Seven (and a half) years later, thanks to valkyriemp for the tips on the meaning of "the tupping fool"... Still, the whole meaning eludes me (maybe I'm getting too old) and I can only relate it to sexual behaviour (please, pardon me).
But I, honestly, think this is a very great song, and sincerely miss that times when songs were just a merely way to say something that the performer wants to make public in a poetrical manner, not just a way to make money. |

I don't know why somebody has to relate this song with ETs, space travelling, abductions, and any other X-Files thing. Although my natural language is spanish and I live in Cuba, I just think that only by looking at the song title one can guess what this song is about: the coming of love.
The song starts and ends defining all the new feelings and sensations that love brings to the people when real, ultimate love is finally here with us. Surely, I guess that no one can say "I felt in love and life doesn't change for me, everything was the same as ever..." or a similar phrase denying the impact of love in every people. |

Many songs have many layers of possible interpretations. So, if you think this song is about a sorcerer's apprentice, it's ok, but if you think that this song is about how you can turn up things when you are deeply in love and realize that the other part was playing with you... it's also ok.

"A well besides the river" contains one of the best lyrics for a song I had read in my life (I have 40 years). I don't know what means "the tupping fool" because english is not my natural language.
I think this song is giving us advices of what to do with ourselves as human beings. |

Well, after reading all your interpretations,I am not sure of what this song tells me. In the meantime, I tell you that I write a short story about the bizarre love between a female vampire and a male human, based on this song.
Of course, "all your mental armour drags me downd" and "nothing hurts like your mouth" gives me the idea for the story. |

Although english is not my natural language, I can understand that this song is about growing differences between related people caused by the lack of communication between them.
