Dr. Dog – Army of Ancients Lyrics 6 years ago
This song really grew on me, the more I listened to it. My two cents on lyrics:

"The oceans and forests could collide into one
And mar this world with a spark" ..Kinda reminds me of a disaster, be it natural or otherwise.. Think "big bang" on a grand scale

"How did the fox get the raven to crow(fox and the crow), why did the hen pick grains in the snow(The little red hen), why did the brother bury his gold(The miser and his gold), man took the rats but the kids came along(Rats of Hamelin), why did the mouse help the beast with the thorn(The lion and the mouse) These are all fables. Not all Aesop's, but "and the moral of the story is..." fables.

The way I look at this song, is the singer looking at life and watching everything happening and passing by, good and bad, knowing his actions may or may not affect the outcome, and wondering when the shoe will drop on said outcome. Everything comes to an end eventually. When will it stop? What should we do until that happens?

Dr. Dog – Dutchman Falls Lyrics 9 years ago
First off, the lyrics above are all wrong. If you get the volume just right, you can hear it clear enough:

"Out in the cornfields, beneath the hangman's tree,
is a rock, some initials and beneath it is me.
I need all of your forgiveness and most of your love,
you see, the hangman you saw hanging, well that wasn't who I was.

But nobody noticed, nobody cared but me.

Well i knew she'd been unfaithful, but he knew she had to pay
so I grew more like him with each passing of each day
and I slept out on some side road; I thought things i'd never dare
so I went to the tool shed and put shellac in my hair.

But nobody noticed, nobody cared but me.

Well I came to Dutchman Falls with my hatchet and my dog
Well she must've raised her head, I must've cut her down just like cake.
You know the man I was, he left me long enough and strong enough to sin.

Now rage, it were a virtue
and pride, it weren't a sin.
I have no need for redemption.
I have no need for him."

This song, to me, is almost split personality, or just building enough anger inside to commit something you'd never normally do, sort of like a blind rage. In the beginning, he's at the hangman's tree near a rock and some initials. He's in agony, he's asking for forgiveness and love. I assume he made the initialed rock in memorium he made for his dead wife. And then he relives how he did it. He was faithful to her, she cheated on him, and his inner self, be it jealousy or rage(or a bad conscience even), caused him to begin thinking about making her pay.

He grew into his rage by continually thinking about it and ended up sleeping alone, outside, plotting to kill her, then going to the tool shed to get a hatchet. The "Put shellac in my hair" line is basically making his outer appearance different than what it usually is, maybe further turning into his rage persona. Shellac is a super shiny resin, so it could have just been a word for greasing up his hair to look different. But there actually is a shellac hairspray, so it could've been just that! He probably invited his girl to the falls, and chopped her up there in a blind rage, claiming the man he used to be( the nice guy) left long enough to allow his rage to do the job.

The very end, and I went over it a bajillion times, is correct in my version. The changed tone, the eerie calm, makes me believe he likely became his rage persona and abandoned his former self. "Rage it were a virtue and pride it weren't a sin" is odd grammar but I partly blame it on the new person he's become. I think that line basically means Rage, or himself, was a virtue. it saved him from suffering. "pride weren't a sin" gives me the impression he believes that being proud that he did it isn't bad because she's gone and he isn't hurting anymore because of her actions. "I have no need for redemption, i have no need for him" is saying that he's not looking to redeem himself by admitting what he'd done or turning himself in, and he has no need for the weak man he used to be.

The thing that gets to me most of all is the line "But nobody noticed, nobody cared but me." So all the while even before he knows she's cheated, when he's slowly changing and suffering and becoming a monster and changing his appearance and essentially getting ready to kill his wife, nobody noticed or said anything at all. Only person who cared about anything he was feeling or doing was him. Poor guy.

The PAper ChAse – We Have Ways to Make You Talk (The Human Condition) Lyrics 11 years ago
I agree with caboose, and I will add that I also believe the song has a lot to do with fear, extreme emotion, lying and turning on one another.. All human conditions. Basically, through out the entire album, we see natural disasters and at the same time we see human interpretations of these disasters, in a way. The disaster is paired in title with a human condition. All human caused and spread. As for this song, several parts stick out to me:

Are you smelling flowers, and looking around for the gardens, or are you smelling flowers and looking around for the coffins?"

