System of a Down – Cigaro Lyrics 18 years ago
Most of these comments have been Most of these comments have been directed solely at the United States as a nation, a criticism we deserve for allowing the cigaro smokers to take over so comfortably. They've been led in on a path of roses since 1913. IMO, this song is not about the US, at least not alone. On the contrary I think it deals with the cock-weilders, the cigaro smokers. The idea of "sucking up" (sucking off) the Cock of Big Money (not just big business), is not the whole truth - the Cocks referred to in this song are RAPING the American Government, and they are "screaming for more".

"We're the regulators that deregulate
We're the animators that de-animate
We're the propagators of all genocide
Burning through the world's resources
Then we turn and hide"

They are not talking only of the US, they are speaking of the power WORLDWIDE that regulates everything behind the scenes. The stooges in the American Government cannot afford their cigaros w/ out being regulated, animated and made to propogate upspeakable acts of violence (yes, even genocide). They are being whored-out, and they are loving it. The problem is that now they are whoring us (the citizens) out to support their pimpdaddy... and we are all burning through the worlds resources to support massive, collective (oil, safety, power) addiction.

Tool – Right in Two Lyrics 18 years ago
I read an interview w/ MJK in Revolver.

"On our last few albums, there's been more of a metaphysical, attemt-to-open-your-third-eye kind of approach, having faith that people will find a way to expand their consciousness and wake up to the world they live in...but I think I've lost a little faith watching the whole political thing... if there's a theme to [10,000 days] it'd be 'Hey, you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink. I have witnessed this firsthand - and therefore, you're on your own."

That interview definitely coincides w/ the feeling I got from listening to this album, an angry "well, fuck this" response to monkies' vicarious viewing of monkeys killing monkeys.

Tool – Right in Two Lyrics 18 years ago
Thirdeyewide, I find the irony most appropriate. As several have mentioned, this very forum has become a verbal monkey-war zone. I think it illustrates beautifully the concept of this song and Tool's lyrics in general. Basically, Maynard has spent so much energy confronting his own upbringing and surroundings (the faith of his mother and her congregation) and constantly repeating the mantra of "breaking through" the film of this existence and its monkeywars. At the same time, he seems to be angered by our (and his) general inability to do so - as demonstrated so perfectly by this forum. That's why (IMO) he tends to write from such an outside, 3rd-person perspective (angels watching) much of the time; he's trying to provide the vision of something better for both us and himself.

thirdeyewide - The answer to your question about why we (assuming you mean posters on Tool lyrics) always arrive at Christian bickering, is that so much of what Tool is *about* is Christian/religious bickering. Their lyrics and attitude reflect not only railing against Christianity and religion itself, but also at its followers, for arguing amongst themselves to the detriment of the whole World (among other faults...). It only makes sense that that spirit and attitude would permeate the musings of people who spend countless hours focused on their music.

Radiohead – Idioteque Lyrics 19 years ago
"What bunker? I don't see any bunker. This looks like a discoteque to me. I can do whatever I want, whenever I want, in here. This is heaven! I can laugh until my head comes off! Come-on, pass me some more of those pills, oh so good..."
"Come along now, that's right, go inside. Women and children first...it's safe in there, you'll have so much fun..."
"But isn't there an ice age coming? I'd like to hear both side of this..."
"Keep it moving, right along now, that's right, women and children first..."
"No need to fear, we'll take care of you, we're not scaremongering, this is really happening, but keep moving, go right inside, it's loads of fun..."
*Ring*Ring* - My God, no! Not little Johnny, my dear God why, no! *Ring**Ring* What?! It's all gone? You can't be fucking serious! It's all gone? I'm ruined!"
"That's right, keep moving, come along now, into the discoteque, that's right, you can calm down in there. Women and children first..."

Modest Mouse – Satin in a Coffin Lyrics 19 years ago
There are some secondary metaphors here. "Like satin in a coffin" - You have the "like" aspect of what the "You" on the floor is. "Satin in a coffin," however, on it's own, is a wordplay. Satin: luxury, refinement, wealth. what good is it really if it's lining a coffin? In other words... "You're lying there looking (sounding) pretty, too bad you're dead" or "What you're saying sounds so pretty, so good - too bad it's bullshit (hollow)." Same goes for the dissolving into coffee phrase. Usually sugar disolves into coffee, it's sweet, but dissapears, dies, dissolves. MM seems to have an anti-material bent, what good is anything? Air, oceans? But I think that they're double-edged, why complain, just enjoy it, enjoy the satin, the sugar - even if it is all just ending in death. What's the point of being depressed over the inevitable? MM might have struggled over that for a while... I think this album deals w/ that struggle in part.

A Perfect Circle – Passive Lyrics 19 years ago
Far be it from me to assign meaning to a song, however, to myself this song represents an anti-religious stance, as many of MJK's lyric intrests do. Feeling and context seem to point out a reaction to the "turn the other cheek" mentality. He's obviously speaking to someone, the Christian mentality of passive-aggressive resistance. He wonders why, if the things spoken for by the Religious Right are so true, that they clam-up and won't turn and face the questions they're asked; about these beliefs and ideals that don't stand up to questioning, they thrive on comatose mental states and unquestioning belief. "THINK FOR YOURSELF, QUESTION AUTHORITY" - This seems to be MJK's mantra, why should it be different in this song?
