all broke hearts will all mend"

As for its meaning . . . maybe something to do with trying to mend severed ties?
