| Marillion – Fantastic Place Lyrics | 11 years ago |
| Yet another fantastic (no pun intended) track from Marillion. I love this lyric "Put your arms around my soul. And take it dancing." | |
| Marillion – Gazpacho Lyrics | 18 years ago |
The full opening goes as follows: "Ladies and gentlemen in attendance, and boxing fans joining us around the world, it's show time! The Heavyweight Championship of the World..." "Even as a child. I would find myself seeing hallucinatory images of my face changing and becoming cosmic and complete..." "The house is surrounded by helicopters..." The first part ("Ladies and gentlemen...") is apparantly a reference to Mike Tyson and Jake la Motta. The second part ("Even as a child...") is John Lennon, and is apparantly a reference to an interview he did where he said that "Surrealism to me is reality. Psychic vision to me is reality. Even as a child. When I looked at myself in the mirror or when I was 12, 13, I used to literally trance out into alpha. I didn't know what it was called then. I found out years later there is a name for those conditions. But I would find myself seeing hallucinatory images of my face changing and becoming cosmic and complete. It caused me to always be a rebel. This thing gave me a chip on the shoulder; but, on the other hand, I wanted to be loved and accepted. Part of me would like to be accepted by all facets of society and not be this loudmouthed lunatic musician. But I cannot be what I am not." The third part ("The house is surrounded...") is also a reference to John Lennon, though it was apparantly Phil Spector who said the line: Startled, Lennon gasped: "What are you talking about?" Suddenly Phil cried: "The house is surrounded by helicopters. They're trying to get them!" I'd love somebody to tell me what relevance this lot has upon Gazpacho! |
| Marillion – Gazpacho Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| The beginning of this track starting with some faint speaking. The first part is quite difficult to pick out, though it includes what is apparantly John Lennon saying "i found myself looking at halucinatory images of my face, changing and becoming cosmic". | |
| Snow Patrol – Chasing Cars Lyrics | 18 years ago |
So what are "those three words" that are "said too much"? I think they have to be "I love you". It's very much a throw-away remark nowadays and many people don't actually understand their real meaning. Great song, easily the best that Snow Patrol have done to date. |

| The Carpenters – Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| Great song. Anybody have an idea what it's about? | |
| Billy Joel – Piano Man Lyrics | 18 years ago |
@goochanator this is covered by Billy on "The Complete Hits Collection 1973-1997" compilation where he explained the various parts of the song to the audience (it's track 53 - Piano Bar). Paul was a drunk in the piano bar, who was apparantly writing "The great American novel" but by day was a real estate broker. |

| Billy Joel – Piano Man Lyrics | 18 years ago |
What many people don't know is that the opening of this song was originally different. There is a 'demo' version on Billy's "My Lives" compilation album that begins: Well it's nine o'clock on a Saturday The drinks are going fast There's an old man sitting next to me Regretting the time that has passed I have to say I prefer the mainstream version |

| Billy Joel – Scenes From An Italian Restaurant Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Billy's "Complete hits collection" has a number of live question&answer sections which provide a good insight into the meaning of his songs. This song started with Brenda&Eddie but Billy needed a way of wrapping the "meat and potatos" into something that wasn't so bitchy at them - he describes them as the 'cool kids from highschool' who came to nothing. @Matty Dubs - yes, Brenda and Eddie weren't particularly popular. Billy describes them as having "peaked too early in life" @Burgermeister: They'd already had it by the summer of '75 because the relationship was over as soon as it had started! |

| Barenaked Ladies – Life, In A Nutshell Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I love this line: And only her tenderness stopped me from bawling my eyes out Particuarly with the music that goes down in steps, it works brilliantly. As with everything from BNL, great song. |
| Billy Joel – Piano Man Lyrics | 19 years ago |
I really recommend you listen to 'Piano Bar' on Disk4 of Billy's "The complete hits collection". His explanation of this song is absolutely brilliant to listen to. Briefly: Billy Joel was being screwed over by a record company on a really bad contract. He was forced to play piano in a cocktail bar. John - a guy at the bar who bought Billy drinks Davey - a guy in the bar who was also in the navy (and probably still is!) The waitress - Billy's 1st ex wife Businessmen - unsuprisingly as it appears; businessmen getting stoned in the bar Paul - a real-estate broker, writing "the great american novel", generally drunk Old man - people asking Billy to play songs for them "Man what are you doing here" - people told Billy he was too good to play in the bar and he should sign with a record company. Infact that was the case and that's why Joel was there playing. |

