Travis – The Beautiful Occupation Lyrics 19 years ago
i got an account because i was amazed that noone had commented on the real meaning of this song: the u.s. war in Iraq. This obviously a satire on the manner bush went about invading Iraq. Because Bush had no legal reason for going into Iraq, the best he could do was use faulty information to try to scare the rest of America into believing it a worthwhile cause. If you kept close attention to the news during the first year of occupation, you'll notice that bush constantly changed his reason. originally (if you can remember) it was because of very vague reports of ryacin and possibly enriched uranium. It was only much later, when neither of these panned out, that Bush changed his focus to "WMD" (in the chemical sense, because evidence was found that Saddam had tested chemicals on kurds) and eventually "terrorism" (no connection to al qaeda). This song shows how frustrating it is that so many american's act like sheep and actually support this dispicable man, the main reason being because they don't pay attention to what's been happening. According to the exit polls of the 2004 election, 64% of postgraduate citizens voted for Kerry, in other words the smartest of the smart. This song, instead of seeming outwardly hostile, has lines like "the beautiful occupation, you don't need an invitation," making a joke of how little some american's care that we went to iraq and are losing troops without a good reason (invitation). The last line, "don't call the united nations," should give it away, because the U.S. was actually told by the UN security council NOT to go in, but we did anyway. I don't know how I could make this any clearer. Fantastic song by the way.
