Tim Buckley – Song To The Siren Lyrics 8 years ago
The song appears to be using the common image of a siren enticing a sailor over to her, just for him to be destroyed in the rocks, so the meaning of the individual lines is affected (at least for me) by this image. Here is how I interpret the song meaning (from the "sailor's" voice):

Long afloat on shipless oceans
I did all my best to smile

--> I was lonely but I tried to get by

'Til your singing eyes and fingers
Drew me loving to your isle

--> Then I saw you and was drawn in by you

And you sang
Sail to me
Sail to me
Let me enfold you
Here I am
Here I am
Waiting to hold you

--> you encouraged me over, offering me comfort and love (an escape from loneliness)

Did I dream you dreamed about me?

--> Did I imagine you wanted me too? Perhaps this is one-sided love.

Were you hare when I was fox?

--> Am I pursuing you only, like a fox pursues a hare?

Now my foolish boat is leaning
Broken lovelorn on your rocks

--> Coming over to you has destroyed me. Love has destroyed me. You drew me into your trap.

For you sing, "Touch me not, touch me not, come back tomorrow:
O my heart, O my heart shies from the sorrow"

--> You didn't let me in or give love back, perhaps because you were scared.

I am puzzled as the newborn child

--> So now I'm confused based on the signals you gave me.

I am troubled at the tide

--> (I thought this was "riddled as the tide" which would imply the same as the previous line since riddled also means puzzled and the tide goes up and down.) Troubled at the tide implies that the the singer doesn't know what to do.

Should I stand amid the breakers?
Should I lie with Death my bride?

--> Should I continue waiting or should I give up?

Hear me sing, "Swim to me, Swim to me, Let me enfold you:
Here I am, Here I am, Waiting to hold you"

--> I'm right here, I love you

This last line is the same message as the "siren" originally gave the "sailor", but there is no more left to the song, which implies that the offer is not responded to.

Mumford & Sons – Little Lion Man Lyrics 9 years ago
It seems as though he is talking to himself in the versus, and to his ex lover in the chorus.

In the first verse, he is mocking himself. By referring to himself as a lion -- an animal that tends to be a metaphor for courage, strength, and pride -- and then telling himself to "weep for yourself", that he is isn't "brave", and that he is a "little lion man". The purpose of this verse seems to be to chastise himself for not being what he thought he was. He is ashamed of his past and he is not worthy of sympathy.

This is reflected in the repeating sentence throughout the song: "Weep little lion man", which is a way of mocking that he feels sad about it because he brought it on himself.

In the chorus he appears to be singing about the cause of this self-deprication to his ex, saying that it was his behaviour was bad (it was his fault), and that he should have been more considerate of her feelings. He now regrets it, and realises how much he's messed up.

The second verse has some more chastising. "You've seen this all before" implies that this isn't new behaviour, which further takes away from the idea that he deserves sympathy.

The interesting lines for me are "Your boldness stands alone among the wreck | Now learn from your mother or else spend your days biting your own neck". The first sentence presents an image of some guy standing pretty proud of himself amongst all the chaos he's created. He thought that being brave and strong would be good, but now that is all that's left. Everything is destroyed except that which destroyed it (his boldness). That's all he's got to show for it. The second sentence is a mocking one again. "Learn from your mother" undermines his status as a thinking adult; "or spend your days biting your own neck" brings to mind an image of a vampire sucking the life out of himself. Presented as choice, this suggests that either he goes back and starts behaving morally (as his mother taught him), or be his own punishment.

Meghan Trainor – All About That Bass Lyrics 9 years ago
But what about the "All about the Bass, no treble"?

The only thing I can think of is that Bass is "deeper". If not too much of a stretch, then this suggests that skinner people have less to offer. I'm not sure this is necessarily fair. But this post is about song meaning, not "fairness".

Birdy – Skinny Love (Bon Iver cover) Lyrics 9 years ago
Bon Iver said: "It’s about that time in a relationship that I was going through; you’re in a relationship because you need help, but that’s not necessarily why you should be in a relationship. And that’s skinny. It doesn’t have weight. Skinny love doesn’t have a chance because it’s not nourished.”

So, my own interpretation of the songs words, keeping in mind Bon Iver's own explanation:

"Come on skinny love just last the year"
--> Their love is spread thinly and fragile, but the singer wants it to last.

"Pour a little salt we were never here"
--> Like pouring salt on the wound or on soil to kill plants. I take it to mean that it just takes a little to make it all disappear (the skinny love) because it is so fragile

"Staring at the sink of blood and crushed veneer"
--> Veneer is a thin (protective) layer. In this imagery, the veneer is broken and alongside a sink of blood. It suggests to me that the singer is broken and/or has experienced pain when it comes to love.

