"I'm invited in for coffee And I give the dog a bone" - For the Americans here who dont know, "The Dog and Bone" is cockney slang for phone, so give the dog a bone could mean phoned someone. But I think its a bit of double entendre, as to "bone" somebody is slang for to have sex with them (I imagine thats the same over on your side of the atlantic) and the dog could be referring to the insulting way of referring to women (I've seen enough TV to know thats the same over there) so maybe he means he had sex with the girl. Maybe. There is absoloutly no overall meaning to this song, so dont bother looking for one, just thought I'd explain that little bit. |

In awnser to your comment aaronsicedcoffee, if Jesus were alive the sort of people you say the Killers write about are exactly the sort of people He would be mixing with, for as He says (to paraphrase) its not the healthy who need a docter. In fact, a glance at the New Testament will tell you Jesus was against the way people of His day insisted on judging others as if they had any right to. Theology lesson over. As it happens, it does seem like this song has religious undertones. No, annoying American atheist-liberals (before the American religious right think I'm with them, i find you lot even more annoying so dont get your hopes up), that does not mean I think that every song ever written is about Godbothering, but it does mean I think this one is. Not even every song by the killers (as aaronsicedcoffee points out, they cover a wide range of issues) but again, just this one. I wont bother repeating what other people have said, but the Biblicle references they were able to point out are too numerous to be co-incedence. |

It is just a song of rebellion, against the racist state and its agents. Yes anarchism can be anti-capitalist, because in an anarchist state (in theory) everything would be produced in communes which would work out of pure neccecity rather than being profit driven. Che Guevara was not the saint he is often made out to be, but was still a good man. He did preside over heavily biased 'trials' immediately after the revolution, which did result in a lot of killings. However the people being tried were ex-agents of the old dictatorship and frankly would more than likely have received the same punishment had the trials been by a jury of their peers. It must also be noted that Che had personally witnessed the socialist regeme in Nicaragauna (I cant spell that) fall because the U.S.A had it overthrown from within by aiding and abetting a coup by funding all the old regemes generals and police commanders and just helping them out however possible. Che was not willing to let that happen to Cuba. None of that neccerily makes what he did ok, but it does explain it. Since the death of Tupac rap as a genre has really really become far too commercialised as "Gangster rap" became the mainstream pop genre it is now and lost all its social commentry to be replaced by the "I'm Richer Than You" Rap we see now. Hip Hop has been dying for something like this to come along and put some real meaning back into it. To dismiss an entire genre offhand is idiotic I myself am a Catholic and have always assumed this song would only really have meaning for fellow Christians, but it seems, after looking at this site I was wrong about that Although Born2bastar mayhaps could have worded it better, he did get one of the sub-themes of this song. Opression of the black folk in America. To angrily say "Get the fcuk over slavery" ignores the huge social, economic and political effects that period is still having on the lives of so many african americans. Of course to pin the blame on all the white people in the world is just as rediculous. I hope Jesus walks with us all. |

Ok everybody, Comrade_Liar is here to (despite his name) dispense a little truth and tell you all what it means once and for all. The original was sung by Otis Redding, and it was basically Otis telling his woman "You can damned well do what you want when I'm aint about, but I wear the trousers round here and you Will respect me in my house!" Aretha heard it and decided to do the womans responce to Otis' song, which I spose means this could be seen to be a Womans' Equal Rights song. (The best example of this is how in the original song Otis says "And I am about to just give you all my money" but in this Aretha says "And guess what?/So is my money", as if to say she dont need her man to support her, she's earning her own way through) However beyond that it is not a civil rights song. Aretha's woman in this song is saying that no she aint as bad as Otis makes out (In the original Otis says "Do me wrong/Honey if you wanna/You can do me wrong/Honey while I am gone" to which Aretha replys "I ain't gonna do you wrong while you're gone Ain't gonna do you wrong 'cause I don't wanna") but if he wants to make this relationship work, he better buck up his ideas in the bedroom. She is basically agreeing to give Otis the respect he wants, if he can give her the "respect" she demands between the sheets. (What did you think "Whip it to me" meant?) She also warns him at the end that if he cant give it to her, she'll find someone else who can (which is the whole of the last verse really) A classic song by the all time Queen of soul. As a side note, next time I see Beyonce described as the Queen of Soul, I will become very very unhappy. |

Well I am suprised nobody has picked up on this, but the video is a clear reference to Dr Strangelove, which gives a definate suggestion as of to its meaning. Dr Strangelove is about an accidental nuclear war and eventual world wide annihalation, brought about by the bumbling incompetency of the American and Soviet militairy and political leaders (It's actually a comedy, which seems odd given the subject matter eh?) A lot of that film takes place in the War Room, which is wear Muse are playing in the video. With all the people sitting round being just as insane and rediculous as they are in the video to this song. All of which leads me to believe that this song is expressing dissapointment and lack of faith in the political establishment, but acknowlagement that we're stuck with them. At the same time, he's warning them he wont let them get away with a "Dr Strangelove" where all life is destroyed ("I won't let you bury it/I won't let you smother it/I won't let you murder it"), except those few who are pushed underground into mine shafts. It would also explain the title, as for most of the film there is the ever present fact that they are running out of time to stop the bombers and prevent the Doomsday Machine going off. |

Ok I just saw an excellent programe on BBC about Sam Cooke, and it explained this song in good detail. Sam Cooke heard the song "Blowing in the wind" by Bob Dylan and thought that protest songs like that should come out of the black community. (I have heard from other sources his actual words were "Since when do whiteboys make music like that?") So he rose to the artistic challenge presented by that song and more than met it with "A Change Is Gonna Come" I was born by the river In a little tent And just like the river I've been running ever since (-In reference to the Born-Again Church baptisms where they submerge you in a river. Sam Cooke was brought up in and first performed with these Churchs) It's been a long, long time coming But I know a change is gonna come Oh, yes it is (- this was the 60s, people did believe that big change was inevtiable, and soon) It's been too hard living But I'm afraid to die I don't know what's up there beyond the sky (-fairly self explanatory really) It's been a long, long time coming But I know a change is gonna come Oh yes it will I go to the movie And I go Downtown Somebody Keep telling me Dont hang around (- They left ths fairly ambigious, but the suggestion was that he would go downtown and either it refered to the way that the owners of restaurants and cinemas would tell him to 'move along' cos they didnt want any black faces on their establisment or that you would get all the young radical blacks saying "Dont hang around! Lol I realise now that I should say Mr Cooke as I'm not actually on first name terms with the man) It's been a long, long time coming But I know a change is gonna come Oh, yes it will Eerily, when Sam first played this song to friends and family they all said it reminded them of death. This meant that Sam only performed it live two or three times because it spooked him out. However, on the night it went to press on the B-side of his new single, he was murdered. |
