It does sound sarcastic, but regardless - the fact it's so upbeat makes me smile. The fact Stipe is singing about someone so positively happy they're shining. But there again, conversely, maybe it is in all seriousness? Maybe it genuinely is meant to be a cheerful song. It seems to go against my expectancy i have established for R.E.M - most of their songs are deep, meaningful, and often sad. Something in me wants to believe that it's the black sheep. Strangely enough, i can see the relationship to drugs. I think i can safely say that i have no certain opinion on this song. |

Lmao. Who knows what it means. All i know is i want a song as creative and original as this played at my funeral. It's seriously difficult to read any other meaning into the words other than their literal meaning. If someone can tell me what a "coco jamboo" is, i'll be able to die happy. |

Haven't you ever had that weird feeling as if everything you've done has been done by someone else? It's about a person trapped within the realm of limited world, and is seeking to read different meaning. It's weird, that makes it a recursive loop for me. If he's trying to do something different, surely, wouldn't s/he think "why to bother? its been done before!"*. Nonetheless, it's a great song. I just love the last two minutes of it. *I cannot be held responsible for the emotional trauma caused by trying to decypher the recursive loop. |

This song isn't simply another "dont bother to feel" songs! Do you guys not read lyics in their entirity? Read the lyrics, and indeed the title of the song! "Sweetness Follows"; "Live your life filled with joy and thunder.". To me, this song is about a someone who's seen their fair share of downs, and in the past has considered suicide. "Listen here my sister and my brother what would you care if you lost the other?". It would be nice to say it's simply laying their parents to rest (traumatic in itself), but i believe its more than that. Notice how after the first time the song says "Oh, Sweetness Follows", it quickly changes to describing how lifes little downs can pull you under, and suggests you should live your life with joy and thunder?. Although it says "we were altogether, lost in our little lives", i believe this talks of a mateship; whilst we're all humbled by what's beyond this life - we're not alone. Thats my spin on it, anyway. |

To me its definately about the deminishing, detiorating relationship. It speaks of someone who is gradually falling out of of love, and feels as if they have no control over their emotions - "are you accidentally part of Some involuntary movement here?". Both in the relationship thought it was strong enough, and simply stopped putting in effort. "We could do it with our arms Tied behind our backs". It continues to describe the inability to feel for a once blooming relationship -"So i stopped and i can't...Can't start again" The rain pouring down, being symbolic of tears shed over a disintergrating relationship - and being described as a simple joy - a simple way to relieve ones self of tension, anger, saddness - or any negative emotion. If you follow the "hole in your roof" metaphor further, the image of the same person, standing beneath the spot where once he had been crying, and now seeing sunshine; seems to suggest the person is considering leaving, ignoring the problem - simply being happy. Come to think of it, haven't we all had a relationship like this? haha. |

| To me, the song is about seeing things, and about the way in which you want to see them. Everyone has a different perception of something. Whilst some consider a shark to be vulgar or intimidating - they dare to percieve them differently. Also, "to see his memory from different angles" could easily be interpreted as a person reassessing their own memories, and seeing something in a different light. | |
