Regina Spektor – Ne Me Quitte Pas Lyrics 8 years ago
@[phunkometry:5234] - This is the best explanation I have heard. I guess it does help to know of Bowery, Lexington, and The Bronx. It also helps if they play the last verse in the song which not all versions do. Thanks!

Alabama – Song Of The South Lyrics 15 years ago
It's interesting to point out that the view of the "Old South" as depicted in your third paragraph is itself a media-created illusion. This take on the South was mostly conjured up by Southern newsmen and novelists in the 1880s. When Southerners tie these feelings of the Old South into pre-Civil War reminiscence, they are in essence fooling themselves into believing that things used to be regal and grand for their ancestors. Truth is, 2% of the population had 95% of the money while enslaving half of their fellow man. The South was a haven for elitist racists. I wonder if Alabama's reference to "Gone With The Wind" is perpetuating this misrepresentation of paradise ruined by the "evil" Yankees. So when you see some kid driving around with a Confederate flag on the back of his truck, he is really saying "I miss the culture where my ancestors were probably forced into poverty by Southern aristocracy, tricked into fighting for a secessionist state that really gave a damn about them, and slavery wasn't all that bad."

Roxette – Fading Like a Flower (Every Time You Leave) Lyrics 18 years ago
I have met many women who refuse to let me even listen to Roxette because the songs represent scummy ex-boyfriends. This is one here no exception, and it might be my favorite song in the world. Please, ladies, be kind to the rare man who likes Roxette. :)

Sophie B. Hawkins – As I Lay Me Down Lyrics 18 years ago
Oh, and the latest Windows Media Player lets you slow down the song you are playing (at least as MP3). You slow it down to 1/2 speed, and she definitely 100% is saying "ooh la kah koh" as rodsfan pointed out.

Sophie B. Hawkins – As I Lay Me Down Lyrics 18 years ago
My favorite song ever. I still ponder the lyrics though. Is this about a woman who goes to sleep dreaming about someone she loves who she physically cannot be near? Is the person dead or just far away? Does she talk at the end about how she knows one day she will be reunited with her love in heaven?

The Arrogant Worms – The War Of 1812 Lyrics 18 years ago
Sounds like these Canadians did not like Johnny Horton's retelling of Southern resilience at the end of the War of 1812. The fact that the British navy (there was no autonomous country of Canada at the time), the most powerful in the world, raided our poor agrarian capital and set fire to a few buildings is nothing to be proud of. But hey, think of all the beavers we saved temporarily reducing Toronto to ashes.

Now don't get me wrong, I enjoyed this song and Canada. CBC totally beats NPR, and the QEW is a lovely road to get stuck on during rush hour. However, let me tell you, I have never seen such an inferiority complex as with the people I met in Canada. Every other joke was about our dollar (not as strong as it was when I heard the jokes), and any reference to something American where its counterpart in Canada was noteably different always got a snotty rebuttal.

Why am I rambling? I forget, but I love poutine (french fries with curdled cheese in some sort of brown gall stone sauce)....a Canadian staple.

Any American (such as myself) will learn more about Canada from this song than we ever learned in school. Canadian pirates rock!

John Denver – Wild Montana Skies Lyrics 18 years ago
This song is missing the last few lines of lyrics about after the man dies. I would write them if I knew them word for word. Anyhow, what a great song. Makes me want to visit this beautiful place Montana. This place that is always there for him to come back to. I'm not sure if he ever got the woman of his own though, or was that just a metaphor for life?

Doug Stone – Why Didn't I Think Of That Lyrics 18 years ago
Good song to remind you of how to treat your lady. Maybe they don't need it or deserve it, but you are the only guy in the world who can treat her that way, and that makes it special.

Crash Test Dummies – Afternoons and Coffeespoons Lyrics 18 years ago
Well I can totally agree with BlueandStarry. Unfortunately, the poem made little sense to my peasant mind. Any insider info on the poem which the song is based would be great.

Sara Evans – Born To Fly Lyrics 18 years ago
My 2nd favorite country song of all time. I always hated adults telling me I had nothing but time when I was younger. Homogenous adult response to the anxious juvenile interrogative.

Sara Evans – Suds in the Bucket Lyrics 18 years ago
Moves fast. I love county songs that move fast. Definitely a good driving in your car song. Not a very deep song, but a nice introspection of Southern life here in the USA. Oh how I do love my pink lemonade. ;)

"Where the stars hung upside down"....not sure what that means unless they are saying they are in the Southern hemisphere somewhere. Any thoughts?

Murray Head – One Night In Bangkok Lyrics 18 years ago
The chess master (I forget his name) is very focused on the game. That is part of the plot in the musical. He ignores the woman he is traveling with who I believe is his alternate. She falls for the Soviet chess player. Anyhow, the song adds to the fact that all the American cares about is chess and winning and not about love and friendship.

"Tea, girls, warm and sweet, sweet)
(Some are set up in the Somerset Maugham suite"

I had to look deep to get this one. Somerset was a writer from the turn-of-the-century whose work was somewhat racey for its time (overly sexual perhaps). I tried reading one of his books and was bored to tears. It must have been more interesting in 1905.

What does "You're in control just like a child" mean? When is a child ever in control? Is the child baby Jesus or something?

Blues Traveler – Canadian Rose Lyrics 18 years ago
Totally agree. Great song. Questions, Burlington is in VT (rather close to Canada). Why is he wondering where Vancouver is? Is he suggesting that is where she lives now? Or did she always live in Vancouver and they met as kids (where her feet didn't reach the ground) in Burlington? I would have thought maybe at summer camp or something, but the Autmn air carries him there, not Summer air. I dunno, any thoughts?

Neil Diamond – Cracklin' Rosie Lyrics 18 years ago
Well, I read in an article (presumably by Neil) that he thought to write the song after visiting an Indian reservation one night. He said the men had nothing to do but sit around and drink cheap wine which I believe was called "Cranklin Rosie". Store-bought woman that knows how to make them happy. Kinda sad, but a fun song to listen to.