I think of this line as "glass half empty, glass half full" to extremes. On one side, you have your average person looking at life through rose tinted glasses. everything can be changed for the better, everything has the potential for goodness. "Things will get better over time." On the other hand, You have the overly paranoid and fearful person who doesn't trust and is always waiting for the bad things to happen. "Things will get worse over time." Optimism and pessimism.

"The sheeps are with our wolves"
You've all heard of the term "Wolf in sheeps clothing", right? This makes me think of infiltrators.. Either used to gain trust and then attack, or perhaps to quietly instill fear in a group, or even to spread lies or convince the majority to do something they wouldn't normally do or that they are against, while feeling their future choices are right, since they are all one equal group, or "all sheep here". "Sheeps can safely graze" might mean the group has no idea anything is sour, even though they've changed their normal habits (The chorus changes from "Bags of blood here waiting", implying if anything bad happens, there is a lifeline to save them all, to "There is blood for breakfast lately, 'cause why not, we're all doomed?" which implies a drastic changed behaviour and mentality, without questioning or concern as to why.) The sheep feel safe, but in reality are quite vulnerable.

The wolves could loosely be interpreted as government, the sheeps can loosely be interpreted as the mass of people against. "We have ways to make you talk" and "So sign your petitions and go on to your meaningless marches" sound like a major looming force that may be intimidated by the masses but do not show their fear, and also have ways to bring them down from the inside (Again with the wolves vs/ sheep).

"There is no beauty that can be obtained- When all you got's a shovel, everything will look like a grave" could possibly be the middle ground. The people who are aware of corruption, who see the wolves in the crowd, but feel they are powerless.. The cogs in the machine. They have the power to fight with their knowledge, but are afraid of the consequences, so they remain shut-lipped. The observers as opposed to the fighters. "There is nothing I can do." This can go along with "Someday this will all be yours, we're gonna get what we came for, to whistle past the graveyard". Essentially I think this is the belief that someday everything will be okay, and the middle-grounders have the belief that even in staying out of the ordeal, the "right side" will prevail and the outcome will be better than before.

"someday this will all be yours" can be the promise from either side; The side of wolf or the side of sheep. It's the hopeful mantra of the clashing of sides. But on the same spectrum "Baby clams (Just a nickname, i'm sure), you thought you could have it all... and it'll bury you all" is the wolf looking over the hole it's dug for the sheep over time (Time catches up with us all. many protests/historical events/corrupt circumstances go on for years without any change, and sometimes are forgotten about or swept under the rug entirely) and yet still promises a good outcome for the sheep as it's burying them alive. "Someday this will all be yours.."

Tool – Right in Two Lyrics 13 years ago
The lyrics about fighting never added up to what I hear when I listen to the song. The lyrics that I hear, while they may not be correct, are:
"Fight over cloud over earth over sky
They fight Over love over blood over hell and light
Over love over sun over flood
They fight or they die over one for uprising!"

I agree that the song is essentially about the angels ridiculing man(monkeys) for fighting to claim everything which isn't theirs to begin with. The lyrics i've posted can add backing to the notion, ridiculing the causes people fight for to begin with. The last line really hooks me. They fight or they die over one for uprising. I can imagine the "one" being Jesus who caused an uprising and was crucified for the behaviour. And now these confused monkeys are fighting in the name of that one up-riser but are truly no better than the ones who had slain him.
Also, dividing/cutting in two can be seen as destroying something, sharing something, or creating something (Cells dividing in two.) So the division can be bad, good, or neutral. Just depends on how the monkeys choose to divide.

Syd Barrett – She Took A Long Cold Look Lyrics 13 years ago
I don't necessarily think the song is about Drugs, nor do I think it's about the Floyd. Many people think all songs are about drugs. Sure, some artists take to drugs to make amazing songs, but I don't believe all songs, whether the artists is or isn't on a substance, would be dedicated to said drug. Lyrics are like poetry, it's deeper than that. It's in the artist's psyche. Saying it's simply a song about a drug is incredibly shallow.

My take on this song, is that it's about a girl that he pines over and idolizes, and who in turn rejects him. He is frustrated and doesn't understand why she doesn't return his affection, as he's spent much time with her. Perhaps she's sending mixed signals or she strings him along. Finally he thinks over why he continues to stay in this sort of situation, and looking inside of himself he decides it is best to cut ties with this girl and move on.