| Barenaked Ladies – Bank Job Lyrics | 19 years ago |
This song is just another brilliant example of BNL's whit and humour. Easily the most humourous song on BNLAM. Perhaps my favourite part is the (faint) police siren behind this line: "'Cause you made a choice there Almost sublime" Frankly I love it. |
| Elton John – The Captain And The Kid Lyrics | 19 years ago |
This song is simply brilliant. No prizes for guessing where this came from though: "And me into a Rocket Man" |
| James Taylor – Our Town Lyrics | 19 years ago |
This is an absolutely brilliant song! It fits the story of 'Cars' almost perfectly. I love the way that it starts with "your town"... "You watched it grow, it was your town". Then time goes by, the world changes - and there's nothing that you can do to stop it. Then it becomes "our town". It's just a brilliant progression. And in JT's style too which just makes it a simply amazing song. |

| Chris De Burgh – If You Really Love Her, Let Her Go Lyrics | 19 years ago |
A father won't give his daughter's hand in marriage. He's trying to persuade the father that it is serious - "this ain't no movie romance", and that he really loves the daughter and will take care of her. The father has to realise that the daughter isn't a child any more - "she's a woman with love in her eyes". If the father really loved her then he'd do what was right for her, not what he wanted to do - otherwise she'll rebel and he'll loose her altogether - "in the morning you will wake and she'll be gone". Great song I wonder how many times this has actually happened. |

| Simply Red – Fairground Lyrics | 19 years ago |

I love the drunk beat which sounds like a rollercoaster at about 3:05. Great song |
| Queen – Love Of My Life Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| I've always wondered whether this song was written about Freddie's girlfriend Mary Austen. I've no idea why - just an hunch. | |
| Queen – Lazing On A Sunday Afternoon Lyrics | 20 years ago |
"There he goes again" I love the harmonies of what sounds like Brian here! |
| Barenaked Ladies – I Live With It Everyday Lyrics | 20 years ago |
I love these lyrics, they are so clever. Everyone falls through time and the funnel it makes But I'm staying here inside my biggest mistake Everything moves on - though it's like a funnel because you can't go back and change things. He can't move on because of his 'biggest mistake'. Simply brilliant! |

| Barenaked Ladies – This Is Where It Ends Lyrics | 20 years ago |
I love the harmonies in this song! Obviously about living with depression - "mental health is overrated" |
| Chris Rea – If You Were Me Lyrics | 20 years ago |
If we swapped places then how would I go about being you - and you being me. This song is about the differences between people "who likes to party, who stays at home", and though they aren't completely different people they have their differences. Two crazy stories, two different views. Oh, and the duet with Elton makes this song! |
| Chris Rea – Curse Of The Traveller Lyrics | 20 years ago |
The passage of live with it's twists and turns and how we are all travelling on this path 'till "the river of dreams" at the end of it. >Old freedom feels uneasy when duty is around Why does 'duty' make me think of a controlling wife?! |
| Chris Rea – God's Great Banana Skin Lyrics | 20 years ago |
If God has picked you to slip on that banana skin then you're the man! Don't think that anybody else is better than you - you are the one who was picked. I read an interview with Chris somewhere where mentioned this song. Apparantly his daughter asked how you slip on a banana skin - which prompted Chris thinking and the song was born. |
| Chris Rea – Ace Of Hearts Lyrics | 20 years ago |
This song is about a guy who falls in love. He's always avoided commitment in the past and distanced himself from things. Now his defences have fallen and he can't believe that he's fallen for somebody. He keeps waking up and thinking about her, and realising that he's hooked on her and that "only the ace of hearts" can save him. He's then thinking about life and what it means, and what she means to him. In the last verse he's thinking about how happy she has made him - happier than he has ever been before, and he feels that having her love he's got everything. |

Another thing > What makes those men do what they do > To make that person black and blue Domestic violence? |
| Chris Rea – Tell Me There's A Heaven Lyrics | 20 years ago |
This song is blatently about war and suffering. The little girl comes home from school and see's war and starvation on the television and can't understand it all. She asks her father why people do this to each other, whilst grampa says not to worry about it - they are in heaven now where nobody can hurt them. The father is then tied whether he should tell his daughter (the little girl) that what grampa says is correct and that "there's a place for me and you", and that everything that happens is part of some master plan - "to that great and joyful day". In the last but one verse it comes back around to the father himself doubting whether it is true. He is watching the suffering and wondering himself what it is all for - "don't tell that little girl, tell me" That's my interpretation. Great song! |
| Faithless – Don't Leave Lyrics | 20 years ago |

"Don't know how to write a love song" The irony! This is so obviously a love song! |