"I tell my love to wreck it all, Cut out all the ropes and let me fall... Right in the moment this order's tall"
--> The singer thinks it should end, but in this moment, the singer also doesn't want that to happen

"And I told you to be patient" etc.
--> Seems to me the singer is suggesting that they warned their partner about the fragility of the relationship and that in order for it to work, they needed to be patient, balanced, kind, etc.

"In the morning I'll be with you but it will be a different kind"
--> As in, right now they're not ending the relationship, but it's also not going to be the same.

"I'll be holding all the tickets, and you''ll be holding all the fines"
--> This is evidence for the partner not being patient, kind, etc., since they seem to have issued "tickets" (like parking tickets but for bad behaviour in a relationship) for which the singer has to pay and make up for

"Suckle on the hope in lite brassiere"
--> I take this to mean that the singer is holding on to hope (suckling on hope), even though there isn't much left (the bra is "light", as in, not much to suckle). This all ties in with the "skinny love" - there isn't much there to get love from

"sullen load is full, so slow on the split"
--> Suggests that perhaps the singer is carrying resentment, but has still not split up with his partner. This ties in earlier with when the singer was telling his partner to "wreck it all" etc., because it should end

"And now all your love is wasted? And then who the hell was I?"
--> The singer seems to be expressing irritation as their partner's love having been "wasted" on them, and wonders what they even meant to their partner

"And now I'm breaking at the britches. And at the end of all your lines"
--> Like a puppet, the singer is going through the motions; the singer is being pulled by strings on their clothes by their partner. So it's like the singer's heart is not in it.

"Who will love you? Who will fight? Who will fall far behind?"
--> But if they end, who will they have?

Brandi Carlile – Before It Breaks Lyrics 10 years ago
Didn't know whether to choose "my interpretation" or "song meaning" since this is my interpretation of the song's meaning.

Seems to me that she's asking a lover or someone she loves to just make a decision about a possible long-distance relationship (and/or to tell her what the decision is instead of worrying about hurting her feelings). I'm drawing this conclusion from the contrasting lines:

Say it's over, say I'm dreaming (tell me whether the relationship is over or whether I'm worrying over nothing)
Say you'll wait, say you won't (tell me whether relationship will continue even when we're apart or whether it will end)
Say you love me, say you don't (tell me whether you love me or not)
I can make my own mistakes (stop worrying about hurting me)
Let it bend before it breaks (we can redefine the relationship before it's too late)

The 1975 – Sex Lyrics 10 years ago
Well. Since no one else has commented, I'm going to put forward three possibilities for the lyrics: "I love your friend when I saw his film, He's got a funny face but I like that because he still looks cool"

1. He means that her boyfriend has a funny face but didn't have enough space in the song to add the extra syllable, hence "I liked your friend ..."

2. Its from an actual and specific situation that he has personally experienced and so listeners will not be able to relate to this part of the song in the same way that they can with the rest of the song

3. It highlights that he wants to impress her by showing that he likes everything about her, even her friend with the funny face.

None of these explanations seem quite right but it's all I can think of so far.

Perfume Genius – Sister Song Lyrics 10 years ago
My interpretation is that the singer is dying or dead and is singing to some family member to keep on going until he/she comes back to them (his/her sister and the singer) at the end of her life.

I don't know what the emphasis on the sister is all about. Perhaps I'm missing something?

Mumford & Sons – Little Lion Man Lyrics 13 years ago
I interpret the 'bravery', 'boldness', 'courage' 'trembling' 'little' and 'lion' lyrics as references to the lion in the "Wizard of Oz" who is cowardly and scared.

I also believe that aside from the chorus, is talking to himself. With regard to the 'biting your own neck' bit - I think that's indicative of causing your damage to yourself with your actions, instead of the intended recipient. Also, if you consider the possible vampire reference, it could be describing how fruitless it is to gain certain things from yourself when you really need it from someone else.

NB// I believe that the lyrics are not 'rape yourself' but 'rake your self'

To take it verse by verse, I think the first verse refers to all the 'big man' gestures the singer made in response to problems in a relationship that were not real problems. The second verse seems to be about trying to solve problems that you yourself are the cause of and what seems a solution is really self-destruction.