She took a long cold look at me (An awkward or angry look, "at me", perhaps she doesn't like his personality or him in general)
and smiled and gazed all over my arm (..but quickly smiles as she looks him over. maybe a strictly physical relationship?)

she loves to see me get down to ground (Getting down to ground gives me the impression that he's apologizing a lot for things that aren't necessarily his fault.. Getting down to ground could be equivalent to begging for forgiveness so she'll stay with him.)
she hasn't time just to be with me (..She is usually only with him if among others, he wishes to spend more time with just her.)

her face between all she means to be (If her face is "between" something, it could be that her face hides the truth, like a mask. Her mind thinks one thing, her face/expression filters what she means, and her mouth speaks something entirely different. Perhaps leading him on even though she doesn't fancy him.)
to be extreme, just to be extreme (It is an extreme mentality and he doesn't understand her actions)

a broken pier on the wavy sea (Something broken on turbulent waters that is still standing.. He sees her as a strong independent person but also is sympathetic because he is aware of what she's been through)
she wonders why for all she wants to see... (This could be that she wonders "Why can't I be like ____", or "Why can't things be different?" Maybe he's coming to the realization that she doesn't want to be with him.)

But I got up and I stomped around (He's frustrated. Maybe he feels inadequate or ignored)
and hid the piece where the trees touch the ground... (I feel like "The piece" could represent his heart or his feelings. he wishes to bury his feelings.)
The end of truth that lay out the time
spent lazing here on a painting green (He thinks over the time he's spent and how it's amounted to nothing. The end of truth is the end of trying.)
a mile or more in a foreign climb
to see farther inside of me. (He reflects on an uncomfortable subject- which is moving on. Looking into himself, being in deep thought, contemplating his options and outcomes.)

And looking high up into the sky
I breathe as the water streams over me... (The "broken pier on the wavy sea"? He's walked past and into the water. In other words, he's left the "broken pier" behind, and is treading into uncharted waters. He's moving on.)

Just my two cents. Take it or leave it. Peace. C:

Gorillaz – Rockit Lyrics 18 years ago
I think it's about songs, actually. and how most people dont really pay attention to lyrics or the meaning behind a song, so much as liking the song for sounding good or being popular. I mean come on, even this song is a hit for those who have heard it, and the words mostly consist of "blah blah blah blah blah". Nobody cares about how 2D is feeling, what he'll do, where he's been(I'm feeling very blah blah, I want to blah blah blah).. As long as the song sounds good, the meaning doesn't matter to people. It could also be picking fun at the new style of music, where most lyrics mean nothing. Analogy of the song being about a lobotomy is utter crap. "Lobotomy pop" along with "Tazar yoot" were on shirts 2D has worn. As far as the zombies go, don't you guys do your research? I think they were taking a stroll in their backyard, the landfill. Zombies live there, right? It would make sense.

Gorillaz – El Mañana Lyrics 18 years ago
I doubt this song is about war or God. You think Murdoc would really tolerate a song about loving God? By watching the video, the song makes me think about love being lost. Or even.. the hope of love being lost. In demon days, I noticed too alot of songs had to do with love in one respect or another. While most songs in DD also have to do with war though(aswell as the sun shining through), I still don't believe that's what this song is about. I also believe the lyrics are wrong on this site. I always thought 2D Sang " ..If you do then I'll be sworn to find you... *chorus*" instead of "If you do that i'll be someone to find you".. Just doesn't make much sense- as well as a few other random words I've noticed dont match up with these lyrics. Anyways, Great melancholy song. My opinion In following the videos for Feel Good INC and El manana together, both videos seem like this forbidden love deal. Not to mention out of all the band, didja notice how restless and uncomfortable 2D seemed compared to everyone else in feel good INC? Russel had his drums, Murdoc had his women, Noodle had her guitar and windmill. Like he knew something bad was gonna happen.

Bah, I don't know. That's all just my opinion. But Stu and Noodle are awful cute together, and yeah. The videos made me think about that more than anything else.

Rent – Finale B Lyrics 19 years ago
I'm glad Mimi didn't end up dying. When I listened to La Bohéme, I was devastated when poor Mimi died. I think her living in RENT just gives a flicker of hope to those who've watched it. I think instead of leaving the show saddened, you instead leave feeling inspired. No day but today, right?

Rent – Seasons Of Love Lyrics 19 years ago
You people complaining about this song have got some major issues. What's so horribly wrong about it? It's music. Get over it if you think it's shallow. I love the song, and I think it can relate to anybody in any situation. You just have to listen to the lyrics to understand. It's a question to anyone: How do you measure a year? It's beautiful, and it makes you think.

