OutKast – Rosa Parks Lyrics
|
ironically, the real Rosa Parks didn't care for the song--she didn't like the fact that they made the song without asking her, and especially disproved of a song with her name on it including profanity. She took legal action, but I'm not sure what ever came of it. |

OutKast – Return Of The "G" Lyrics
|
after ATLiens, Outkast were portrayed as a tough guy(Big Boi) and a freak (Andre), which they didn't like. Andre would later say, in an interview with Muzik magazine, that his most hated misconception about Outkast is "that Big Boi's a thug and I'm crazy." |

The Dandy Warhols – Solid Lyrics

when he talks about "old town" he's referring to a section of Portland, OR with that name...I think. It would make sense given that DW are from Portland. |

Nine Inch Nails – Burn Lyrics
|
seeing as this was written for Natural Born Killers, it is most likely a reflection of Mickey's feelings in the movie. He explains his ultra-violent behaviour by claiming that he is a next stage in human evolution, toward being a natural born killer. The outsider/observer status of this song seems to confirm this. |

Björk – Headphones Lyrics

This song was written by Bjork and Tricky--I'm pretty sure it's about them falling asleep to each other's music. |

Björk – Pluto Lyrics
|
much of Homogenic in general had an angrier sound to. I remember reading in an interview somewhere that it's somewhat of an aural representation of this Icelandic cultural myth about the world getting to a place where it needs to be destroyed, and "Pluto" representing the climax of that. She went on to say that "All is Full of Love" is beginning of the rebirth of the world, and that thematically, it's really more in line with Vespertine, which is about this rebirth. |

Björk – I Go Humble Lyrics
|
the music to this song is originally from LFO, "Shove Piggy Shove". Bjork has been a longtime fan of LFO, and wrote the lyrics to "I Go Humble" after hearing the song. She also worked with Mark Bell (the man behind LFO) on Homogenic, Vespertine, and Medulla. |

My Bloody Valentine – Sueisfine Lyrics

it's interesting to observe that MBV, band who would completely abandon decipherable lyrics a few years later, rely so heavily on the "sueisfine/suicide" world play. |

Public Enemy – Black Steel in the Hour of Chaos Lyrics
| 18 years ago
|
the song is pretty obviously about a wrongfully imprisoned man breaking out. The "black steel" refers to a handgun. There repeating piano sample in the song comes from a solo in Isaac Hayes' "Hyperbolicsyllabicsesquedalymistic" (try saying it...one time clearly). |

Pop Will Eat Itself – Nightmare at 20,000 ft. Lyrics
| 18 years ago
|
there is also a famous episode of The Twilight Zone called "Nightmare at 20,000 Ft." While the song is about a crippling fear of flying/a plane crash, the TZ episode (starring William Shatner) is about a man with anxiety problems who sees a gremlin-like creature on the wing of a plane, taking about the engine. He ends up breaking through the window and shooting the critter, which no one else is able to see, and is taken to a hospital after the plan lands. As the camer pans away, however, we seen that the wing was genuinely damaged by something...
Given that PWEI are big fans of TZ, it's highly likely that they purposefully titled the song this way. |

Pop Will Eat Itself – Can U Dig It? Lyrics
| 18 years ago
|
as is obvious, this song is about things that PWEI dig. Here are some explanations of some of them:
The Twilight Zone: cult classic science fiction TV show from the 60s. The famous theme to the Twilight Zone is sampled in "Def.Con.One".
Marvel: comic book publisher
D.C.: comic book publisher
Run-DMC: one of the first rap groups to achieve mainstream popularity in the mid-80s.
Renegade Soundwave: classic dub group
AC/DC: rock band
Bruce Wayne: the public identity of superhero Batman.
Dirty Harry: famous character protrayed by Clint Eastwood.
Terminator: the James Cameron movie starring Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Alan Moore: comic book writer. The PWEI song "Def.Con.One" is about his graphic novel "Watchmen."
"Riffs? Yeah! Can U Dig It?": This line comes from the cult classic movie "The Warriors". The sample of a radio announcer saying "okay, let's get down to it boppers" at the beginning of the song is also from The Warriors. The Riffs are the biggest gang in NYC in the movie. This is the way they respond to their leader.
Optimus Prime and Galvetron: two characters in the Transformers.
"The Leader of the Pack": song from the 50s about a motorcycle hero who wins the heart of the girl singing the song and then bites it in an accident.
"Do Run-Run": Beach Boys song.
Spinderella: DJ for hip-hop girl group Salt N Pepa.
Bruce Lee: legendary martial arts actor
"The Bad and the Ugly": truncated from the full title "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly", a movie starring the aforementioned Clint Eastwood.
"V for Vendetta": a graphic novel by Alan Moore.
"Into the Groovy": not sure what this one is; all I can think of is a song by Sonic Youth alter-egos Ciccone Youth. |

Pop Will Eat Itself – Ich Bin Ein Auslander Lyrics

this one is about hostile British attitudes toward foreigners--the song title translates to "I Am An Outsider". PWEI were involved in the anti-Nazi movement in the early 90s. |

Pop Will Eat Itself – Everything's Cool Lyrics

not sure what this song is about, but the music samples heavily from "Thieves" by Ministry (the single version even includes the same vocal samples of someone gasping from "Thieves"). |

Ween – Birthday Boy Lyrics

This song is about Gener confronting the fact that, while he has had a painful breakup with a woman, he still cares for her. A more cynical sequel to this song is "Baby Bitch", on Chocolate and Cheese. |

Pop Will Eat Itself – Def Con One Lyrics
|
This song is about the graphic novel Watchmen by Alan Moore (comics and Moore were popular with PWEI and appear in other songs as well). "Big mac, fries to go" refers to a point in the graphic novel where a character is eating just that before the end of the world. |

Pop Will Eat Itself – Inject Me Lyrics

This song concerns a sexual activity popular among certain more adventurous circles at the time. Two people would fill up syringes with heroin fixes, have sex, and then try to inject each other while having a simultaneous orgasm, to achieve ultimate levels of ecstasy. |

Spiritualized – The Twelve Steps Lyrics
|
A bitter, cynical look at drug treatment programs. First, Jason Pierce criticizes them for being crutches for the wealthy. He compares drug treatment to just another expensive fix, but one that doesn't work as well as drugs. The final list is his own, mocking twelve steps. |

Spiritualized – Cop Shoot Cop Lyrics

The first line is talking about heroin addiction, a common theme on this album. The rest of the song is kind of vague, but some interpretations say it's talking about a failed drug deal (?). |

Spiritualized – Home Of The Brave Lyrics
|
This song is about dulling the pain of unrequited love with drugs. The whole of the Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space album delt with Jason Pierce's broken heart. In this song, he references cocaine, heroin and alcohol as temporary reliefs, but acknowledges that he's going to feel like shit again once he comes down. |

Ween – Baby Bitch Lyrics
|
From the lyrics, it can be inferred that this song is about an old lover. It's directly related to "Birthday Boy", one of my personal favorite Ween songs. In that song, he tells a lover that, even though they're separated, he still feels for her. In this one, he realizes that she was just a bitch to him anyway, so screw her. |