The Enablers – Can't be Long Lyrics 13 years ago
I think this song is supposed to be ironic. The singer has lost faith in the idea of God and has resigned herself to giving it, ironically claiming that it won't until God remembers her. The idea is interesting because God, being loving and all-seeing shouldn't really 'forget'

The Ting Tings – That's Not My Name Lyrics 16 years ago
I thought it was about a girl who sleeps around and in the morning when theres "nothing to consider" they forget her name. The suggestion that she sleeps aroud lies in the lyrics "don't want to be a loner" and "four letter word (her name) just to get me along". She also sings that people think she's quiet but she actually goes around sleeping with people and is therefore a 'riot'. The kyrics "these heels they keep me boring
Getting glammed up and sitting on the fence now" suggest that its not enough to just go out coz she feels the same as everyone else, so she'll sleep with someone to feel different... until the morning when they forget her name. She does this to prevent here from being "So alone all the time at night". It can't be about school since "bird" and "darling" are predominantly used by guys to girls if they don;t know their name and the lyrics"Are you calling me darling? Are you calling me bird?" suggest this is what she is often called

Franco Battiato – Ruby Tuesday Lyrics 17 years ago
It has one obvious meaning and one that could be a different interpretation:

1) He's singing about a girl called Ruby (who left on a tuesday) because she wanted to be free and didn't want a 'name hung' (label) on her and that he's going to miss.

2) He's singing about a tuesday when Ruby hung herself hence all the death hints (eg, dying all the time; hang a name) and absence (e.g missing you and yesterday doesn't matter if its gone) and, in death, she's free

Damien Rice – 9 Crimes Lyrics 17 years ago
I thought that (since its the woman singing first) that they had already broken up and she doesn't want to be thinking of him or to have a new relatioship ('the wrong time for somebody new). When its his turn to sing similar lines he says 'cheating on you' as if even though they're apart it feels wrong. I dont think 'is that all right with you' is a sarcastic line at all. I think its genuine and touching.

The 'Give my gun away when it's loaded ... If you don't shoot it how'm I supposed to hold it?' is a metephor in that she doesnt trust her self with a loaded gun so she wants her partner (or ex partner) to shoot it so that its safe for her to hold it again. Maybe a metephor for closure (shooting down the relationship once and for all?) She gave her gun away (her love for him away) when it was loaded (when she still had strong feelings for him).

Any comments?

thats what i thought at first ... until she goes on about how she wants to feel a girl her age (lesbian sex really). The song is trying to convince her he boyfriend is sh** and a waste of her time. She trying to convince her to have a one night stand, and that she can teach her a few thing whether it be about life or about how to have great sex
"But I could show you,
a thing or two."
"Come back with me, and find out what you really want"

It could also very well be about dying as there are lots of reference to how time is running out and how he wishes it was easier than it is.
"run for our lives"
"Slower, slower
We don't have time for that"
"To think I might not see those eyes
Makes it so hard not to cry"
"All I want is to find an easier way"
"We're bound to be afraid"
... As well at the whole saying goodbye theme and making up for bad things happening.
"Even if it's just for a few days
Making up for all this mess"
"say our long goodbye"

Snow Patrol – Run Lyrics 18 years ago
I think its about two people who can't be together because the girl believes it isn't possible as they have different back grounds. The first few lines of the song is just him telling her that he loves her before they leave each other.
Although she doesn't believe in the relationship's potential, he does, "I know we'll make it anywhere"
He wish's she would tell him that she loves him too. And that they will go away together but she doesn't, "I can hardly speak I understand
Why you can't raise your voice to say"
they got little timeto think about things or to talk about them. He wants there to be a better way than them splitting but there's no time anymore. It has to happen, "Slower, slower
We don't have time for that
All I want is to find an easier way"

apart from that the chorus is just telling her he loves her and will always be with her. And he's tell her to be happy, "Light up" but its a play on words because to him, she always lights up a room anyway (with her personality or beauty or something smilar)

Bree Sharp – Boys of Summer Lyrics 18 years ago
This song is about youth and a young love. At first, I really didn't think so, primarily you can see its about wanting someone back but it has a deeper meaning than that. It should really be sung by a guy to make proper sense, but you can always twist the meaning. "The boys of summer" is a metephor for her past. Summer is his past. The best times she had were with the boys of summer. Her friends or boyfriends etc. "I can tell you my love for you will still be strong after the boys of summer has gone" means she'll still love him after all his best years have gone
"Nobody on the road, nobody on the beach ... the summer's out of reach..." etc. refers to how the past is over. "I'm driving by your house though I know you're not home" to her love being gone too.
"Out on the road today, I saw a dead head sticker on a cadillac" is a metephor for how things have changed too. A Dead Head sticker used to be a sign of rebelling and there it is on a nice car that a lot of people want; exactly what the sticker was rebelling against. It's ironic. It's not longer a sign of rebelling. It's now become part of the consumer world.
Ultimately, she doesn't want to look back to his love because that means looking back onto her past too. It's too late to look back kind of. But she can still see him. She still loves him

I have 2 theories. Both could be utterly wrong
I don't think its just about his girfriend being in hospital. It's undeniable he's singing about the at one point.
But I think its more a representation of how much he cares about her because he was always there for her while she was in hospital.
He mainly sings about how they are through and how in some respect he can't move on from her; "I felt you long after we were through"
i don't know.
It could also be that he's visiting an ex who he could never get over who happens to be in hospital. He could just have been visiting her. Say she is in a coma? He could just be saying this to her while she sleeps?
I don't know. Let it mean what you want it to.

