The Police – Every Breath You Take Lyrics 20 years ago
It makes me laugh when empty-headed red state denizens use it as their wedding song.

Genesis – Abacab Lyrics 20 years ago
You folks assuming a musical reference are correct. The title refers to the musical structure of the song. But what about the lyrics? I think it's Phil's answer to Peter's "Grand Parade of Lifeless Packaging" in that people will respond to anything formuliac and familiar.

Genesis – Mama Lyrics 20 years ago
Clearly, it's a prostitute. But wouldn't it be creepy if it WAS about mother? Or am I thinking about The Police?

Genesis – Man On The Corner Lyrics 20 years ago
I just remember growing to hate this one as it was played every half-hour on the radio when it came out. Now I think it means we are all lonely men on the corner waiting for something, ala "Nowhere Man"

Genesis – Supper's Ready Lyrics 20 years ago
This to me is deeply spiritual. I agree it can have different meanings depending on your current state of mind, but here's mine: Losing connection with a loved one (that can be a spouse, or your version of a higher being). Loss of belief. Then a wandering around through life. this is like most of us. We start out as children believeing blindly in love and faith, grow up into young adults and grow cynical, cold, doubtful freaks, then, if lucky, find a redemption somehow, somewhere. This is a common theme in many movies and books. I think this may be Gabriel's take on it.

Genesis – The Light Dies Down On Broadway Lyrics 20 years ago
This song is about choices, plain and simple. Rael has gone through hell and not yet back. He has a chance to return to NYC, but his brother John who has betrayed him several times over anyway by this point, needs his help. Helping him means Rael doesn't go home, but he saves his brother and in some way, maybe redeems his own miserable life as a street thug.

Genesis – The Grand Parade Of Lifeless Packaging Lyrics 20 years ago
We love this song. It was true in 1974 and true today. Essentially, it is a comment on how creativity has become compromised by cookie-cutter products that people blindly buy (empty in their fullness) because someone told them to through tricky adverts( dishing out failsafe superlatives).

Also, I think there is a sneaky little parallel to John Lennon here. In the story, John is Rael's brother who happens to be a real jerk. By 74, this sentiment was strongly felt by many toward John for either leaving the beatles for Yoko or for disappearing pretty much all together. And lest we all forget John's admitted obsession with the number 9...
