What's great about this band is the fact that they could write a song like this all the while not being particularly above the things the lyrics seemingly mock or criticize. At least, that's the impression I got when I met Greg Ginn.
As illustrated here, lots of people think of Black Flag as purists who lived like punk rock Buddhist monks; safely walled off from mainstream culture, trying not to be corrupted by any populist contaminants, immune and indifferent to the mainstream, etc. Fact is Rollins was a huge pop culture nut (he loves Madonna and several other very un-punk artists), Ginn liked plenty of "surface" classic rock like Hendrix and Black Sabbath, and Black Flag's catalog is full of party anthems and songs about partying and getting wasted. |

| Daniel Johnston – Spirit World Rising Lyrics

I feel that this is one of Daniel's more striking songs-the arrangement is very sparse and the lyrics touch on several themes that have appeared multiple times throughout Daniel's songwriting career. This song also provides a pretty direct window into Daniel's psyche, referencing his religious beliefs mostly. The Abilene reference refers to his first stint away from home, when he went to and subsequently quit Abilene Christian University in Abilene, Texas. The passages mentioning the New Jerusalem, number 7, forehead and hands, and defeat of the devil all reference Bible eschatology and touch on Daniel's lifelong obsession with certain numbers-he speaks frequently of the numbers 6 (Satan), 7 (Jesus/God), and 9(the Beatles as best I can gather). |

A member of the armed forces supporting the war and calling liberals pussies. How odd! These are the INTERNETS after all, so we have no way of knowing if you're telling the truth.
And yeah, members of my family have died in wars. A few of their names are on some funny black wall in Washington DC. My grandpa has lost his brother in World War II. World War II was worth it because the Axis Powers had a fighting chance of invading the homeland US. What history would like you to forget is that those Democratic Pussies you love to hate were actually the ones in favor of getting involved in World War II. War happens. When it's justified, it saves lives and protects people. When it's based on bullshit *coughIraqWarcough* then it serves no purpose.
If it hasn't been proven enough times yet, this war is equal parts bullshit and worthless. Afghanistan is where the problem should have been dealt with. Had the fighting force we've amassed in Iraq been in Afghanistan, Al Quaeda could very well have been a distant memory by now. |

I don't buy this shit about Dave being a reformed man one bit. I read an interview a while ago (shortly after he had his little meltdown over "Some Kind of Monster") where he was bragging about having fucked Kirk Hammett's girlfriend shortly after being (rightfully) kicked out of Metallica. He then queried of Kirk: "How do I taste?". How sweet of him.
And yes, Rethorn makes a good point. Backing someone because of their religion instead of their policy is dark-ages bullshit and anyone who does it loses my respect. I spent the first 18 years of my life in the Greek Orthodox Church (I was an altar boy and everything), but I'm not perfect. As such, correct me if I'm wrong when I say that I'm having trouble finding the Bible verse that says "Thou shalt go forth and cutteth taxes of mega-rich tycoons and those most likely to sendeth American jobs overseas". As a matter of fact, I could have sworn that the Bible spends a pretty good amount of time scorning the rich and greedy while showing sympathy for the poor and glorifying those who give to them. When it comes to pre-emptive strikes that come up empty-handed in the end, I'm pretty sure I remember "Blessed are the peacemakers" rather than "Blessed are the bomb-droppers".
When talking about homosexuality in the Bible, references are truly few and far between. Sure, it's an abomination according to scripture, but the same book (Leviticus) also condemns shellfish in the same way. If you've been to Red Lobster lately, you'd best drop to your knees. |

Anyone who likes this song is legally retarded. Period. Just hearing it will give you a stroke, I know this because ;kljdfa !@$12435!$#^
What a dumbass. Does he know that "Mr. Bush" allowed members of the Taliban to visit Texas during his governorship? Obviously not, otherwise he'd have written songs defending him for it. |

Idiotic rabble-rousing crap for and by the dumb half of the United States. I know all about it because I live there. Thanks to morons like Toby Keith, Anne Coulter, Bill O'Reilly, Rush Limbaugh, Swift Boat Veterans for Bullshit, and last but not least George W. Bush, this country has adopted several borderline imperialistic idealogies and strategies that are going to hurt us severely in the long run. I hope you simpletons swell up with pride in fifteen years when our Republican Congress has used the power you unquestioningly let them take and turned us into a full-blown surveillance/police state.
I saw one braindead jerk-off on the first page mention that we shouldn't question the government and let them go about their business silently. If he/she ever reads this, I'd like to send out a giant "fuck you" to him/her for not only harboring the most patently un-American idealogy that exists, but also for no doubt doing his/her part to make sure that Texas/Oklahoma/Nebraska/Iowa/Missouri/whatever shitburg he/she lives in was "Bush Country" again last fall. I'm sure the founding fathers, the writers of the Constiution, and all the true patriots who shaped this country would too. |

