Amy was a heroin addict who managed to clean herself up before she crashed and burned. She was part of a creative group of painters and writers Adam knew, who were all junkies, and she was really young, and managed to get herself out of the mess that she was in, and ended up going back to Wyoming, went back to being a ballerina and went to college. So I'd say it's a story with a happy ending, that I guess is where she hit the atmosphere, on her metaphorical rocket ride out of the depths of despair, where she cleaned herself up and made something of her life.

This song is about his mother not his grandmother, and i gotta say its one of my favourite songs of all time. but i dont understand why a little boy would address him as son??? can anyone answer me this? because it bugs me and ruins my perception of darius as a lyricist but i know he's great and theres probably a reason that i dont understand, maybe its cos im english i dont know??

The mother of the boy came to hazard when he was 7, this indicates that the boy was not bought up with her, as it never stated he came to hazard at 7. He was possibly mixed up emotionally by his lack of stability within the family. There is nothing in this song which sugests the boy was retarded in anyway, he was probably just a mischievous child who needed a guiding hand to teach him right from wrong, the local opinion of him was very low due to his behavioural problems throughout his youth, this led to people mistrusting him. then when his girlfriend goes missing, people started to point the finger at him, accusing him of murdering her. The night she vanished, they were by the river together, then they went their separate ways and she was never seen alive again. I believe what someone sugested that he wanted to comit suicide in the river, probably to be with her as she was the only person he ever really felt close to and bonded with. Its a sad song really. But he never killed her.

The women claimed to be the person on whose shoulder Elisabeth cried when she thought Duritz was out on the road being unfaithful. "[It's] something that I didn't ever do," Duritz said, "but she was kind of crushed by that thought when we were going out. That song is about how 'I wish I was a girl so you would believe me.' If I was your friend you'd probably actually believe me when I tell you this."

The verses are about how horrifyingly gray and mundane and pointless life in general can be. Nothing catastrophic. Little horrors. Envy of other people. Deep need that is unsatisfied. Boredom. And so the chorus is about how seductive coma-visions are: these dreams of placidity, colors, shapes that are so clean. But the peace is a trap to the person in the song; he doesn't want to fall prey to the visions.

this is my favourite song of all time, about realising that you'e been with the wrong person for so long and really need to do something about it, so you know you need to end it but it's so difficult to do because you don't want to hurt their feelings and you don't want to let them down, but at the end of the day, you know it's the only option left. Fantastic band all round, I agree with big w about not having enough comments on embraces old material

it's probably wrong, but i've always thought this song is about him going through a nervous breakdown, i think the girl is maybe someone who he dated who was a tv star (maybe monica or rachel from freinds), but it's not really her, it's him dreaming, when he's lying in bed, it's so quiet and he gets all this time to think and so he imagines her with all his emotions she is telling him that everyone is against him and is laughing at him, making him paranoid, making him angry and possibly even suicidal. it all adds to the crap floating through his mind in life, how sad he is, how angry he is and how scared and mixed up he is, and the girl is adding to it, thats why he says he's not sleeping anymore, because he's overcome the worst of his breakdown and he's now on the mend, so because he's not sleeping, she can't hurt him, he also says about following her down through a valley, and he'll follow her down but won't come up again, basically meaning that following her down will bring him further and further into depression and self pity that he'll get beyond help, but he opts against that and this song is about coming out the other end. Does anyone agree with this? or am i speaking crap?

I think peoples explanations are spot on, but i also see with adams lyrics, how certain songs fall into others, like, The devil's in the dreaming You see yourself descending from a building to the ground You watch the sky receding You spin to see the traffic rising up And it's so quiet You're surprised And then you wake that is a perfect explanation of what you'd see and feel if you you were to jump off a building which was mentioned in round here, but also, like the song black and blue it's about the feeling of dreaming about committing suicide but not actually going ahead with it. with this song , i agree with countmycrows and catchme about elizabeth believing her friends over him that he's been cheating while on tour, but it's also about the negative effect that it's having on him cos he loves her soo much, and nothing he can do or say will change her beliefs, that he's having severe nightmares that frankly would scare the hell out of me. It's a shame it takes so much pain and torment to produce the worlds greatest lyricist, but you can't help but feel for him