Its about a woman being past her prettiset or her youngest "Bright eyes" refers to her past beauty and inner life. "Turnaround" refers to looking back. She's maybe just refering to an old love wishing he would hold her so that she can feel desirable again. that's why the video is so mad and full of school boys. Its all about youth and beauty and about it passing. Tru it can be related to anypone splitting up or feeling unloved or losing their love and feeling they need it all back but primarily i be;live the sonfg is abotu a need to feel beautiful and have your youth back again
"Every now and then I get a little bit nervous that the best of all the years have gone by"
"I'm always in the dark"
"Once upon a time I was falling in love
But now I'm only falling apart"
"Once upon a time there was light in my life
But now there's only love in the dark"
I also think this song has something to do with not knowing what love is when you're young and throwing it away but now she realises ho important it is

I always thought it was about the religious divide in Ireland. a real Romeo and Juliet sort of situation because he's in love with a girl on the other side, enemy religious views but in love with her non-the-less. He's simply fallen in love with soemone of the other religious view,

"You make me feel like dirt" : because of his religion
"I can't see much of a future
Unless we find out what's to blame" : Which is the right religious view?
"And we won't be together much longer
Unless we realize that we are the same" : Even though they love each other, their religion gets in the way, they both think they're right and it effects how they see each other

Bright Eyes – The Center of the World Lyrics 18 years ago
My interpretation: As she is metephorically referred to as a statue next to a well with nowt water in her bucket, suggests she (or her life) dried up before she could refill it (with water from the well). He refers to himself as a 'clumsy form' he hates (a general self loathing comment) and that she turned him into sand, likes lots of pother, she's destructive maybe ... someone whose lack of life spreads to others (negativity is contagious). He extends the metephor of goping into the sea (which is her terrible truth). Many meanings can continue to be taken from all this ... so I'll cut to another bit taht'll take less explaining. the woman who he is singing about ates her job, life makes her tired but whenever she sleeps, her dreams remind her of her pain in life and she can't sleep, so its a vicious cycle. She probabaly took sleeping pills because she coudln't sleep and overdosed. she was teh center of all her problems

The first verse uses the iceberg as a metephor for how she feels inside before meetign the guy or whoever she's singing to. Before she met him, she was as cold inside as an iceberg. The water aroudn her was free and generally (not being frozen and all) warmer. In the second verse, she's met him and she describes their relationship as two becoming one, flowing through each other "like water". (And hence warmer ... this is where "the fire fades away" is derived later on in the song) the rest of the song is about him going away and hence the warmth. "The fire fades away" means he fades away. There realtionship fades away. On a seperate note You're CLOSE ENOUGH to see that you'r on the OTHER SIDE OF THE WORLd to me, is some kind of oxymoron. Clever ;)

Muse – Stockholm Syndrome Lyrics 19 years ago
"Stockholm" in the title originates from a terrorist situation in Stockholm. It refers to the victims and the complete control the terrorists have over them. "Syndrome" in the the title refers to those victims who essentially fall in love with their capturers when they realise they have complete control over their life and do not want to leave. In this regard, the song refers to the 9/11 event. (Eg "And we'll fly, and we'll fall" etc.) It could also be about a relationship. "Stockholm sydrome" is a phrase which can be applied to any situation between a victim and someone in control. Again, it could be argued it is ab out both in one situation rather than two; it could be about someone speaking about their partner involved in the 9/11 catastrophy.
But hell, I don't really know

Muse – Muscle Museum Lyrics 19 years ago
The song name "Muscle museum" was derived from the dictionary. Because one of the meanings for this song is actually about the band "Muse" they looked up the meaning of muse in teh dictionary and saw the words muscle and museum on either side.
I think the song as two meanings:
One of them is the more popular idea that muse in the beginning weren't listened to in the beginning of their career. In the song they make references to these people who claimed they were rubbish. "I have played in every toilet but you still want to spoil it" and "too little much to late" and "too long trying to resist it you've just gone and missed it" etc.
The second meaning can be found in the form of ye olde love song of sorts. Muse seem to be singing to a man who wasted the time he had with his other half (or whatever you would like to call her) and then in other sections of the song (chorus) , they sing from her point of view; "I don't want you to adore me, don't want you to ignore me when it pleases you" and Can you see that I am needing and begging for so much more than you could ever give" etc.
wewll, there's my view anyhow