Although I can understand why it would get on some people's nerves, I like this song. The instrumentation is interesting in that dissonant Sonic Youth way, and I love Kim's bratty delivery. I doubt any other band could make this work. |

| Slayer – Dittohead Lyrics

A feeble stab at revealing how "immoral" the American Left Wing's approach to justice by rattling off a series of uninspired cliches that were frequently slapped on the Democratic party during the 1990s courtesy of a band that spent the first half of its career writing about Satanism, sacrificing virgins, and necrophelia. Slayer have never been known for great lyrics, and a bunch of insipid ABABABABAB forced rhymes is all that's to be found here. The title is clumsy enough and reflects Slayer's not-so-thorough knowledge of modern politics: as Death Disco mentioned, "dittohead" is a term used to disparage fans of Conservative windbag and all-around douche Rush Limbaugh. Maybe it meant something different in 1994, perhaps a more general term to insult idealogues in general. Well guess what Slayer, o great muses of our age: it's 11 years later and conservatives are the ones stealing elections, obstructing justice, invading sovereign nations on faulty or downright false pretenses, changing the rules to suit their own agenda, and promoting blind obedience through it all. And GodHatesACoward? Right-wing policies only offer people greater freedom in theory. We aren't seeing much of that in practice anymore. |

This song is the result of the long, agonizing process in which Dave Mustaine decides which environmental/political/social issue to pretend to care about this week. His advocacy of conservation and environmental protection continues to this day, as he has gone on record as having voted for George W. Bush's re-election. That is not a joke, sadly.
Cool bass riff(s) in the beginning, though. That last, somewhat dissonat "thunk thunk thunk thunk" part at the end of it is totally unexpected. All in all, I think that Junior was an integral part of Megadeth's sound and...oh wait, Dave doesn't want anything to do with him now either. |

| Megadeth – 1000 Times Goodbye Lyrics

The hidden meaning in this song is obviously an allusion to the eventual test of personal limits faced by us all accomplished by one Dave Mustaine who took on the task of probing the exact number of cheesy cliches one can squeeze into a single song; apparently, he got the closest a songwriter can get without risking molecular instability. Pretty brilliant. |

| Megadeth – The Conjuring Lyrics

A classic from the first golden age of Megadeth. The lyrics obviously describe some kind of occult or perhaps Satanic ritual, the inspiration probably owed in part to Mustaine's dabbling in witchcraft during the first successful incarnation of the band. Here is an interesting quote regarding Dave's occult involvement in the early days:
"I read the Satanic Bible and all that stuff, but it was so adverse to what I wanted, and it hasn't been until the past couple of years that all that stuff's been shaken. I've had to go through a lot of spiritual healing to get clean. I don't think people really realize how intense that stuff is and the marks it can leave on you. There was one time where I did some witchcraft on this guy who had punched me, and it physically affected him, and to this day I regret it. That will never leave my mind - the power of that stuff. I would rather light a candle than curse the darkness. There was a time when I was very comfortable being part of the darkness because I didn't understand the light. But now I like seeing people smile more than watching them wrinkle up their forehead and make the devil's sign. If half these kids only knew that the way they make the devil's sign really means 'I love you' in sign language anyway." |

Bad cover off a pretty bad Megadeth album. Since "So Far...So Good...So What!" represented the height of Dave Mustaine putting most of the record company money for recording and producing their albums up his nose, the general sound and quality of material on the record suffered. There are definitely a handful of changed words on this song. |

Oh poor Dave, got kicked out of Metallica for being a violent, drunken a$$hole. No, James Hetfield wasn't the major cause of Dave Mustaine getting booted out of Metallica; rather it was Mustaine's drug abuse, alcoholism, and violent temper that caused him to get the boot. James was actually heartbroken about Dave's necessary departure because their musical chemistry was very good and they were basically brothers but I guess that's gone to sh*t as of late since Dave is once again busy badmouthing them at every opportunity for showing him in a position where he might look halfway human in "Some Kind of Monster."
And yes scorp, this song being about Chris Poland hocking Dave's equipment for dope is straight from the horse's mouth (Dave himself) and as such is likely the most accurate interpretation available. |

Ok, sorry for the errors in my previous post. I deleted a line and I forgot to fix it. Here's how it should read:
I am in no way suggesting that this is the actual meaning behind this song, I simply found the following coincidences interesting, so don't flame me:
Although the relationship is far fetched, some parts of this song remind me of a part of "Lord of the Flies." To avoid explaining the plot and symbolic intricacies of the book, I'm going to assume most of you know the basic plot details. One of the strangest scenes in the book involves a freshly killed pig whose head has been impaled on a stick, left as an offering to a "beast" that is feared to be sharing the island with the stranded schoolchildren. The pig's head "talks" to a character named Simon who has odd perceptive abilities and says that this particular "beast" is inside them all and is not a feasible, actual being. This could relate to the "there's a lot of things I hoped you could help me understand" line. After Simon actually finds the "beast" the children are afraid of to be a severely malnourished parachutist who ejected onto the island, he immediately rushes out of the woods and is killed by several of the other children who are caught up in the fervor of a tribal dance of sorts, hence the "lost my shit because of you" line and perhaps the "black and blue and broken bones..." portion. |
