| Spin Doctors – Mary Jane Lyrics | 10 years ago |
| Rick James used his "Mary Jane" to slip the word marijuana past the sensors and i always wonder if the Spin Doctors were doing the same thing in verse one with how they emphasize "if i can" in verse one because i always hear it as the f word. | |
| Tom Waits – Bottom of the World Lyrics | 12 years ago |
|
I've been thinking about this line since I first heard the track. My interpretation: The bishop represents religion. The barbershop liar (lie) represents societal constraints. So he's saying that he's an outcast, trapped (handcuffed) in his condition by those that adhere to social conformity. |

| Blackfoot – Highway Song Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| Yeah...the solo does sound conspicuously like "Free Bird". But hoonestly that is not the meat here. The draw is the guitar work on the basic melody of the song. As soon as this track comes on I'm in another world listening to that string work. Amazing, amazing guitars. Too bad Blackfoot couldn't duplicate this feat. | |
| Peter Tosh – Burial Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
One of my favorite songs by Peter Tosh but also I was confused as most of you to the actual meaning of some of the lyrics. I have seen it alluded to elsewhere and all but confirmed on the Peter Tosh documentary "Steppin Razor-Red X" this song is directed toward the One Love Peace Concert organizers and participants. This is the event where Bob Marley joined the two leading presidential candidates on stage and they all raised their hands together. Peter was notoriously against the organized politics of Jamaica at the time. He was invited to the event and performed but was openly defiant while performing and was critical of the audience. Look specifically at the lyrics "This man and that man, they are the same man. You thought of this just as well, that the rich man's heaven is the poor man's hell." That is a shot taken directly at Bob Marley and his actions at the concert. |

| Red Hot Chili Peppers – Readymade Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| When Anthony told John to clean it up I about shit myself. And then John follows it with an awesome solo. WOW! | |
| Peter Tosh – Burial Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| I don't know any official meaning for this song, but I always took it as Peter's lament about politicians. Jamacian politicians were constantly trying to recruit Peter Tosh and Bob Marley to their causes and while Bob was sometimes receptive to the benefits of political action Peter was often opposed. | |
| Stephen Lynch – Kill A Kitten Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
That's strange but makes sense. Lynch was really torn a new one by the American Humane Society for this. OMG...it's just a funny song. Lynch encourages you to donate to their cause via his website. |

| The Doors – Roadhouse Blues Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| According to "No One Here Gets Out Alive" Jim wrote this on the way to his home while Pam was driving rather erratic. Everyone was heading there for some partying and apparently behind the home (affectionately called the Roadhouse) there were several bungalows for guests. | |
| Neil Young – Mr Soul Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
One of my favorite lyrics ever... "Stick around, while the clown who is sick Does the trick of disaster" |
|
| Red Hot Chili Peppers – One Big Mob Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| My take on this song has always been that it is about the human race. We are "one big mob". A mix of actions and emotion, at once a beautiful structure and total chaos. | |
| The Monkees – Daydream Believer Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| I always had the impression the song was about a couple who has grown old together and despite the fire being gone they have settled into life and their love. | |
| Manfred Mann – The Mighty Quinn Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| Nice song. I prefer the Hollies take on it. | |
| Neil Young – Mr Soul Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
Interesting...I have it on Decade, but did not know it was a Buffalo Springfield song. So as far as meaning goes, is it Neil's self critique about fame going to his head? That's what it seems like to me. |

| John Prine – Illegal Smile Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| I stand corrected. My dad got the anthology which includes a book with a bio and meaning behind each song. Illegal Smile is not about drugs although Prine admits that potheads have taken it up as an anthem. | |
| John Prine – Illegal Smile Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
This song is absolutely about smoking weed. Look at the chorus..."You may see me tonight, with an illegal smile, it don't cost very much, but it lasts a long while, won't you please tell the man, I didn't kill anyone, no I'm just tryin' to have me some fun". Seriously, if that doesn't spell it out..."Fortunately, I have the key, to escape reality." This is one of my absolute favorite songs about marijuana. |
|
| John Prine – Sam Stone Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| My dad's explaination on "little pitchers have big ears" is a reference, one, to how children say the word 'pictures', two, "little pitchers" in reference to a picture of children, three, little kids with big ears. Prine is amazing. My dad is a HUGE John Prine fan. | |
| America – A Horse With No Name Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| SoundAndFury had the most concise answer. But I still think it's about drugs, specifically peyote. I was just listening to it last night when the idea came to me. He's decribing all these little things he's noticing (as someone on mescalin does) as he begins to trip. Of course the chorus... being out of the rain, you can remember your name... because you begin to reflect on your inner-self. He describes the trip (journey) as being over a course of days. By the ninth day!?!? He let the horse run free... he finally let go of his last inhibitions. A nine day trip? Only on mescalin. | |
| Johnny Cash – I Walk the Line Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| Well, I'm not sure how accurrate the movie was but according to "Walk The Line" (the movie), "Walk the Line" (the song) was written by Johnny about June after she had given him a good reaming. | |
| Steppenwolf – Magic Carpet Ride Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
C'mon....this song is definitely about drugs. "You don't know what we can find. Why don't you come with me little girl...on a magic carpet ride." It's a drug run!!! |
|
| The Beatles – Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown) Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
I always thought this song was about a young man's first sexual experience being with a prostitute. I thought the second half of the song was about masterbation. "She showed me her room, isn't it good, norwegian wood" - she took him to her bedroom and he started getting excited. "I was alone... so, I lit the fire, isn't it good, norwegian wood" - He's all alone thinking of the night before, gets excited and has to jerk-off before he leaves. I see way too far into this. |

| Neil Young – After the Gold Rush Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| I really like this song. It does make you feel nostalgic. Whoever said about the past, present, future theme...that seems dead-on. | |
| Neil Young – A Man Needs A Maid Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| I love this song. Neil is describing being bitter over a broken relationship. His attitude is that everything worth having in an intimate coupling can be more easily achieved by just hiring a maid to do it and then leave. | |
| Tommy James And The Shondells – Crimson and Clover Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| My impression of this song is that it is indeed about a young man's first experience with marijuana. He gets this great bud with red hairs in it, therefore...crimson and clover. The whole song is supposed to give the impression of being high with all the "wah" and mute effects. I could just be crazy. My dad is pretty versed in rock classics and he has no idea if my theory is indeed true. | |
