Green Day – Maria Lyrics 16 years ago
I believe the line is "Somebody shot the president/And no one knows where the reel went", thus completing the pun.

Electric Light Orchestra – Sweet Talkin' Woman Lyrics 17 years ago
The obvious name-check of Communication Breakdown makes me want to think that other parts of the verses are references too, but then again, probably not.

Electric Light Orchestra – Can't Get It Out Of My Head Lyrics 17 years ago
Chicane is a word, but I don't think it's used in the sense of trickery here. Rather, I think it refers to the crest of a wave.

Squeeze – Vicky Verky Lyrics 17 years ago
Well... not quite, I think. Maybe I'm wrong. Here goes.

I think it goes, they fuck and they're happy together for some time. Then, the guy gets screwed into comitting heavy amounts of theft for some Robin Hood-type reason, gets sent to juvenile hall, and the girl's mother scolds her for getting involved with him in the first place (note "He said that he was forced to..." and "If she'd have known the story, she would have been so sorry"). Then while he's wasting away there, they write back and forth and realize they're not going really be able to continue their relationship. Fortunately, unlike the song's direct ancestor (Up the Junction), this story ends on a positive note, with the two reconciling during the summer.

R.E.M. – Shiny Happy People Lyrics 18 years ago
I don't think it's meant to be sarcastic or anything. Remember, this is the same band that did "Stand".

Neil Young – Journey Through the Past Lyrics 18 years ago
It may be a rehash of After the Gold Rush, but it sure is nice.

Alice Cooper – Under My Wheels Lyrics 18 years ago
I'm fairly sure "under my wheels" is supposed to be a double entendre.

KISS – 100,000 Years Lyrics 18 years ago
The live version really does seem to last 100,000 years.

submissions
KISS – Rock Bottom Lyrics 18 years ago
It's a cool song, but the intro is a blatant Alice Cooper rip (Desperado).

R.E.M. – Superman Lyrics 18 years ago
"Strange" from Document was the Wire cover.

Anyway, there's not much interpretation to be done here, I think.

Blue Öyster Cult – Career Of Evil Lyrics 18 years ago
Patti Smith wrote the lyrics, as she also did on some songs from Agents of Fortune and Tyranny & Mutation. I'm pretty sure most of the songs from the album, save Subhuman and Astronomy, weren't written with the Imaginos idea in mind, but it sort of relates anyway.

David Bowie – Watch That Man Lyrics 18 years ago
Bowie's record company originally wanted him to tone down Ronson's overpowering guitar, but they decided it sounded better the way it was. An extremely underrated song of Bowie's... and it's the lead-off from Aladdin Sane. How can no one remember this song?

Frank Zappa – Muffin Man Lyrics 18 years ago
Zappa named his recording studio the Utility Muffin Research Kitchen, but I think it may have been after the song rather than vice versa.

After Bongo Fury the song was usually medleyed live with a fast-tempo Camarillo Brillo, but there's nothing else really notable about the song I can recall.

Frank Zappa – Bobby Brown Goes Down Lyrics 18 years ago
Keep in mind around '78 or so was a completely tasteless period in Zappa's discography. The statements are more just meant to be humorous rather than biting like in early Mothers music. Look at Jewish Princess or Broken Hearts Are for Assholes from the same album (Sheik Yerbouti) and you'll see what I mean.

Frank Zappa – Don't Eat The Yellow Snow Lyrics 18 years ago
Album version is a scant two minutes and has the lyrics you see here. The single version has parts of Nanook Rubs It as the last guy said. The most notable live version runs 20 minutes and has all four parts of the Apostrophe medley, plus some audience participation I believe.

R.E.M. – Bad Day Lyrics 19 years ago
The song came out recently, but it was written a while ago - it was the prototype for It's the End of the World As We Know It.

submissions
Sex Pistols – Belsen Was A Gas Lyrics 19 years ago
It's just a funny pun, get over it.

David Bowie – The Man Who Sold the World Lyrics 19 years ago
You're a huge idiot if you think Nirvana's cover was good.

submissions
Blue Öyster Cult – Don't Fear The Reaper Lyrics 19 years ago
The point of the song is that love lasts beyond death.

submissions
Blur – The Universal Lyrics 19 years ago
I believe I read somewhere it's supposed to be about a futuristic drug similar to prozac, like StellarPerception was talking about.

Oasis – Lyla Lyrics 19 years ago
This song just reminds me of how good Oasis used to be and how much they suck now.

Elvis Costello – Oliver's Army Lyrics 19 years ago
RMATE had it right. It's about Oliver Cromwell.

submissions
David Bowie – Dancing in the Street Lyrics 19 years ago
For the record, this is a Martha and the Vandellas song, which Bowie covered with Mick Jagger. I personally like the cover better.

submissions
The Beatles – Baby You're a Rich Man Lyrics 19 years ago
This song sounds like it has a heavy sarcastic tone.

submissions
The Rolling Stones – All Down The Line Lyrics 19 years ago
The first thing this song reminds me of is cocaine.

submissions
The Rolling Stones – Dancing with Mr. D Lyrics 19 years ago
Yes. Mr. D is death, in this context.

submissions
The Rolling Stones – The Last Time Lyrics 19 years ago
If I remember right, this is the song that the Verve played backwards for "Bittersweet Symphony," or whatever that song was. Anyways, the Verve is full of dickheads, and this is one of my favorite Stones songs.

submissions
Cat Stevens – Angelsea Lyrics 19 years ago
Funny song, but good. Reminds me of mythology for some reason.

submissions
The Flaming Lips – Fight Test Lyrics 19 years ago
"and secondly if vanilla ice can get away with it with that cheesy excuse"

To my knowledge, I don't think Vanilla Ice actually did get away with sampling Under Pressure.

I like Cat Stevens a lot more than the Flaming Lips, but this song is decent anyway.

submissions
Blur – Globe Alone Lyrics 19 years ago
The song is poking fun at people who buy into all the hip, cool fads out there and strive to maintain a perfect image, but lose their individuality in the process.

For some reason, this song reminds me of Charmless Man.

Red Hot Chili Peppers – Give It Away Lyrics 19 years ago
Yes, he talks about this song in his biography. To put it bluntly, "It's better to give than to receive."

Does anybody else love the drums in this song, especially in the beginning?
