Along Comes Mary has a catchy rhythm and sharp lyrics whose meaning is just a bit evasive. Because I wasn't a pot smoker when this song came out - it never occurred to me that the song was about cannabis or the drug scene. Years later, though, I came to know a girl - Mary, of course - who I couldn't help but associate with this song whenever she was around. Mary was a shy, unremarkable girl when we first met - but she grew into a vivacious, carefree, and self-confident young woman. I remember that it was a delight to spend time with her but such a downer whenever we had to part. |

I am well into my 60's and grew up listening to all of the great styles of music from classical, swing, jazz, country, rock n roll, soul, r&b, to (now) new wave, and whatever. If there is a more tender, bittersweet love song than These Eyes - I haven't heard it. The song gives me chills whenever I hear it played. Written and most often performed by men - the lyrics are, nevertheless, perfect for either male or female voices. I have to admit that this song takes me back to a time in high school when I was dating a really nice girl who seemed to have a preference for another guy. So, the best I could hope for was to be her #2 love. This song captures the soul-crushing anguish felt by just such a young, passionate suitor mired in a scenario where implied promises have been broken and hopes dashed. The song reminds me of how unrequited love truly sucks. |
