They Might Be Giants – Particle Man Lyrics 19 years ago
Hey everybody!!! Flatland is so old it's in the public domain! Look it up on the net (Project Gutenberg has two copies) and we'll all listen for the collective DOH! when you "get" it.

Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young – Almost Cut My Hair Lyrics 19 years ago
I wore my hair in a very long ponytail for years and because of this song I felt like I was selling out when I cut it off . It still haunts me evey time I go to the barber. I guess I still want to let my freak flag fly.

Elvis Costello – Veronica Lyrics 19 years ago
Talk about contrast! A wonderfully light tune with a heartbreakingly sad lyric. Not to mention the irony of creating an unforgettable hook for a song about someone with Alzheimer's disease.

Elvis Costello – Everyday I Write The Book Lyrics 19 years ago
I got the tongue-in-cheek element right away, but parody is a fine line to tread and you run the risk of either being too heavy-handed or having your point lost. Mr. C. downplays his talent. There are thousands of people in the world who would give almost anything to be able to create this kind of tune, let alone be able to sucessfully parody the form. Sure it's pop music without his usual bite and insight. It's just that artistic snobbery keeps him from being justifiably proud of a well crafted pop tune. Even one that lets you in on the joke whlie still being able to stand on its musical value alone.

Yoko Kanno – Gravity Lyrics 19 years ago
Here's another song where the brilliant Ms Kanno shows she can do more than write just about any kind of music. The lyrics are haunting and use double meanings so well. Tears dilute but can they also delude? When things are so serious you feel the weight of the world on your shoulders. You long for weightlessness. Zero gravity = no cares.

Todd Rundgren – Chain Letter Lyrics 19 years ago
This is a tongue-in-cheek response to all the criticism he got from feminists for the lyrics to "We Gotta Get You a Woman". It's an early example of his wit and his habit of including at least one humorous song on almost every album.

Todd Rundgren – Born To Synthesize Lyrics 19 years ago
Todd was getting into eastern religion about the same time he was experimenting with the early electronic music synthesizers. I guess it seemed a natural fusion. I still remember seeing him perform this on The Midnight Special solo and acapella, before the song was released, complete with video effects to accompany his wildly modified voice.

Todd Rundgren – Baby Let's Swing (On Original Runt) Lyrics 19 years ago
This isn't the version on the original Runt. The short version is. This variation was on a misprint. Ampex Records had large numbers of a bad pressing (the wrong master tape had been sent to the pressing plant) and decided to recoup their losses by dumping them in the discount racks.

It's a song about the famous 1960's singer/songwriter Laura Nyro (Eli's Coming, Stoned Soul Picnic, Wedding Bell Blues, And When I Die). The tune and the arrangement are a wonderfully funny parody of her songwriting style. A lot of Todd's early music was stylistically influenced by both her and Carole King. I bought the misprint version with the long version and didn't find out that it was original intended to be edited into a three song medley until years later when Bearsville re-released the original..
