| Ani DiFranco – Two Little Girls Lyrics | 18 years ago |

I love the first two lines: "You were fresh off the boat from virginia i had a year in new york city under my belt" This metaphor for differing sexual experiences is amazingly clever. She is such a talented lyricist. |

I love this song, the lyrics, the horn section, the upbeat ska feel of some of "Little Plastic Castle". I think regard has it right. The song's focus on setting shows that the time and place is as important as what's going on in the bar. It perfectly captures the feeling of being drunk in a dingy student bar, with a partner who is a philosophical drunk (the interlude about the "world of possibilities") or just plain boring (cobwebs from your elbows to the table). I think Ani has written in the past about the theme of hating boredom and depression (which summarizes her fellow bar fly in this song). In "Pick yer nose" she says something to the effect of "Depressed is boring." I think "Not a pretty girl" she talks about how she relates to people -- other leftists?-- who wouldn't be caught dead working for the man (not unlike the philosopher in the song) but at the same time she is a patriot and a worker first and foremost. In both that song and Deep Dish she distances herself from the disillusioned left. Something to think about. |

| Tegan and Sara – Freedom Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| I love the lyric "I don't do no sing alongs with my freedom". It's like a big "fuck you" to patriotic conservative fuckers. But it probably doesn't mean that at all. | |
| Le Tigre – My My Metrocard Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| One of my favourite le tigre tunes. It's about getting up, getting out, and taking in and taking back NYC. | |

| Björk – Pluto Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| "but she said it was actually about drinking alcohol" - lol, i secretly thought it had something to do with that given that she says she'll "be a little bit tired, tomorrow, but brand new". | |
| Björk – Where Is the Line Lyrics | 20 years ago |
|
"My purse wide open you ask again I see the crime and cash into Accounts Everywhere" I'm wondering if the use of the word "crime" gives the song a more literal meaning, like she is actively engaged in some kind of wrong-doing, doesn't want to, but is still pressured? |

| PJ Harvey – Working For The Man Lyrics | 20 years ago |
| A lot of PJ Harvey's songs stem from the persona of a prostitute, a sort of ultimate down-trodden woman. This is one is literally from the point of view of a man looking for a prostitute from night to night, but he is also a man of god. its amazing how there are so few lyrics but the song says so much... it could really be interpreted as saying anything given the two facts in the song: (a) the prositute/man and (b) that the man worships god. It could easily be trying to portray the hypocrisy of religionists calling worshippers and non-worshippers alike "sinners". Or it could simply be trying to portray the dilemma in a man's mind, the dilemma of whether to be committed to women (sinning) or God. Or maybe there is no dilemma since the exploitation of women and the selfish proclamation that one is doing the bidding of God, goes hand in hand. Either way it feels like PJ harvey is letting us secretly watch an event in all its irony. | |

| Ani DiFranco – Parameters Lyrics | 20 years ago |

I get that it's about rape, but what do these 2 lines mean? "as you walk him step by step back to the door having talked him down off the ledge of a very bad idea"... Say the main character in the song has already been raped by her intruder, why would she walk him back to the door? And what bad idea is being talked about here? am i missing something? |

| Radiohead – Paranoid Android Lyrics | 20 years ago |

I'm not sure if someone's already mentioned this or not... but has anyone noticed a possible metaphor to William Golding's Lord of the Flies? The entire song has references to it. The character "Piggy"; "When I am King..." (aka the ruling kid among the kids stranded on the island); I am sure the line "Off with his head man, off with his head man" was in the Lord of the Flies; and: That's it sir, you're leaving, the crackle of pig skin, the dust and the screaming The yuppies networking the panic, the vomit... God loves his children..." They killed and cooked a pig on the island in LOTF; there is a reference to yuppies which can be the kids and the seperate groups or networks that formed, and "God loves his children" is a sarcastic reference to the fact that these kids were stranded on an island where they slowly started killing one another, etc., etc. |
