| It seems obvious that this song is directed towards Yoko but for years I've thought it was also meant for Paul's ears too. | |

I enjoy reading interpretations of this song; the weirder the better. So I'll add mine. The part in the chorus: "So Bye-bye, Miss American Pie Drove my chevy to the levee But the levee was dry. And them good old boys were drinkin' whiskey and rye Singin' this'll be the day that I die This'll be the day that I die." When I hear this I'm reminded of the murders of the 3 young civil rights workers in Mississippi, I think their names were Goodman, Schwerener and Cheney but I might be wrong. Anyway, they were grabbed up and either killed and their bodies carried in a pick up truck or tied and carried in a pickup to an earthen levee on the river bank where they were then killed and then their bodies buried in the leevee. I'm not saying that that is what it is about but everytime I hear the chorus I imagine the picture of them in the back of a Chevy pick up being driven by the drunk good old boys who were threatening to kill them (and did) and then burried the bodies in a levee. |

Great song! Spector's greatest work. Eric Burdon and the Animals did a nice cover it in 68 on the Love Is album. The guitarist on it was Andy Summers, later to be the guitarist in The Police. If I remember correctly on the Animals version, in that bridge part he sings; I love you baby like a flower loves the spring And I love you baby like Aretha Franklin needs to sing. And I love you baby like a school boy loves his pie. And I love you baby river deep and mountain high. |

| I read that Graham Nash says this song was inspired by Mick Jagger's then girlfriend Marianne Faithful and he just changed the M to a C. I love this song. | |
| The Beatles – Helter Skelter Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| In Feb., 1967, Brian Wilson was writting for and producing a non-Beach Boy recording project. One of the songs he was working on is called Teeter-totter Love. I wonder with Paul dropping in on the SMiLE sessions in April, 1967 if that song title might have been mentioned in some talking and over the months might have partly been an inspiration or spark for Helter Skelter. | |
| The Beach Boys – Sloop John B Lyrics | 21 years ago |
| I read that this song is based on an earlier arrangement. The lyrics come from a poem based on a newspaper article from the 1930s about the wreck of the ship being found. A musician from a symphony orchestra (I think it might have been from a Chicago orchestra but I can't remember for sure) set the poem to music. The Kingston Trio did a version of it but in earlier versions that line "the worst trip I've ever been on." becomes "the worst trip since I was born." I prefer the Beach Boys' lyrics. As much as I like this song I think it sort of disrupts the emotional tone of Pet Sounds. But still, it's a great version of a good song. | |