Rent – Light My Candle Lyrics 19 years ago
"She's asking Roger to light the candle so that she can do her drugs. And her stash are the drugs she's going to take. That's why she's shivering - because she hasn't had her drugs." ~BrainStewed74

I find it funny how everything on this site revolves around drugs... even though drugs are plainly mentioned in RENT.. haha. Your comment makes no sense. Her candle was already lighted when Roger was singing his "Glory" song.. She blew it out as an excuse to get into Roger's apartment. She throws her stash under the table as they sing "Light my Candle".. If she was just asking to have her candle lighted for drugs, she would have left right when he lit the candle. She wouldn't have kept stalling to get closer to him.

As for the shivering, It could have been a combination of not taking her drugs or from the cold. The freezing was mentioned in "Rent" as "..How can you generate heat when you can't feel your feet, and they're turning blue?" Oh well, i'm not starting arguments.

This is a great song. One of my favourites. I love Mimi. =3

Albert Hammond – It Never Rains In Southern California Lyrics 20 years ago
I can't believe anyone hasn't given this song a comment yet. I absolutely love this semi-depressing yet upbeat sort of song, and it deserves much more credit. As for it's meaning...

In my opinion, it seems like a young ambitious man moves to southern california. Hearing so much about fame and success plus his own wishes to be successful drove him to drop everything and move there.

Without a job or any sort of experience, he flounders, and wishes he were home instead of here- where he barely gets by living, let alone eating or sleeping.

He either writes to friends or they visit him, and he asks them not to tell his family that he didn't make it. He asks not to tell them how they found him, which could perhaps mean that he's homeless now, etc.

This song reminds me of what every young adult fears, not becoming successful in life.. The metaphore for 'It never rains.. but it pours.." makes me think of him saying " Well, it's never bad in southern california, but they never tell you that it always get's worse before it gets better."
I don't know. I love this song, though. I hope others will post respects after I do.

..Perhaps this song hasn't been commented on because there isn't a possible drug reference? Oh, wait. nevermind. You druggies will somehow find a reference to a drug just to ruin the song. Oh well. It was nice while it lasted.

Toto – Africa Lyrics 20 years ago
I am against the claim that it is about slavery. That's just like saying a song about china is all about child slave labour. Can't there be a song of appreciation about another country other than ours?? Anyways, I absolutely love this song. I don't care what it's about, or whether it has any meaning. A truly beautiful song in it's own right. Although, I always thought they sang: "I missed the rains down in Africa". I also thought the lyrics sounded more like "..Sure as Kilimanjaro rises like a leopress above the Serangetti". Y'know, Like a leopress rising up to roam her territory among the serangetti. Oh well. I'll stick with my catchy lyrics. =D

Dude. No analyzing needed. I saw her in concert and she explained it. She simply said "This is one of my dirtier songs, all about sex!(chuckle)." It was actually banned from some radio stations just because of that reason. There is no other inner meaning to the song. Trust me. VC would know. she wrote the freakin' song!

Pink Floyd – Any Colour You Like Lyrics 20 years ago
I hate how people refer instrumental songs(other than classical) to 'trippy drug' songs. You have got to be kidding me. If you watched any documentaries of the band, they never once said "H*ll yeah, man, we made this sweet cd for drug addicts." They actually have explained the meaning to each of their songs, even the instrumental ones. You have to be sober to fully understand the meaning, children.

Just the random sounds, title names, and beats to the whole DSOTM album explain alot. When I was in high school, our teacher made us analyze the meanings of the songs, and I understood it much better. The album is basically about growing up, enjoying life before you die, and even though you know you are going to die, and you have faced several hardships already, you've got to lighten up in order to truly enjoy your years on earth.

Grow up kids. This song and album wasn't meant to be bashed by immature people. By the way, drugs kill.

George Michael – Father Figure Lyrics 20 years ago
Yeah. As to the comments about him singing to a guy, I do believe, myself, that the song was intended for girls. I do know that Michael was gay, and I have no problem with that. He had not openly admitted he was gay until the 90's, though, and this song was made in the mid-80's. He has sung alot of songs that were directed towards the opposite sex also. The song, relitively speaking, makes more sense to me if it were directed towards the opposite sex. As for the song's meaning, I am not that analystic about things. I just know I love the song. The song, also, strongly reminds me of the 80's miniseries, 'The Thorn Birds' whenever I listen to it. Listen to the song, and watch the movie. Is it just me?
