i'm not so keen on the sound of this, but i do love the lyrics, and i appreciate the fact that bloc party do progress. too many bands stick to what they've done before and end up exhausting it. personally i find it pretty noisy, but i do sense that a lot of work's gone into it, and it is definitely original. it gets me when people just say they don't like something. even if it's not to your taste, it's so important to appreciate music from other aspects than that.
lyrically i really like it, because to me, it seems to be about everything not quite working out - it seems to capture that kind of inexplicable discomfort really well, just a general dissatisfaction. and i love the astrological references too. also when i first heard it, i thought it said mer-mercury, rather than my mercury - really like the idea of the actual version though i can't place why! |

have to commend jonwood1 too! such a good interpretation, i had a general gist but your analysis really helped :) my only difference is - maybe the 'satin for lining and a coating of pine' means a coffin? it's pretty morbid i know, but it could make sense. it's an incredible song, lyrically and musically it's so powerful. |

to me, this song is about someone not having time for you anymore; that to them, you're cold meat. you'd like to think that they are still interested in you, but you end up getting so desperate for them to show that interest again that you'll do anything for attention - any way they want it. then, all the bear has to do is click its fingers and you're there; but you're still all alone because they don't truly care. it's my best guess, at any rate, but probably not quite right! |

it certainly seems to be a song about life.. but also, something more specific in relation to that journey - the line "i'll make you want me" is sung so clearly and seems so simple that i think it must be something instrumental to the song's meaning. as if, she'll only be happy if he does end up wanting her. she'll give it all away for that, maybe? she wants to travel away her problems, but especially she wants to escape these feelings. but as ever, only speculation! |

to me, this song is about jealousy, and maybe disappointment too. she might be jealous that a man's affections lie elsewhere, and disappointed that whilst she feels something for him, he doesn't feel the same for her. her jealousy could be the green shadow, he could be the coldest that hasn't thawed yet.. you get the idea. though of course this is all speculation! |

I heard that Stipe wrote this song in response to the pro-democracy campaigns by students in China in 1989. Perhaps this was written to celebrate their success? However I think because the pro-democracy campaigns ultimately failed R.E.M. now feel Shiny Happy People is inappropriate and I think they've knid of disowned it! Anyone else heard this theory? Well, whatever the meaning is, it's a great song to listen to if you're in a good mood. |

I think that they don't sing 'in poison voodoo' but 'in boys and voodoo', as they're singing song titles and are big on self-promotion in songs..

I think this is a love song, but it's definitely not a happy one, it's very pessimistic. You can tell from the lyrics and the minor key. I imagine it as just like the original Romeo & Juliet story, but minus the tragic suicide ending and carrying on after that. Juliet's obviously dumped Romeo, and he can't understand why, he's tearing himself up about it. I think the song paints Juliet in a very bad light, and makes Romeo out to be the victim, which he obviously is. It also plays on the fact that Romeo & Juliet's first meeting was based completely on looks - "You can fall for pretty strangers and the promises they hold". Romeo ended up falling badly for Juliet, but she was never really bothered, hence the current situation.
The bit about the movie song perhaps shows how Romeo really wants to confront Juliet about his feelings but he never gets the chance to because he can never articulate them properly. I think at the end of the song he's still going crazy about her. The line "When you gonna realize it was just that the time was wrong?" probably refers to their warring families, which by this time have become friendly again. But she still won't go out with him because she never really loved him, just used him as a bit of a status symbol and by now has countless other boyfriends. Meanwhile Romeo is tormenting himself thinking that he can get her back...

I definitely see it's about a guy starting again, turning over a new leaf, but maybe - judging by the line not mentioned here "freer than you" (at the end) - in a malicious way. Either he has only thought about others before and it brought him little satisfaction personally so now he aims only to please himself, or he sees his fresh start as making himself better than others. There's certainly an ironic side, as MunkyMan said.
Also, the fact he keeps referring to how nature 'knows how he feels' makes it seem that he thinks he is as important and high and mighty as these things. The song at first seems to be hopeful but the subtext is malicious. In a way the song makes him seem really powerful in his arrogance and the music helps this. |
